MonsieurMonkey
Okay, so I've just got my degree, and I'm looking for work. There's nothing. And I've been looking since January, and I'm started to get rather depressed about the situation. I'm not just looking for a job though, I want something with progression that I can move up in. Basically I'm looking for some ideas of what else I can do, I search most of the normal sites, Reed, Totaljobs, Indeed, the DirectGov site, I'm also on Linked In and Google daily to see if I can find anything on there. I'm not looking for a field in particular I just want a job. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions it'd be cool, because being on the dole is the grimmest thing ever. I don't know how people do it for long periods of time or why anyone would want to commit benefit fraud, how they can sit around doing f**k all everyday is beyond me. Cheers gents.
CalRobbo341
I recently started volenteering for the RSPCA over in Wallasey, since I was only in college 1-2 days I was really considered it, but I could never be bothered to be honest. Havent ever had a long time real job, not old enough for the dole and I don't start college again 'till September, hence I started volenteering, along with me madre! Just something to keep me occupied, so I am not just watching films all day. I doubt this will help but you never know!

MonsieurMonkey
I have done a fair bit of volunteering Cal, and I do still volunteer when I'm needed at the school my mum works at, but cheers for the advice. I've never really looked at it Bucky, and I dunno what the score is with it really? Plus I'll quite happily admit I'm a bit of a pussy so I've got no idea how well I'd fair, and I'd realistically like to stay in Liverpool, but I think if my situation is the same in a few months I'll probably be moving towards the idea of it as it's most certainly a great career with great progression prospects. JDâ„¢
If you know what you wanna do, approach some local companies and offer to do some work experience for nowt. Worst case scenario is it gets you into a workplace and adds to your cv, best is that you earn yourself a role by being proactive. Either way it's good! I'm never going to employ anyone any other way...
Bucky
im biased towards the army, in particular Royal Engineers, but its up to you. also dont forget royal marines, everyone thinks army, navy and raf but forgets the puddle pirates are seperate

I'm never going to employ anyone any other way... I was thinking about doing that, considering moving into accountancy as I love working with numbers, either that or some kind of data analysis but that's a little harder to get into and there's no formal training so there's nothing I can work towards. Do you think that I'd be able to walk into an accountancy firm and they'd be up for letting me do a bit of work experience? Just with it being people's money etc. Cheers again Bucky, I think I'd want to go Army or RAF as I dunno how much I'd enjoy being at sea for long periods or anything which I'm sure is part of the deal if you join up. But I guess all sides of it have a deal of being away so it doesn't matter where you go, and I do kind of like the idea of being on a submarine, I guess i'll have to weigh it all up. Should have probably said this in the first post Tom, BSc in Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice, got a 2.1 as well so it does open up some graduate schemes to me as well. Is there no route in via the normal police? With specialist qualifications are there not potential avenues there? Or go into the army with sights set on being in the MP? I've read all the Jack Reacher books and it sounds pretty sweet !
isitafox
Railway, have a look on Network Rails website. They usually take on graduates on a specific course where you get to basically have a go at each area of the railway over a couple of years then at the end you basically take your pick of where you want to go. Can be anything from a station manager to signalling manager, work in control which oversees the entire network or there's operational planning, etc...... I could go on and on. Loads of potential to move not only up in the company but if you find your not keen on the area you work in you can easily switch to another. MonsieurMonkey
The police are cutting around 12,000 jobs at the moment so it's not great, although I am looking for data analyst jobs within the police a lot. And most "beat" jobs now require you to be a special constable for 2 years, then to become a detective you've got to do a year or two on the beat as well, and I couldn't do that in Liverpool... I've never even though about the MP so I'll definitely have a look into that, great idea, although I'm not sure how they're viewed within the army. Ahhh awesome Mr Fox, another great idea, I'll definitely take a look into that. Congratulations on the mod position as well whenever that happened lol. Simpson
Feel your pain brother! I'm just about to sign on, been putting it off for 3 weeks but after 70+ applications im getting pissed off and my enthusiasm gets lower everyday. The only thing I could suggest (which I will start doing if I'm in this situation next week) is send in paper applications, sure they must get more noticed that online ones? Dunno. I'm f**ked anyway haha just doing 2 applications a day for jobs I don't really want.

Congratulations on the mod position as well whenever that happened lol. They literally snap your hand off if you have a degree. When I was at signalling school training a few years ago there was a girl on our course who had moved from the pay dept, when it came to light she had a degree the bosses wanted to get her off the signalling course and fast track her into the graduate management course. Took her a good few months to get them to stop asking!
Luke Rainbird
Flick through a few sites, get an idea of what's about, list in order of awesome and go from there. Make sure you're tailoring your CV and any covering/additional information to each position though. I've been pretty lucky in that I've managed to walk into the first grad job I applied for before even getting my results. Steez. But yeah, I'm pretty sure it was down to making sure my CV was dialled and doing some decent prep for my interview/presentation (and by "prep" I mean getting rather drunk the night before to try and forget the fact I had to miss the Hilltop gig to go...) If it comes to it, you may have to sign yourself up to the fact that you may have to find some other work to keep you ticking over until a proper career comes knocking I guess, but that's still far from the end of the world

I'm f**ked anyway haha just doing 2 applications a day for jobs I don't really want. I suspect (not totally sure) that most of those applications go straight to job agencies? Ideally you want to get your applications to the employers yourself. When I applied for my job I posted my CV instead of emailing it - the boss asked why I did that during the interview and I told them I wanted to make sure it was read by the right person. Do stuff like following up your application - if you haven't heard back for a week give them a call and ask if they recieved it. If you have an interview and you don't hear back, give them a call and ask if a decision has been made, and if you didn't get it ask how you could have interviewed better. Before an interview, research the company, research the job. If you don't know the answer to something, say you don't know and that you will find out. All of these little things add up and show you are proactive, so even if you're not ideally suited, at least you're willing to work with them. The people who put the extra effort in are the ones who are getting the jobs. Sorry, got a bit OT there.. edit, just spotted this. this is the problem just doing 2 applications a day for jobs I don't really want. weirdoku
Jobs eh? Since I graduated last august, f**k me it's almost been a year, I couldn't find a job related to my course (3D Design). I've tried calling, emailing, mailing, waking in with my CV in countless places, following up my applications and the only two jobs that I managed to get is Halfords and now in the megastore for a football club. To be honest, I am very close to giving up all hope in finding a job related to my course. I'm just thinking about getting a job that pays more than minimum and work at it till I retire! I've signed on to JSA twice since last August, I just need money more than anything else. I've got student overdrafts to worry about soon and the parents want £300 rent (they ain't getting £300!), plus my own phone bills and money for petrol and food for work and other little things, all while trying to save up money to move out as well. isitafox
You should just work as a car detailer dan, it's summat you enjoy and are passionate about plus there's always gonna be a call for it. Get some decent clients on the go now and do a bit part time then when you finish you've got a business ready and waiting for you if you wanted it.
