Luke Dunstan
Alright guys? Really fancy a pair of barefoot style running shoes, and have got my eye on the Nike Free range. Has anyone used these before, and if so how did you find them?
Rusevelt
There was a documentary about sports supplements and sportswear on BBC1 last night and one of the topics was about the next gen in running shoes. Should be available to watch on BBC i-player.

JD™
Complete gimmick in my eyes. If you want to run with a 'barefoot style', then either run barefoot or just concentrate on running on the forefoot in normal trainers. All you're paying for here is ultimately less protection, while allowing your body to to think your feet are as protected as they would be with a normal running shoe. The only one I'd consider is the properly odd looking one that I've forgotten the name of, with individual toes in it and it's basically just a thin layer of protection from scrapes - essentially actually running barefoot without the cuts. JD™
Them's the ones, cheers! EDIT: I should add that I've spent quite a lot of time running 'barefoot' (in this case in socks) on grass and tracks to try to train myself to be an efficient runner - I'd say that will work better than these products. Why buy something that tries to imitate something that can be achieved so easily by taking your shoes off? I see where you're coming from, there are the Free Run + 3s that have a bit more protection, and are still mega light. Just want something super light and breathable for the gym! At the moment I'm running in a pair of Saucony XC shoes and they roast my feet after about 10 minutes! JD™
Then run outside I'll shut up now, i get all weird and preachy about running very quickly...
Luke Dunstan
I welcome the preachings. I normally do run outside, which is why I bought the Saucony shoes. What would you recommend as general gym/running shoe?
JD™
I usually just use a retired set of running trainers in the gym - after 500 miles they're good for nothing and usually got a few holes in so they're airy enough for the gym. I suppose I think about it differently though because I'm lucky enough to be able to shut the gym for my use so no-one see's me looking like a tramp! If I was going to recommend for buying new, I'd probably just say to go and buy whatever is the airiest and most comfortable in whatever shop you have access to. Don't worry too much about weight for gym work - at the end of the day you think of the extra weight as resistance to use as part of the workout! Good shout on Sauconys by the way, I swear by them for any serious running.
Joe Aston
i have 2 pairs of these one set of V.5 and an early model i think v.3 i also have some top spec asics normal running shoes and to be completely truthful with you i prefer the asics for running anything more than 5 miles in. they are very light but unless you have the correct running style this shoes i believe are going to do you more harm then good. i was in the same boat as you and thought oh they look cool and i think barefoot running would be for me, but i found that they gave me calf strain which is something i have never suffered in a normal pair of running shoes. now i cannot comment on a pair of normal nike running shoes as i had a pair but only wore them once as they where the wrong size. (if you are wondering why i have some many pairs of nike running shoes i have a friend who works there so i pay next to nothing for them) i would not buy them without being put on a running machine in a specialists sports shop and being advise that they would be suitable for you. Hope this clears things up for you.

More thought is needed! Thanks again.
Joe Aston
Yeah that is very true. At the moment im using mine for shorter runs 5-6 miles and then my trusty old asics for anything longer. Im hoping for a pair of fly knits in the not too distance future. Now if you want light thats what you should go for. although i have no idea on how much they are going to cost. Luke Dunstan
Went for a pair of these in the end, As I have to try running shoes on first it ended up with a 100 mile round trip near Slough. Got to say, they are 100 times better than wearing Trail runners at the gym. they feel AMAZING! Thanks for all the help again, the Knits look incredible!
