i use caustic potash, works a treat just done my stem yesterday. easy to use just mix it with water depending how strong you want it, it should mention a ratio on the container, use plyers to fish your stuff out and drop into a tub of water to dilute the solution and brush off with a stiff brush (caustic potash is alkali so vinager is a good way to netruaise your home made stripper, having a jug full mixed with water handy is a must chemical burns arnt fun) dont be tempted to inhale any gasses given off either that will make you feel pretty ill

i dont know :/ never mind

dan... wanted a ruff estemate because if it takes 5 seconds to put a hole in you i don't want to do it! look at the poor chicken leg... like 3 mins and it was down to bone... this shits serious! haa

trials hoe: if youre not talking out of your arse sorry, were abouts did you do your stem? in the bath or something? ( may sound silly but i don't know ) i want to do my stem so it may help a lot...

cheers

in an empty ice cream tub lol mix up as little as possible just enough to submerge it will do, no point making loads if you dont need it youd be asking for troubble. i did my trialtech stem logos stayed on but the black was a bit more stubborn and had to be brushed off, if your worried about corrosive solutions you could always use a wire brush tool, itll take a lifetime and the finnish wont be uniform but its a bit safer

Caustic soda isn't that bad have used it loads of times never worn goggles or gloves any one with bit of savvy can do it don't know was all the fuss is about My advice is put the pot that you are doing it into the bath that way it can't go anywhere and you have water at hand if anything does go wrong

I stripped my Echo urbans in caustic soda. It really isnt as violent as people make out. It smells a bit and the metal may come out kind of smoking!! I didnt use gloves or goggles and was in shorts and a t shirt. I pulled the forks out with my bare hands and got no kind if 'burns'

I mixed it with warm water in a big plastic container and dipped them for a series of 5 second dips. When you are happy that all the annodising is off give it a wipe over with clean soapy water.

Hope this helps

If your concerned about burning your hands do what I do.

Fill the sink with cold water and a washing up bowl next to it with boiling

Pour caustic soda into the boiling water (I didn't measure it I just poured in what I thought was about right)

Get whatever your planning on stripping and run a length of brake cable through it

Hold the cable at either end and dip said item into the caustic solution and swish it about

It'll fizz about in the water if you've used enough caustic then after 5 secs or so pull it out and give it a swish in the cold water in the sink to see how much has come off (you may have to give it a wipe with a cloth/brush/scourer to remove the black coating the caustic will leave)

Keep repeating till you reach the finish you desire, this obviously only works for smaller items, forks and frames will require a paintbrush and protection like young dan suggested as this stuff burns. If it doesn't then your not using enough!

I just did this last week, mixed around 200g to about 3 litres of water, think that was quite strong and you can feel exothermic reaction through the gloves,

I would suggest gloves and long sleeve, goggles are excessive I wear glasses but better safe than sorry IMO.

Make sure if you do it in your bathroom there's plenty of ventilation, I had to put a fan on with windows open as the fumes didn't look like it was great for my lungs. Keep some running water going just so you can rinse or wash any body parts getting splashed.

Do seconds at a time, then rinse, I think I over did it a little and it turned my cranks a little black, but I polished it out but if you're not planning to polish then be careful on how long you leave it in there. I had to do mine with a light brush as my freewheel was stuck on cranks and I didn't fancy soaking that in the water, but otherwise you should be able to soak the whole thing in!
