Need some help, my laptop is knackered! The cable connecting the internal hard drive is faulty meaning my laptop only boots up 1 out of 25 or so attempts. Is it possible to put the hard drive in an external case, connect it via usb and boot up that way?

I only want it running long enough to transfer all my music (about 6500 files) from iTunes to Google Play Music as I can copy the rest of the pics/vids using it as an external drive when I get a replacement.

Providing it's a relatively new laptop then yeah you shouldn't have a problem at all. It'll load everything slowly though.

Just installed arma3 (having thought for a year that my machine wouldn't run it well enough so didn't bother) and it runs really smooth despite having a 3-4 generation old gpu, I acquired the version I have to test for performance but I will be buying it shortly :)

Very impressed with it, seems super slick and polished (compared to arma2), now to find time to invest in it.

For reference im running: -

i3 @ 4.2ghz

8Gb DDR3

GTX260 core216

1TB hybrid SSD

win7 pro 64

Freetrack running with 3point ir and ps3eye

Thrustmaster warthog hotas and rcs rudders for flying duties

1920x1080, most settings on standard, high textures, low hdr, 1800 view distance and seems to pull a fairly steady 25-30 fps without much hassle :)

Looking at getting my girlfriend a computer for xmas as she only has an ipad atm and wants something to have in her room as a dedicated workstation.
She'll only mainly be using it for music, office, internet etc no hardcore games or anything.
We were looking at all in one computers and this one seems to come up quite a lot. http://www.ebuyer.com/644440-lenovo-c365-aio-desktop-57327892
All in one simply because they're quite neat to have it just in the screen and I won't have to buy a separate monitor etc.
Must have windows already installed :)
Does anyone have any other options? Doesn't have to be an all in one PC but as one package would be perfect.
Wanting to spend up to around £400!! Thanks for any replies!!

I am a crazy person.

There's a price premium on those things because they're a gimmick. Also, that thing appears to have the CPU from a novelty doorbell, which is not enough to run Windows 8. IMO get a decent laptop (£600-700 is the pricepoint where the best value can be had), or build her a desktop, which is by far the best value route.

My proper recommendation though is not to spend £400 on a Christmas present for someone, because that's is mental.

EDIT: To put into perspective just how slow that CPU is, here it is compared to a CPU that you see regularly in ~£400 laptops: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2005&cmp[]=2259

Better deal definitely, but personally I'd not touch anything from AMD at the moment. I used to be a proper AMD fanboy but every desktop CPU I've seen from them for the past 3 years or so has been wank haha.

Building a desktop and installing windows can be done in a couple of hours and you will get a far better spec for the money. A £600 computer to buy will cost you about £300 to build, promise!

I understand they are cheaper mate, built my own ages ago for the computer downstairs but that's when I had time and knew about parts and what works with what etc.

Now I'm literally wanting to just buy one to save messing around.

I'm wondering about whether a laptop would be better now. Anything decent for £300 ish? The thing is it's only for general purpose stuff not for like if I was to be wanting one like for gaming and solidworks

Hold the phone she plays the sims, so could do with being bake to play games.

If anyone has made a decent £300 laptop (for running Windows) then I don't know about it.

If she wants games, she needs some power. You're bot going to get it on a £400 budget without building it, and it will take you an couple of hours to research and order the parts, and another couple to bolt them together, and save you around 40-50% of the price. Stop being a silly sausage Dan!
