alanczik
hello all i have front and rear hope pro 2 in gold. and i want it black.. and i have access to a sand blast machine 1- should i sandblast it.. and then spray it primer gray, then black from spray cans? 2- is it too dangerous for the small parts and ball bearing inside the hub? 3- should i spray it straight on the anodized hub with no filing? (the moving stuff will be protected with mask tape.) hope for comments alan Edited July 14, 2012 by alanczik
Leeeeee
Just give it a light sanding to remove the shine then primer grey it and spray black it should be fine in normal weather.

SamKidney
Fine emery cloth will do the job. You dont need to go to bare metal. Just lightly roughening up the surface to give a better surface for the primer to adhere to.
BradJohnson
Just be careful when cleaning your bike, the paint will rub straight off
monkeyseemonkeydo
Just be careful when cleaning your bike, the paint will rub straight off Rubbish! you'll need to be careful when building the wheel back up as it may scratch fairly easily but beyond that it'll, be fine. As has been said just key the surface first.
bike_dummie
One more thing is that if your going to spray the hub you may want too strip the hub down to the body, very simple and easy to do. If you are unsure on how to strip it down hope have a video on how to do it, I'd upload a link if I could but I am on my phone so a quick google of hope tech pro2 strip down in videos should give you the answer
RobinJI
Yeah, the best bet will be to sand it with fine paper just to key it. (Something like 800 grit, and sanded just enough to take the shine off.) Sand blasting would be un-necessary and overkill. Then a light coat of acid etch primer before going on with the black. Etch primer is always a good plan with aluminium parts, it's pricey, but you only need a really thin coat of it, so a can lasts a long time usually. If you strip it down, you'll still need to mask off the bearings mounting surfaces completely, as well as any areas where the thickness of the paint may cause things to bind. Like the face of the the spacers that go between the bearing and the dropout (can't remember their proper name) that sits against the bearing. Basically just every surface you wont be able to see to be on the safe side. Edited July 14, 2012 by RobinJI
