JT!
I copied my entire 'my documents' folder over to my external hard drive for backup and then when I next look, all but 3 (my computer, my documents and the recycle bin) are left. There's a folder in my documents with all my original desktop items in there but I can drag them to my desktop. When I restart, a message comes up telling me it can't find my desktop because [path linked to my external HHD) can't be found. WTF?

JT!
I aren't having an issue with the external HDD, but my desktop items not showing. I think I've somehow set my desktop to find shit from another directory (a directory on my external HDD) possibly?

If you go into your Documents, Under where it says 'Documents Library', it should say Includes X Locations. Click on this, and you can control which directories are in your documents. JT!
There's 2 locations, 1 is public documents, the other is the folder that appeared in my documents with all my desktop stuff in there. Still not showing up on the desktop.

Muel
You didn't copy your documents, you moved them.to copy go into C:/documents and settings rather than through the libraries.
TrialsIsHard
I did this a few weeks ago, and it was a b*tch.. I should have made a topic rather than tackling it on my own!
JT!
I think I know what I did, I'll report in if it is what I think it is I think I've done. Edited July 6, 2012 by JT!
TrialsIsHard
Surely if I moved my documents they wouldn't be there anymore? Yeah, and your computer is looking for them in the location in which they were before.. but they aren't there? Check all your destinations are on your C: drive, other than that I have no idea.. Yeah, and your computer was looking for them in the location in which they were before.. but they aren't there?
JT!
OK so I did move the files instead of copying them. But only the new files moved. Copying the files on the external HDD back should sort everything out. Edited July 6, 2012 by JT!
