Laurence--Trials
I sometimes use monty brake spray on my rear maggy and as i spray it it'll sometimes get a bit on the top of the rim (as appose to the sidewalls) and over time it hardens into this hard, white, oily, semi sticky substance on my rim. To which many people at radfest asked if i had jizzed on my rim. I want to know is there any easy way to get it off? I've tried sand paper and files both work but i don't want to damage my rim. I then moved onto white spirit, which didn't do anything and finally i've tried boiling water which melts the substance into a very thick colourless shiney paste which is also hard to remove. Any ideas/tips/knowhow?
harmertrials
petrol? aftershave? vodka? I'd of thought anything with a high alcohol content. If they don't work then i guess caustic soda, and try not to strip the paint
N.Wood
Meths and the rough side of a dish sponge? Grinder?
RobinJI
I'd have thought TFR and a scouring pad would remove it, (traffic film remover). No experience of trying it though. WD40 would likely thin it down if you don't mind cleaning/degreasing the crap out of the rim after. If it's really really tough to remove, then there's a drill attachment called a 'toffee wheel' that are used to remove sticky residue from car paint (after removing graphics/vinyl/stickers/badges etc.), they work bloody well, and don't damage paint as long as you're careful not to let it get hot and burn the surface. Laurence--Trials
Meths and the rough side of a dish sponge? Grinder? Grinder!? Its hard, but not that hard haha, and its on the top of the rim as appose to the sidewall so cant grind it I'd have thought TFR and a scouring pad would remove it, (traffic film remover). No experience of trying it though. WD40 would likely thin it down if you don't mind cleaning/degreasing the crap out of the rim after. Thats why i used the white sprit to thin it down, didn't do alot though. I'll ask my dad if we've got a toffee wheel sounds like a pretty good option to me! brake cleaner? I'll try this too, doesn't sound like a bad idea. Laurence--Trials
I think Nick was implying you should probably grind your rim instead Oh i've already got a grind, if the grind gets a little dusty or something and the brake starts slacking i'll sometimes put brakespray on although most of the residue is from before i had a grind. Nah, dont want to risk getting WD40 on the brakes, they're spot on at the moment.
Jake.
If its just the fact theres a bit of white on your rim that's bothering you, but doesn't affect anything performance-wise I wouldn't bother. Any pics of it? I never noticed it at radfest lol

Sam T
I noticed that at Radfest. I just thought that you started stripping the paint off the rim, got bored and left it haha
Carlperkins
just use WD40.. all you have to do is whip your wheel out, use a rag with WD40 on it. then when your done clean it with suds and then re-grind your rim before putting it back on. how would using WD40 affect your brake? aside from leaving your wheel in and going mental spraying WD all over it. guarantee WD40 works.. dann2707
Kitchen degreaser. And it won't contaminate your wheel.
