CalRobbo341
So I thought I would save myself a few bob and take my freewheel off instead of sending to Tarts with it on and then them changing it. Anyway, I got it all setup using an old rear hub axle, then the crank, then the freewheel tool, then a spacer and a bolt, got the vice and put it in (giggity) got a pole off of the trampoline and then kapow! SNAP! Poor vice, I put hardly any pressure on it and it went... So yeah anyway just thought I would share! Also when sending it to Tarty, should I send the freewheel I want on the cranks, bashring and the current cranks? I also have a gold ring of a spare driveside crank, should I send that along? Cheers
harmertrials
That's the 4th vice I've heard of snapping in the past month or so (mine included). Just send the crank along with freewheel. You only need to wing your new one on hand tight.
RobinJI
A friend did exactly the same thing to the vice at Halfords when we worked there, doing exactly the same job in the same way. It's a huge amount of force to put on the vice, and cheap/poor ones will destroy themselves from it. Edit, if you want to prevent doing it in the future you need to extend the flats on the freewheel tool somehow, so the leverage on the vice is decreased. My first thought would be to weld some thick plate to the tool, the same width as the flats on it, so it's clamped all the way down the vice's jaws, not just in the middle. I know how to put one on, but to save me fu*king it up some how so would rather just pay an extra £2 for them to fit it :L A friend did exactly the same thing to the vice at Halfords when we worked there, doing exactly the same job in the same way. It was obviously weak, been there since my Mum bought the house, apparently, back in the early 80's!
AdamR28
If you're sending one back for us to remove, don't worry about any fitting charge, just pop a note in and we'll do it Think we've only snapped one vice so far, but it was a £14 Tesco one or something

RobinJI
Haha, yes, yes it would! That vice still hasn't been replaced. At least you stopped Ben worrying about chipping the corner off it earlier on.
