When Everything Goes Tits Up....

There's no angry thread and since Tom once said feel free to start a new thread, that's what I'll do. Don't blame anyone for not wanting to read this. All my mates are at work now, going to go to the pub in the evening but needed to get it off my chest now.

Today was one of those days you wish never started. So far I'm down one laptop, a bit of pride and perhaps a few unhappy customers who I hope will get their shipments in by the end of this week. And all it took was just one hour filled with unquantifiable levels of frustration. It all started at night during an epic storm. My room was lit like a disco and there was so much noise I couldn't sleep. After I think 2 hours, when it started getting brighter outside and the storm was over, I fell asleep only to be woken up very soon by annoying beeps - there's a power cut and the ups is signalling emergency backup power. I try to sleep despite the beeps but fail, some time later I find it in me to get out of bed and switch the bloody thing off. Yay. Off to bed, almost manage to fall asleep and then the alarm clock in my mobile goes off. It's 7am. Ok then, down to work. Need to pack a few international orders and get UPS to come over and pick them up. Still no power. No matter, by the time I get everything packed and measured, it should be back on. 3 hours later, 1 hour before the latest I can schedule a pickup the same day, I decide to do a rather difficult task - order a pick up online and print the airway bills without any electricity but with a house full of these emergency power supplies which as it later turned out out were all about to die. I'm no Captain Hindsight but I should never have tried to persevere.

Firstly I try using my android phone, get online using an Edge connection and find I've forgotten the password to my UPS account. No matter, I'll just re-set it. Hold on, this function doesn't seem to work. The internet is also biblically slow, so with 40 minutes left, I decide to connect a router to the ups and use land line internet. Hooray, it works. I get out my laptop, after about 10 minutes manage to guess the password to the shipping account. I'm in. Half way into booking of the first shipment, I get a "check your internet connection" screen only to find that the power supply got flat and the router died. There's a lot of these emergency power supplies in my dad's room, will just connect the router to another one. But hold on - the router is fixed permanently to the wall. So I run down to my room, get another router, power supply and connect it to a not yet flat ups. Now to just find a land line socket... damn. Need a longer cable. Ok got it, router connected to a socket at the other end of the room but it turns out my router is configured for my business line and doesn't work. So I unscrew my dad's router, connect it - works! Now, back to the laptop, there's still time to get at least a few orders into the system... hold on, why is the screen black? Is it asleep? Nope. Reset. Hard reset. Ok, it must work when I reinsert the battery. Done, powering on. Getting frustrated, on the ground - 10 push ups, 20, 30, 40. Back to laptop, should work now? Nope, still black screen. Getting REALLY frustrated... Laptop punch. Ooooops. Surely it hasn't bent? Wait a moment, the hard disk fell out the bottom. Hold on, the hard disk is bent... No matter, there's still time!

Quick, my mum's laptop. Got it. Printer plugged into the power supply, all working. My plan is to upload the airway bills onto a pendrive and then print them directly from that. Ok, laptop is on - wait what? Internet password? What the hell is it? Ah yes, it's on my PC in a txt file. Just need to go down, switch the PC on, look it up. Windows loading screen appears, then there's a long beep and everything goes black. No power left in my emergency power supply. More frustration, where's my bloody laptop. Laptop throw, punch, vigorous screen removal. Ahhh that's better. Oh and the laptop is still on. Would be a shame to wear the battery down. Off switch still works. I still find some last hope in my own router which is not password protected but it all goes tits up when I accidentally pull the landline socket out the wall with all the cables snapping somewhere in between. By then I was out of time and the only chance to get back online was to solder the cables back on but there was no electiricy for the soldering ion... Now I have power and internet in my office but I have no idea how to fix these cables in my dad's room. It's not as obvious as one might think despite there only being two that have come off...

I'm inclined to send the laptop on warranty and tell them to ignore it's present condition and just fix the screen. However they might deny repairs because I replaced the RAM and hard disk shortly after purchasing this cheap pile of crap and surely that invalidates the warranty?

And I'm sorry if one of you is waiting for your order which will now be delayed 24 hours but just so you know - I tried. Really.

Yea sounds like a pretty bad day but at least you didn't lose your anal virginity.

I think that's a given.

But yeah, a pretty shit day, but certainly not the worst you could have, not by a long shot. The only thing lost is a laptop - no big deal. Just look forward to tomorrow. At least the power will be on :P
