dann2707
Hey. I'm after a new phone contract as mine all gone. Erm, i'm looking at the HTC one S on this. http://www.phones4u.co.uk/shop/shop_contract_details.asp?ItemKey=592518 I'm tempted by the 2nd deal down as it's only £15.50 a month with a free phone (24 month contract), I barely ring people only text and go on the internet. However you only get 250mb. The 4th one down looks good as it's £20.50 per month but you get £100 back anyway on this redemption thingy, sounds a bit weird, has anyone done the redemption thing before? And that works out at like £16 per month but have to do this return form thing. But with that you get 500mb of internet which i ideal. How much is 500mb though? If i come on here a few times a day on my phone, facebook etc. Considering I will be using wifi at any available chance. Just not sure how quickly i'd go through 250 or 500mb. Cheers !! Andeee
When I use to work at currys years ago. I remember for mobile broadband 2gb was on average 1-2 hours per day. As that was the starting allowance available at the time. But it might of all changed since then. Hope this helps
Pete.M
I get 500Mb a month, no problem if you mostly use wifi or just do basic browsing, but if you watch too many youtube vids or use google maps a lot then it could easily run out. This doesn't help with your question, but I personally think sim only contracts are best.
dann2707
Cheers! And same here I wouldn't normally go for a contract, was going to go with GiffGaff as it's £10 for unlimitied texts and internet and 250 mins BUT that's not with a phone. And with it being spread out over time it's much easier for me rather than buying the phone out right for £400 or whatever it is. My phones on the blink so kinda makes sense too i suppose. Jake.
Find a cheap 2nd hand phone you like, (got my iphone 4 from sister, cracked, for £150). Get a SIM contract, I get 300 minutes calls a month, unlimited texts but no internet for £10 a month on o2.I don't feel the need to use the internet while out and about, theres wifi spots all over the place. Can't people get a break from the internet these days? But I'd understand if you travelled a lot and didn't have access to wifi.

Do this but have a look at GiffGaff. £10 a month 'GoodyBag' (not a contract so not locked into anything) gives 250 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet. Can't fault them. Tomm
What's the point in having an iPhone without internet? That's just silly. I'm capped to 500Mb/month, and looking at my usage, I've used about 4 Gb in a year. Which would suggest that 250Mb might not be enough (for me). I don't really watch a lot of videos whilst out and about, no streaming music etc. Just going on the internet really. And obviously I have WiFi at home which doesn't affect the allowance.I'll probably get a GiffGaff sim when my contract expires next month. isitafox
I burn through 750mb a month with ease but that's with coming on here a lot, using facebook, emails and games like words with friends. If I were you I'd go through something like quidco or topcashback, quidco are offering £50 cashback on contracts from phones4U so that'd take it down a bit. The redemption things can be good but are a bit of a pain as you have to save all your bills to a certain month then post them back with a voucher, or you did when I did it years ago. http://www.quidco.com/mobiles/pay-monthly/
dann2707
Cheers Dave ordered it through quidco. Although how do i reclaim? I've heard of quidco before, so understand how it works but not sure how to redeem sort of thing. I clicked on the blue link on the left where it appears to go through quidco then to phones4u website, I didn't need to enter any code did I? As there wasn't any box to do so i dont think. isitafox
I take it you registered on quidco first?? When you register you should be able to edit your details and input where you want your cashback paying, it usually takes a few months but it definately does work. I've done it with quite a few different things. Edited June 16, 2012 by isitafox

isitafox
Nah, will take a couple of days/weeks for it to show on quidco

Danny
Looking at the usage on my iphone i've used on average 220mb per month (1.7gb over 8 months). Thats with all my home/work usage being on wifi.
arw_86
tesco 12month contract sim only. £10 500mins, 5000 texts, 500mb internet. uses 02 network. been sweet for me although ive got through 2 phones now so prob not saving much over a contrat, if anything. But it is easily done if you can afford a sim outright. im aware its going away from your original topic, apologies. If its any help my mate has the one x and its stupidly quick and lovely to use
Dwarf Shortage
I'm on GiffGaff's £10 goodybag with unlimited texts and internet and 250 minutes, have been for the past year or so, regret not moving sooner, excellent network.
Tomm
Bit of a random question - with O2 I can use my iPhone as a personal internet hotspot - it just lets you do it whereas on other networks you're expected to pay for it. Anyone know what the deal with giffgaff is?
TrialsIsHard
Giffgaff have a complete ban on any tethering unless you buy a 'gigabag' which is no where near as good a deal.. I'm moving to giffgaff in a week or so when my contract ends, and intend on using my phone as a WiFi hotspot

I'm moving to giffgaff in a week or so when my contract ends, and intend on using my phone as a WiFi hotspot I don't get how they know if you're using the phone (occasionally) as a WiFi hotspot... do it occasionally with GiffGaff on my HTC Wildfire and haven't had any comeback from them yet. Is it just extreme usage that would flag it up or do they actually interrogate the data flow to see if people are connecting to Microsoft Update or whatnot on their Android phone/iPhone? manuel
I have also often wondered this.... Ive been on giffgaff since my o2 contract ran out. its brilliant, and I keep my unlimited data... over 30gb downloaded in under 2 years makes me somewhat of a power user. TrialsIsHard
Word on the interweb is that: 'I think I worked out a method, due what I have learned from my Cisco CCNA course. Quite simply when a data packet is passed through a router the time to live is decreased by 1. When you tether your phone is acting as a router. So they check the time to live number. Time to live (TTL) is simply a method used to prevent data packets looping around in a network doing nothing when they get lost, once the time to live number reaches zero they are discarded.' That means nothing to me reaaaaally, but I assume that so many people do it it would take them ages to trawl through them all. I think they'd only pick you up if you used a serious amount of data! Tomm
I did a bit of a search of the giffgaff forums - sounds like a few people have been busted for tethering. I doubt they would be able to tell for simple HTML data, but if your iPhone was downloading eg flash data that would be suspicious to anyone looking closely. I doubt it would get flagged up unless you used load of data. Are you certain your not charged extra? I'm on 3 which is 100% unlimited tethering. Use my phone for Xbox (FPS gaming) and downloading. Hmmm. Might get a 3 sim then. O2 is definitely free tethering (on my contract at least), although it's only up to the 500mb/month limit. It's fine because I only do the tethering very occasionally, but it's a great feature to have. Does your phone allow Xbox gaming? That's insane. I took the xbox to my girlfriends halls and it wouldn't connect to live through her halls network. Got the SGS2 set to hotspot, connected via laptoip wireless and connection shared to 360. It was fine for playing zombies on black ops (her favourite game) and aside from one or two 10 second periods of slowdown it was awesome. Racked up about an hour and a half of live play with it. My usage for this month has just gone over 2gb, last month it was just under. I'm on 3 with the £3 a month for unltd internet deal. 900 mins, 5000txts and ultd internet for £23 a month with the phone costing £20 upfront.
