Luke Dunstan
Does anybody know much about 4G in the UK? I currently tether my PC and Xbox to my IPhones personal hotspot, which is fine for online gaming and downloading TV series etc. How much of an improvement would it make changing to a 4G phone instead of 3G? Is there much 4G coverage in the UK? Any input would as always be much appreciated.
ezgonzo
as far as i'm aware there is currently no 4g in the uk @ the moment, not too sure when it will be utilized but hopefully it won't be too far off.
AndrewEH1
They are currently testing 4G in London and other areas of the UK. There should not be a big difference in the connect speeds of the iPhone 3G versus the iPhone 4 - the number 4 does represent the network it connects to. In-fact the new iPad which was advertised as being able to connect to 4G networks is a slight lie, it only connects to some types of 4G networks and not the one the UK and other European countries will have. craigjames
4G might not be available, but getting a phone with hsdpa would certainly help.

Well I have the 4S currently, do you think 4G may become more available in the near future?
isitafox
I think it'll be a year or two yet. I've been following it in the news and there's a lot of problems about which providers get access to what whilst keeping it fair. Have a read yourself here http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17876161
craigjames
As said above i can't see 4G becoming available for a year or two yet as they're having issues with the bandwidth auction etc. If you have a 4S, which has the up rated (from 7.2 MBPS) 14.4 MBPS maximum data download speed then i think that's as good as you're going to get for the internet for a while. Edit: looks like it's going to be around E.O. 2015 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-18355569 Edited June 7, 2012 by craigjames
Luke Dunstan
Right then, to decide between the HTC One X or the Samsung Galaxy S3, what do I look out for to see which would have the better personal hotspot? Says HSPDA has 21Mbps speeds?
Jake.
Watched an episode of the gadget show ages ago, they were playing games like mw3 multiplayer from a park in London with no lag. They said it wouldn't be released until 2013 at the very least.

I get a bit of lag every couple of hours. Other than that it's flawless.

Wait until the whole country is on 4G, it will be faster but not Korean fast. Edited June 7, 2012 by AndrewEH1

Luke Dunstan
Through my iphone, I use it as a personal hotspot which sends a wifi signal out. I connect the Xbox to that signal and play Xbox live.
tomturd
Looks like vodaphone and o2 are joining up, with them sorting out 4G by 2015, seems like quite a way off http://www.mobilenewscwp.co.uk/2012/06/o2-and-vodafone-announce-network-sharing-plans/
