Miss-Higgy
They both host videos one charges you and one doesn't. That's all i know...? What is the big difference?
Revolver
Vimeo has a free service... Their videos seem better quality and there is less fuss about copyrighted music.
CalopS
Since Vimeo was updated I've found it less simple to use and worse to look at but overall its still a lot better than youtube for copyright, adverts and trolling.
Miss-Higgy
Well their free account is a bit poo lol you upload something then have to wait 40mins for them to mess about with it... They better not unsync it!!
Milford Cubicle
I upload all my stuff to Vimeo, much better in my opinion, the upload wait is a bit annoying and there's a limit for how much you upload per week which is smaller than Youtube I think. The only other thing that is better is the fact it links you to similar videos from other users on videos. Other than those things I much prefer Vimeo, old layout was better but what can you do. Vimeo generally seems to have a higher quality of videos on there... x
CalopS
Just the same as with youtube I think?
Mark W
If you give a f**k about making decent videos, Vimeo. If you just want to get a bunch of hits and a corresponding amount of shit comments, Youtube.
Miss-Higgy
Good job I've gone with vimeo don't know if my video is good though
TROYston
Vimeo always 100%. Youtube anoys me because the settings, it doesnt keep video size setting, it doesnt keep the highest quality setting, 1080p Still is poor qualtity, no original size option anymore, ads (adblocker works though), banner ads on the video after 10 seconds are always there no matter what until you cross them, the search system is terrible i find my self using google to find videos now. I could go on......
bikeperson45
I much prefer Youtube, my laptop can't handle Vimeo any more (unless it's an embedded video in which case it's fine?) and is just comes out all laggy where as any other video website I use is fine. Problem's probably my laptop, but still And for me when I've uploaded video they seem to be better quality on Youtube. Like the video in my signature is pretty terrible quality, but when it was on youtube it was better. Then again, I had to upload it to Vimeo if I wanted the song, and to edit a video specifically to a song to find out you can't use the song really sucks. And I much prefer the Youtube layout now. Go Youtube. And also with Vimeo there seems to be some pretentiousness, the users seem to think 'this is a proper video website rather than scummy old Youtube where all the chavs upload their videos'. That's an exaggeration but comes across that way to me. Edited May 31, 2012 by bikeperson45

Andeee
I could agree about people mentioning about the copyright laws on youtube etc. Vimeo is not as popular as youtube on how i see it but if the word gets spread it could increase. MadManMike
Vimeo is where most of the serious well made videos go. YouTube is where people upload mobile clips and fails etc... It's not pretentious, it's just that one site is aimed more at professional film makers, the other is aimed at general video clips.
eskimo
Vimeo also has a download option. But the new layout sucks donkeys.
Greetings
Used to use both, now only use youtube. Can't see a single benefit from using Vimeo but quite a lot of drawbacks.
bikeperson45
That's not pretentiousness.....that is what it is. It's just I've talked to people who say things along the lines of what I said, so I now associate people who upload to Vimeo to those people, even though I've uploaded there
isitafox
I use both, upload to both at once and post a youtube link then when the Vimeo one goes live stick that up instead. I love the download option though the one thing I really don't like with Vimeo is 90% of the vids won't play in a mobile browser which is where I do most of my web browsing.

Miss-Higgy
Well I've been struggling to embed stuff, and the time you have to wait when you don't have a premium account with vimeo is annoying. But on the whole once you get used to the lay out i quite like vimeo, especially the fact that there is no real adverts spamming your browsing...
isitafox
It's easy to embed, you just copy the address for the video at the top of the browser and paste it into a reply then remove the s. Don't try using that embed code as thats for web pages
Topsy
I use both too. I never browse vimeo without a reason, unlike youtube, but I find vimeo sympathetic. I've got 80kb/s upload, so I'm not really bothered about waiting 40 mins afterwards or not....
Lewis Gething
Which site is better in terms of compression? What is the max data rate of each? Anyone know? Personally, I feel vimeo is far better than youtube, but vimeo's search function is crap. The waiting time is exciting I find
Mark W
Used to use both, now only use youtube. Can't see a single benefit from using Vimeo but quite a lot of drawbacks. Yeah, I guess if you like having your videos embedded with very little control over how it looks, adverts being put over the top of them, having your music cut for copyright infringement, not being allowed to show videos in certain countries and so on Youtube must be ideal for you

As for ads, just use AdBlock Plus. It really blocks pretty much all of them.
Mark W
Yes, but that blocks them for your computer, but doesn't mean that it'll do the same for others. I don't necessarily want my videos to be associated with some random companies who happen to have ads running on Youtube, so I'd rather use a video service that doesn't use them in the first place. Preloading a video on Youtube then clicking to go full screen and having to reload it also sucks every one of the dicks on the planet.
