monkeyseemonkeydo
Ok, so I noticed yesterday that the frame on my motorbike is cracked pretty epically: The bit on the right is the start of the crack and the rest is a reflection of the crack travelling around the back side of the tube and round pretty much 50% of the tube . The frame's steel and sits about 40-50mm from the engine. I guess my question to anyone who has any experience with this sort of thing is whether the whole bike will need to be stripped to get back to frame only to weld or would it be just engine out of the way to get access? I'm just worried that welding without stripping could cause damage to the electrics or whatnot (I have no experience of welding at all...). The other option at the moment is to put the bike back to stock and trade it in to a garage so it's their problem!!
shamus
Depends what type of welding and who's doing it. There's fabricators I know who can weld 1mm wall steel tubes/plate without distortion in funky shapes and ridiculous spaces. I would suggest taking it to a fabricator who does delicate work or a auto restoration place, they are a dab hand at working in confined environments Although id be tempted to say any paint and electrics would need to be tucked away or removed (can also lag them to protect from heat) having said that if its near an exhaust manifold/routing then you're probably fairly safe. low voltage arc with a decent shield from my limited welding knowledge is best in small spaces as there's less stray heat. Best bet as mentioned above, auto restoring place and see what they suggest, most will quote for free/at least discuss it with you and offer advice. But it won't need to be frame only unless they say it needs anealing after. hope that vague answer is of some useJust re-read question. seriously doubt it'd be frame only. I know a few people that would manage that with the engine in place just with the mounts off. if that's the engine mount and the block is to the left, tank off, no problem. at worst its block out. try forteh he's the most wise on bike matters, I dare say he's cracked a few frames!! Ash-Kennard
rip it all apart, clean everything up, get the frame welded then cleaned up and painted?
monkeyseemonkeydo
rip it all apart, clean everything up, get the frame welded then cleaned up and painted? Can you say effort, Ash?! Only reason I'd strip it unless needed is if I decide to get it powder coated for the hell of it. Shamus- definitely useful- sounds like delicate electrics need to be removed (R/R, ECU, instrument cluster etc) but might take it into work at some point and get the resident welder to have a look, see how awkward he reckons it would be. shamus
Depends how close they are to the action! Instrument cluster would prob be alright as I'm guessing its yoke mounted? If you know a welded its definitely worth asking as I'm just guessing, haven't actually done much welding myself just learnt about it nd specify it lol
