Heart Monitor/bluetooth/laptop

I very rarely used the RSQ thread, but now it's gone I find myself needing it :P

I have an idea for a little project I'd seriously like to embark on, but there's one major stumbling block to overcome before I start.

I've never really needed to use Bluetooth before, so this may well be pretty n00bish.

The project will entail a heart monitor (something like this: http://www.amazon.co...ASIN=B005560PU4 [EDIT: Turns out that one's not Bluetooth capable, so assume I linked one that is :P]) communicating with a laptop. If it works, it might progress to work with a phone, but I need in on the laptop for starters. From what I can find on the net the chest units communicate with their watch via Bluetooth. Since my laptop has Bluetooth capabilities built in to it, could I get the signal to come through on that?

I don't know if there's different Bluetooth protocol's or anything that might make it impossible.

Just wanting to find out if it's a project doomed from the start before I spend any money.

I literally just want the data on the watch receives to come through on my laptop - be it a BPM, or a signal on each heart beat the unit detects and I'll work out the BPM on the laptop.

Cheers :)

What program or language are you using? Sounds like you need a heart rate monitor with its own api, and using the API to access the data sent from the monitor - you don't want to be reading the data it sends yourself (I doubt!)

http://appsparq.com/blog/?p=827 "The Wahoo Open API is still not the generic Bluetooth 4.0 Heart Rate Monitor standard API but provides a necessary front end to easy access to how the data is stored and retrieved easily!"

This is particularly good..

We just published the H7 sensor which uses the bluetooth smart protocol. It's an open standard, low energy technology, which all smart phones will eventually support. The new Polar H7 sensor makes use of three different standardized services:

- Heart rate service

- Battery service

- Device information service

To find out more about these services and to get instructions on how to start using them, please visit this Bluetooth SIG site:

http://developer.blu....vicesHome.aspx

So, scrap those 2 links, use the bluetooth smart protocol :)
