This deters me visiting the ring on anything other than a track day. Must be a challenge to efficiently Marshall a circuit of that size but better signalling could have prevented a pile up of that scale.

Cadwells light panel warnings are brilliant, perhaps a series of buttons around the circuit that could be activated by a driver in the event of a crash, should he/she be able, to illuminate Red/Yellow signals between marshall posts. Not only to alert drivers but also the marshalls themselves.

Want to go next year but I think I’ll do a day at Spa instead.

That guy got very lucky. 5 seconds later and his car would have been totalled.

I can't believe the ring doesn't have lights all around, it's not that expensive to fit a system like that... it's not like they don't earn much from the constant stream of cars coming though.

Lots of different posts all over the internet suggest that they make shit loads of money from crashes, but it's pretty shitty to put lives at risk for that reason.

The guy who stopped in the first place was a total cretin parking behind a crash, on a spot where if anyone is gonna skid, that is where they would hit, then standing 10 feet away essentially telling people to skid... Brilliant, well done.

Seen the state of the e36 that pulled off to the right, only to be destroyed by the porsche? ended up like a compact. I really have never seen any appeal whatsoever of nordschleife, the costs horrific from any accidents caused, you know the ring owners are seeing pure $$$ signs over that crash. Didnt someone on here have a pretty bad crash there, and got bailed out by some wealthy dude?

EDIT:just opened the link and saw the e36 posted...

Daihatsu charade
1 litre turbo, 67k, Some Service history, Been fully resprayed a month ago, Lowered on 60mm springs.
£1300 if anyone is interested.

Yeah that was Prawn, he went sideways at some ridiculous speed in the A3 and ended up with little enough damage to drive the car back to Britain after a lot of duct tape had been applied. And some American guy bailed him out.

That Daihatsu. I feel like you're my soul mate, I have one too! Such rare cars and a blast to drive.

The lack of marshalls on that Ring crash is scary. Was this a trackday or touristenfahren? If it was the former, I'd be suing.

c/p from cs.net

Right then, i'm finally at a computer so I can do a fairly big-ish update or at least an update that has encapsulated the last few weeks of working on Boris.

I've been really enjoying it again and having a heated garage has made a whole world of difference to my mood. I would never have been able to do any of this if I was at the side of the road so i'm lucky in that sense.

Firstly, the accelerator cable from the ph1 is now all in and connected however due to not having any carpet in the car the pedal could quite easily be overstretched which would snap the pedal so with a trusty m8 bolt and nut I now have a stop. Luckily that rivnut was already there from the pedal box.

You'll probably notice that there is infact a gaping hole in my floor too hahah, that needs welding over a bit.

Random shot of the new wheel which I don't think I ever pictured despite it being 4 months ago or so. Really happy with the interior now.

With the flash on, andddddddddd the wheel looks knackered already and it hasn't seen a single mile on the road haha

We had a vehicle show at work in summer which was brilliant, probably around 30 vehicles turned up with 2 awards available. One for most interesting and one for best in show....

38602312206_082f29f30b_b.jpg20171124_090207 by dann2707, on Flickr

Well happy with that result, especially as I had completely forgotten about an award to be handed out but this was the first engineering staff meeting we had had since summer. Quite a funny moment as I didn't pick up my trophy when the award was announced and tried to go back into the room to get it but I had to wait for c. 200 people to come out first and as I was stood by the door it looked like I was waiting for everyone to congratulate me as they left which they did hahahaha. awkwardddddddddd.

Moving swiftly on, fuel return line was next on the list of things to do. So I needed some pipe from the stock room ie back of my garage.

The hole here is where I am taking the feed from for the vacuum servo.

38626316882_36dcbda772_b.jpg20171124_164221 by dann2707, on Flickr

I then fitted the new rail with the 1/4 npt fitting which acts as the return for the fuel

38602289516_3a18283cae_b.jpg20171124_180038 by dann2707, on Flickr

As the return now protrudes where the dipstick goes I had to drill a new hole in the dipstick holder and bend the bracket a bit, coupled with a little spacer it looks OEM ish

I am not sure why I took this picture, there was probably some meaning behind it but I have no idea so here it is anyway.

38626260002_73ef044063_b.jpg20171124_180048 by dann2707, on Flickr

I then needed to create the return line into the sender unit. So at my trusty workstation ie kitchen breakfast bar I started assembling...

This is a bit of fuel pipe attached to the return line, this will direct fuel back into the swirl pot.

The next two photos show it better as to where it is now pointing, its going down the side of the fuel pump itself directly down into the collection of fuel. This means that when it returns its not being returned to anywhere in the tank, but into the swirl pot so fuel is always there.

May be able to see it better there, the black little tube pointing down.

I've got an inline filter on the way that I will be fitting to the feed fuel pipe.

Today's job was to fit the fuel pressure regulator. This is the jobby which I got from a saxo 8v. Runs at 3.5 bar so is absolutely perfect. My only gripe is that there is no decent mounting position for it but it's okay for now.

37770658685_af55698e35_b.jpg20171126_125125 by dann2707, on Flickr

Decided to mount it here, it's just held there in this pic

Rivnut again to the rescue which I rivnutted to the coil pack bracket which would hold the FPR crudely.

38658185821_acc9b313a4_b.jpg20171126_131600 by dann2707, on Flickr

FPR cable tied to that bolt then pipe work fitted. Luckily I've kept a load of fuel connectors from before so i've used them where I can, as you can see on the FPR inlet there.

Stupidly I didn't buy enough hose, I honestly thought 5 metres would do both the feed and return but I was wrong so Ive had to order some more but in the mean time I wanted to try it all out so the return was directed into the petrol can. Turned the car onto ignition and voila. pressure was released after a little bit.

38601916096_24050a04dc_b.jpg20171126_144227 by dann2707, on Flickr

I then wanted to start the car with the new set up, turned it over and boom, fired straight back into life although it sounded horrendous as it had no lambda or exhaust. The former because of the latter.

But overall i'm mega chuffed that it fired up despite the dicking around etc.

Another day another update.

I had some issues with my fuel needle not displaying correctly as per the below picture:

37770542885_9e55de16be_b.jpg20171126_144413 by dann2707, on Flickr

I remember going on the road trip and being massively disappointed with the rate the fuel needle was going down compared to my friends in their n/a clios but as it turns out my needle was just way off haha

Sorted that by removing the clocks and taking the needle off and putting it where it should be..
Nice easy fix.
24854739438_b7906dd8a0_b.jpg20171129_164735 by dann2707, on Flickr

So the past few days has had me re-routing the fuel lines which I never put on here. I've used some black P-clips to route the lines as neatly as possible. The original fuel line clips were too small so didn't allow this fuel line to be clipped in.

Needs properly fixing in place but you get the idea of where its going and what it's protecting.

I already have an idea of what i'm going to do with the smaller bit and it involves making a heat shield for the turbo as there are loads of bolt holes around it where the original heatshield used to be on the meg engine

Suffice to say I genuinely think it looks f**king ace back there and really makes the engine bay a bit nicer!

38727943781_727718cc2e_b.jpg20171129_164717 by dann2707, on Flickr

I sat in the car feeling pretty accomplished with the work this week knowing that I am 1000000000000000% happier with the new OEM pedal box, servo assisted brakes etc etc which was always on the back of my mind that the pedal box I had in there before just didn't feel that great for a 80/20 road/track car.

Tomorrow if I get time i'll wheel it out of the garage, give it a wash and wheel it back in ready for claying and detailing it in the garage over the period of a few weeks. I want to get it as shiny as it used to be as I was looking through some old photos recently and it used to be crazy clean.

Cheers.

Right boyos....

My stag do is next summer and the plan is to all chip in, buy some fun car to take to the ring, all share the car then drive home/leave as it's broken/leave as a deposit as someone's stuffed it - delete as applicable.

Budgets looking around 600-700, instantly I've thought semi tidy mk2 MX5, a friend of mine is a big fan of them and had quite a few too. He's recommended a few models which came from the factory with LSD and a few other bits which is cool.

Few other suggestions have been old volvo turbo bricks, old bmw e46 types and the usual assembly of cheap toys. We did consider splitting the budget in 2 and buying Micras, but I think the drive there would finish them off..

Anyone got anything pretty obscure but genuinely quite fun? Budget can be upped abit but to be honest I'd rather keep nearer that figure incase it gets trashed.

As much as I love a turbo brick, if you want to get a good number of laps at the ring I can't think of anything better than an mx-5 (consider a small brake upgrade though!). I was keen to do that for a recent stag do, but ended up in Amsterdam instead.

Speaking of bricks I should probably do some kind of update on here soon. Progress hasn't been great but the engine swap is happening on Sunday so I'll wait until after that.

Haven't posted much on here about the 740 so this is covering the last 4 months or so, slow progress!

Did quite a bit of wiring and "un-wiring" as I like to call it, on the loom that I took from my old 940. Also re-routing existing wires to suit the new battery and ECU positions (intending to put the battery behind the front seats). Much more wiring left to do.

DSC_0626

Did some porting on the exhaust manifold to better suit the slightly larger turbo housing.

IMG_20171025_224606

Removed some weights from inside the frame rails - yes there are literally weights inside the frame rails because Volvo.

DSC_0671

Extended part of the gear lever for shorter throw. Should be about 35% shorter.

DSC_0670

Room for activities:

DSC_0676

The car has been living inside the garage until yesterday but the engine crane would've hit the roof rafters if we tried to do this inside.

DSC_0677

Turbo engine mounted on Land Rover engine mounts which are probably my favourite part so far, because they're stiffer than standard and cost only £7.

DSC_0679

Now I can't get the car back inside the garage :P There's a decent size ramp in the way. I might try and push it with the Alfa, using a rigid tow bar type thing. It'll be a while before the Volvo runs as it needs a whole new fuel system, more wiring, mount the larger intercooler etc etc.

Edit: I was hoping this would start a new page, now there's tons of photos on this page!

Both cars are looking awesome guys.

Dan, is that fuel filter up the the pressure and flow of a turbo injection fuel system? It looks just like the ones I've always run on old carbed engines at 1/10th the pressure your engine will be running. Could be ok but may be worth checking if you haven't already.

I can't remember where I'm at in terms of updated on here but I finished off the cage the other day (besides a little tidying up).

It's pretty over the top, but at least it should be fairly well future-proofed, and if I run out of talent, hopefully my choice of a car from long before ncap won't bite me as hard.

I'm starting a new job in the new year which will need me to start commuting by car again, (I cycle at the moment) so I think the daily e36 will be seeing some love over the Christmas break in preperation. There's a rattle at low revs I need to sort (aux belt tensioner I think), and its due some fluids and filters.

Also, I wouldn't mind fitting some better speakers as mine sound terrible. Does anyone have any recommendations of half reasonable speakers that won't break the bank?

I fitted pioneer stuff in the ford Robin and they sound great for what they are. There's only 2 4" on the parcel shelf and 2 under the dash but it sounds really good. For 4" speakers they take some volume too without distortion.

They'd make great door speakers teamed up with something heftier in the back.
