Did you see a D reg Civic GT with yellow headlights?

My mate Pas was there with it, it's such a clean car - mega jealous!

You know Pas too? Shit, small world haha! He's got like 5 of them now or something? 2 or 3 GT's and some other less spec's, bloody nut case ha.

I do like a Corrado, I'd be tempted by one as a daily if the insurance wasn't so damn expencive.

If anyone remembers my post about deciding which car to keep a few weeks ago, I think I've decided I'm going to sort the Scirocco out, but with another diesel lump. I was swinging towards keeping the Passat and getting rid of the 'rocco, but after a long weekend of pissing around with cars I'm really keen to get something fun on the road again, so I'm going to settle with a half-way house of the 'rocco keeping a diesel engine, so it's no more expencive to run than the Passat.

So anyone want a '93 B3 Passat 1.6td Estate? Great car as a cheap, practical and epically reliable and economical mode of transport. (Engine needs 1 wire and some fuel to run, and it manages 57mpg on a run at 70, 47mpg around town, not bad for a big estate! Towing hitch fitted and roof rack included.)

How much robin? :P

I still haven't got any further with what or if I am going to buy anything. One day (usually when it's sunny :P) I think why not just keep running the mini it is coping ok? Then the next usually when it's miserable I start getting irritated and cold in it really want to go to track days sometime soon. Also the fact my two new front tyres have worn out cause the tracking is obviously out and have worn on the inside edge. Grrr

But then I need to get my bike license so I can do road trials, can only do one or the other, arghh decisions!!!

I'll be after ~£900 as it is now (i.e. with the coilovers and BBS), just because like Jardo says, you won't find a cleaner one for the money, or to be honest, you'd have a hell of a job to find a cleaner one at all now, especially a turbo diesel. There's 1 or 2 interior niggles, and 1 or 2 jobs I'll get done before it goes, and the wheels could do with fresh paint, but it's a seriously clean shell, and mechanically spot on.

Meant to say, I need to hang onto it until I've sorted the Scirocco, as living in the sticks I need a car virtually every day, so it won't be up for sale for a few weeks at least, but I'm happy enough to give someone first refusal if they want to agree something in the mean time, so I'll be asking around mates/here before putting any proper ads up.

Done some insurance digging and the insurance for the passat seems to much, however I came across a pleasant surprise. A mk1 mx5 is not bad at all for me to get insured on, my dad has liked the idea of having one for the last few years and he is on about chopping and changing cars soon plus my mum used to love the boxter we had. It is definitely food for thought.

Didnt you (robin) used to have an mx5 as a daily?

Went to a rally driving experience on Sunday. never had so much fun behind the wheel! Hopefully action shots in a few weeks.

I'd recommend it to anyone!

Full throttle on a muddy gravel forest stage in a 4wd scoop and evo was intense. Evo was way easier to drive as well.

Fair play, I haven't found it as cheep as I'd like to insure. It's not exactly expensive, it's just not as cheep as I'd expect considering what it is. You put it down as the 1.6td yeah? (not 1.9). Yeah, had an MX-5 for about 9 months, great car I just couldn't put up with the lack of space or fuel consumption as my only car. (33mpg taking it steady is frankly awful from a 1.6 n/a in a car weighing under a ton with good aerodynamics.)

try brent acre insurance company. they seem to look at older cars in a different light to all your other big firms as they see that people by them as they are vw enthusiasts ect. they specialise in modified, tuned, classic, kit cars ect so know all about cars. they are insureing me on the corrado 2.9l v6 which no compare site would even give me the time or day. for cars like this that are older your better off ringing up insures such as these plus footman james, adrian flux and so on.

Yeah, I'm with brentacre on the Passat at the moment, and have been for the last 3 years/4 cars! They weren't any cheaper than the comparison sites for me on the Passat, as at the end of the day it is just a '90s estate, but they weren't any more expensive either, and I know who I'd rather be insured with, plus this policy's let me modify it with no extra cost. (Oh yeah, I've got all the bits to put the Passat back to standard if that makes any difference, factory hub-caps and everything haha.)

I'm tempted by the Passat but I've only just got rid of one car I didn't use so I don't think the missus would be pleased - especially being as the only real reason to be interested is so I can tow a trailer and track car next year. Neither of which I own yet...

What's wrong with sticking a hitch on the 5-series? Probably rated to tow more than the Passat anyway.

Or you could just drive the car you already own to a track, drive round the track all day, then drive home?

A cracking idea, but it very rarely happens like that.

It is said that one mile on track is as good as ten on the road, track cars require such a level of upkeep that to run ond as a daily driver you would be mental. Especially an M5.

Looks, mainly! Though I've never had a hitch on the back of any of my cars so I don't know how easy it is to take them off when you're not using them?

Plus there's the issue of not being able to drive it on the limit in case you smash it up, as well as the fact it'd cost far more to make trackworthy which would in turn ruin its daily driver benefits. It's not an M5 though ;)

Not worth the risk IMO.

You could buy an MX5 for less than a grand which would teach you how to drive, be just as fun and cost 10x less in the long run.

Then when you are done you will always sell it and get your money back, or if you bin it then you've lost a cheap car that you've had lots of fun in.

That's the way to go IMO, cheap MX5 and spare set of wheels and do a couple of track days, then buy a set of coilovers, then in a month or so's time a set of buckets and harnesses, another couple of months and a set of big brakes. Before you know it you have progressed from a cheap novice track day to competetive and competent with a great car.

Personally I wouldn't risk my daily driver; given the cost of something much better suited like an MX5.

Probably wanna do a few trackdays first anyway though, unless you really wanna go in at the deep end!

Definitely certain I want to go in at the deep end. I have an absolute need to race that I've had since I remember - I've just never had the cash to be able to do it relatively properly.

That's also why I'm more likely to buy something that is race prepped already, or at least part way there. The less work between handing cash over and getting on track the better for me! I'm a couple of months off doing that though anyway...
