dann2707
Updates galore! Made some decent progress this weekend and last. A mate came over last weekend to do my timing belt for me. The guy is an absolute whiz and he managed to do it in an hour or so. Then some mates came over to mine for pizza, beers and a night out. Was a great night and lovely to see them both Me and matty arranged my nuts and bolts into these lin bins that arrived! So good to have them organised like this. We then began to wire up the engine with the clio harness And found some discrepancies with some connectors. The clio phase 1 throttle body uses a tps as it's cable operated so that was one of the issues. Also the Tdc sensor in the gearbox was different, as was the map sensor connector. Fairly simple fixes though. Popped my wheels on and rolled Boris forward so I could get a washing machine in around the back. Got me excited to get it sorted as I'm sick of driving a slow car for work. The next step was to change the throttle body wiring so that it runs with the phase 1 tps. Had to find continuity in the wires of the ecu to the original 6 wired plug, Labelled up The next issue is wiring the map sensor in. I'm using the clio loom and the map sensor on the Megane is a different connector so I want to use the Megane map connector on the clio loom. However the clio is 123 on the wires and the Megane is abc or vice versa. I need to get the Megane 225 wiring ecu pin out so I can find out which is 5v, signal and earth.if anyone can help me that would be awesome! Clio on left Megane on right The next job was the wrap this bad boy Not bad for a first attempt.. Followed some advice online and wet the wrap first. Didn't find any advice online telling me it's fibreglass based so that was hilarious itching like f**k all evening.. I then fitted the uprated 630cc injectors And a parcel of goodies arrived Load leveller for the engine and box 197 thermostat Phase 1 accelerator cable Flywheel bolts Flywheel to clutch cover bolts. Turned out they're not m7 on the lightened flywheel so that was a lovely waste of £17 Ttv are m6 for anyone reading this in the future Changed the stat When locating the wires for the carbon cannister I found this! The insulation around it was also very brittle. So I taped them up, wonder what they were causing to go wrong. I fitted the short shifter today too. That started to become a bit of a ballache. You have to punch put a roll pin which decided to teach me NOT to use a Torx screwdriver to do said punching. Finally came out after much swearing and abuse. I spanked it to Halfords to get a roll pin kit, two sets of vice grips (long nose and normal) and a punch and chisel kit. Got it on though. Not just waiting to be told I've got it on the wrong way... Haha It was fitted like for like for the original so should be correct. I then started to remove the stud from the Megane gearbox mount. Turned out I could have just used it but I'd have to take apart the clio solid mounts and I'm not sure how they come apart after much head scratching. Turned out I can just remove this stud. And fit with clio stud. It was a bitch to remove even with heat but finally cracked it off. I then fitted the decat to the engine and started to take it off the stand ready to fit other parts Flywheel fitted with the new bolts Clutch on.. Then mated the gearbox up with a few bolts to bring it together. Need to clean up the surfaces where the bolts go as I'm not fitting them over painted areas. Finally stuck the load leveller on and called it a night knowing I've made fairly decent progress this weekend. Should be getting the engine in next week after work, I just need to fit the starter motor too. Then I need a few more parts, oil cooler for one and an alternator.
Jolfa
First time I did heat wrap I did it dry wearing nothing but shorts, sitting on my bed, up there as one of the stupidest things I've ever done car-wise Looks good though, actually a bit exciting seeing progress, I can actually spot the difference! Jolfa
In considerably less exciting NZ wheeler dealing car news - Bought this for $500 g Had no MOT because the floor is all stoved in where the guys kids beached it at some point, they also seemed to like doing handbrake turns a LOT. A more friendly tester and 2 part worns later = $1000 profit, after using most of the petrol it came with running it to work and back for 2-3 weeks Now I've got this $2500 (making it the third most expensive vehicle I've ever bought) dream come true If you've ever been to New Zealand you'll likely know that being "self contained" with a camper is a big deal, it basically means you have a sink and a toilet as well as somewhere to sleep and have a card and a sticker to prove it to fine happy patrols. This thing has everything any camper would ever dream of and more, worth $6000 easy and anything up to $8000, however I've fallen in love with it a bit and now I'm in 2 minds whether to punt this on or swap it for our other, much smaller camper. Life is hard
forteh
To get rid of fibreglass, have a shower as absolutely hot as you can stand, lather and rinse before turning the water cold. The fibres get in your pores, the heat opens them, soap washes out and the cold closes them again before you inadvertantly introduce more fibres from the water. Having a grp sister company has its benefits
SamKidney
Got the CRX finished last night. Such a brilliant little car! Engines running lovely, and with the Koni shocks/springs, adjustable camber arms and some decent tyres it's completely transformed it. Jealous that it isn't mine to enjoy! Luke Rainbird
So, another week another boring update As I assume has been the case everywhere, the weather here has been pretty rubbish this week. Mostly heavy rain showers though some hail and sleet too. As a result, I headed indoors on the most part and figured I'd try and get a little more done to the engine whilst it was on the stand. Coolant hard lines first, I grabbed the line I'd removed from the AYP engine when I picked it up, which looked like this: Turns out that it's somewhat different the LCR (AMK/BAM) line, which was a bit of a pain. Some of the take offs are different and some don't exist at all. It'd be possible to connect the dots using hoses, but I'd like to keep things close to stock to ensure it goes in the bay and all plumbs in as easily as possible. Then I remembered there was one on the spare AMK lump I'd recently acquired: Whizzed the short/cut off hoses from it and cleaned it all up. Spot on with one exception... Turns out the o-ring that mounts to the 'stat housing had seen better days and looked to have been bodged with a little silicone too. Back to the AYP line to pinch the (fortunately decent) seal from there. Whilst I could have gone for a brand new one, it was in near-new condition so I'm happy it's up to the task. That said, if it leaks I'll throw a new one in. Whipped out the EGT sensor whilst I was hiding from the rain. Looks to be an M12x1.0mm thread so I'll get a stainless boss knocked up so I can fit it to the DP when I get it welded up. Seems to be the best spot for it when doing the k04-064 conversion, given I don't want to modify the integrated exhaust manifold to take it. Will have to factor in the drop in EGT by that point when mapping though of course... Has a slight nick in the braided shielding, so I may look to repair that down the line. That said, I may forget. We'll see. Assembled another set of shelves in an attempt to create a little more space in the garage. It helped, though I still need to go through and organise a few other bits and figure out a better solution for the bikes/boards (wall/roof mounting) With that sorted, there was a brief break in the rain so I popped out to the car. Figured it was time to throw in a new cabin filter. I was right. I'd been meaning to refit the arch liners I'd removed XXX amount of time ago for reasons I forget, and kept not doing it so that was the next job. First up scrubbing out the accumulated dirt and grime so as not to leave filth rotting away back there, then refitting the cleaned liners with all new bolts. Look at the state of that water, grim! A few showers later, the sun came out and so did Brownie. A few little bits under the bonnet between dodging the showers, with the foreman casting a scruitineering eye over all the work to make sure it was up to scratch. By the time we were done, it was getting dark and even wetter outside. Given we'd had a pretty heavy session the night before (culminating at around 7am) we figured it was safest to head indoors for a quiet social one. Pulled out the Corbeaus for some Forza They were soon hijacked So we shoved some beanbags out instead and cracked on Next day, I'd hoped to do a few minor pre-MOT bits. Nothing major, but I wanted to swap some wheels over to get the best tyres on (I'm waiting on a new set to arrive this week, annoyingly) and refitting the engine undertray. Popped out to the parents place to say hi, and pinched their campervan leveling ramps They're only really designed to help compensate for slightly sloping campervan pitches, so don't give much room but it's easier than jacking things up Enough for me to stick my head/arms under, only to realise that the undertray couldn't go on due to some light damage on its own mountings and a missing piece of trim below the gearbox. Ah well, I guess that gives a decent excuse to do something a little different down the line Anoyingly, the weather drew in again so I ventured back indoors. @Prawny Baby was kind enough to send a spare flywheel/pressure plate my way to try out, but it was looking a little tired. I'm well aware that it'll ever get seen and will only get dirty again, but it was raining and I had paint and a wire brush to hand... With no sign of the weather letting off, it was getting late. Many moons ago I'd had the subframe assembly off to fit an ARB and the tracking was a little out when refitted as I'd not centred the steering wheel (mong). I'd considered getting the tracking sorted but given my plans at the time were to drop the subframe again and fit a 3" DP, I didn't bother. The wheels were straight so things drove fine, however as the steering wheel was out by more than 4.5 degrees it popped up a code. Straightened things up by eye (to within tolerance) and went for a 15 mile drive so thing would settle down, leaving the engine running whilst clearing the code and resolving the issue. Bingo, clear dash for MOT (once I'd put some fuel in anyway!). These two were wondering what the hell I was doing. Standard. Ended the weekend with a fresh ticket. Good to go for another 12 months and that's a green light for finalising the engine swap really...
RobinJI
Nice to see some progress Luke, and good to hear the engine swaps imminent I've finally got around to starting a build thread for the Porsche, so if anyone's interested in following it's progress in a (hopefully) less sporadic manner than my updates on here: http://retrorides.proboards.com/thread/196124/1982-posche-924-road-project
Luke Rainbird
Thanks mate. Cool to see the Porsche all in one spot - will be good to follow it Looking forward to getting it in (giggity) once I can work out the best time - I'm away for the next 5 weekends so those are all out of the question, and with a potential new job starting in the first week of April with a few weeks away that pushes things back further. We'll see. Small update: Ok, not so much, but I did receive some parts off a slow boat from China... New reducing elbow for the 80mm TIP and a Coldside DV relocation kit as I've decided I can't be bothered to try and cram it all in on the hotside as that corner of the bay is tight. Won't look quiiiiiiiiiite so clean, but with a bit of work should do the trick. Quick test fit (using 63mm charge pipe as I don't yet have a TIP made up...): Initial impressions are decent. Hoses are nice and thick/stiffer than many I've used/seen before, despite costing a fraction of the usual UK prices. I'll likely cut down the DV takeoff on the relocation hose as it sits a little high (below) but that can wait until it's in the car. Excuse the fact the DV itself is in the wrong way, was only really there to hold things together! Need to get the metalwork welded up (annoyingly I don't have the skills, which would speed things up a bit) but then it shouldn't be too long before I can think about getting it in the car. Only minor issues being I have no free weekends for the next month and potentially start a new job at the start of April with a month away from home - doh!
dann2707
Works track day at curby has been booked. They're classing it as a team building day so no deduction from holiday and it's paid for. Awesomeeeee
SamKidney
Peugeot reinsured as of Monday. Managed to slash the price in half! Down to £480 for the year as against £900+.. Found a gearbox for the Coupe that I'm collecting on Tuesday night, booked in for a 4 point alignment the Friday after. New insurer has said it's not a problem to add a second car to the policy, so all being well I don't have to worry about everyday use in the Civic if I have the 306 to mince about in day to day. Eyeing up an M Factory rebuild kit for my current gearbox, Carbon lined syncros, ATS 1.5 way LSD and DC5/CRV 4th 5th and 6th gears (closer ratio). Need to source a different brake prop valve as my rear brake effort is pitiful at best, though I'm considering rerouting the lines inside the car, doing away with a factory prop and fitting an adjustable bias valve. Hoping to get a day at Cadwell or Oulton booked mid April! Edited March 8, 2017 by SamKidney

Another incremental bit of progress: This is "Trevor", or so the message from DPD told me. Turns out his name is actually Ben, and he's a nice chap. He brings me gifts. Boost and Felix approve. Tom Booth
Fkin' caddy broke down yesterday! Driving back from work I was coming down the A38 about 70ish and it stuttered, only for a split second. Then about half a mile later it lost power and wouldn't pull anything over 1300rpm, I managed to get off the dual carriageway and onto a side road. A yellow coil light was flashing on the dash and it idled like a bag-o-shite. After 10 minutes or so the light still flickered but it idled considerable better. I drove up and down the lane a couple of times and it settled back to its previous state. AA came out, cleared the fault codes which removed the light but 100 yards down the road it was back so towed home. I can't remember the diagnostics code or description exactly but it refered to a failure in communication between ignition and components I think. AA monkey seemed to think that there's a wiring loom that runs into the rocker cover that gets covered in oil and turns brittle that can cause abit of havoc. Anyone had anything like this? It's a 1.6tdi 2011.

Got the kit, played with it, made his own tubular manifold and poked 430 ponies from the 2 litre turbo. Not the prettiest welding but it worked quite nicely and he learned a handy new skill. Do it, learn new stuff, tig is pretty easy and oh so calming and peaceful
dann2707
Today was a good day. Went straight after work to go collect a work bench And installed a vice onto it. Weird how it's made things so much easier already, it sounds stupid but even just leaving sockets on there whilst I get something. Marked where I am to cut the cambelt cover Then a mate dropped me an alternator off as mine was siezed up. Fitted that along with the stretch belt and tensioner. Then fitted the engine. Didn't take too long at all really. Just a bit of persuasion of the chassis with a hammer Then the final product.. Finally I painted the alternator after those pics and called it a night. All the little things can come together now. Just an oil cooler and Remap now for the major expenses. £450 ish at a guess

Jolfa
Bought this, you've never seen 2 young lads act so f**king twitchy about selling a car, turns out that is largely because the head gasket is blown but it takes a good long while to start overheating. $300 though, the snow chains in the boot and scrap will cover most of that if K-seal doesn't sort it
