The Car Thread

As Paul says Mike, If your car is a keeper I'd look at improving on his work. Is there any access holes to your inner sills? Can you get in there if you take the lower belt bolt out? I'd lash that full of a good quality wax oil. Don't buy any multibuy eBay crud, try and aim for something good and load both sides full. You'll stand a better chance of these repairs lasting. Try and find some of the aerosols with the long flexi nozzle to get in all the nooks and crannies

The re-spray is going to cost me less than £300. Both sills will cost £480 in total.

To do it properly you're looking at £400 per side and then £1000+ for a spray.

The car cost me £900.

If it was a Porsche Boxster or an S2000, your points would be valid, but it's just a sub-grand weekend / track toy that I can throw around.

Spending more money on the Subaru as every day goes by.

I just got home to a PM from somebody I message a week ago about a set of Girodisk floating front discs for sale, he had them up for £250 and I offered £200. He sold them, but just messaged me saying the guy has backed out and never paid up. I've spoken to the person who was buying them to make sure I'm not being scammed and it is legit.

So they're on their way.

Then like an idiot I spent most of today looking at stock location GT30's. If I'm getting it mapped which is going to cost £600 and give me 380BHP I might as well spend £925 and have an Alcatek ECU fitted and mapped, and I might as well spend a grand on a billet stock location GT30 and have 450BHP, because the £600 will be wasted if I get bored of 380BHP.

£2200 (when you factor gaskets and new bolts) for 120BHP is ridiculously cheap and will keep it 50BHP under the recommended ''blowing up'' territory as long as I have a bit of lag.

I am slightly amazed at how easy it is to get big power out of these STI's; but then they aren't designed like the cars I'm used to. They were always built to be a fast car, so I guess it's to be expected.

Same, there's quite a few decent channels out there nowadays. I spend far too much time watching it all.

Getting my windows tinted on Sunday, and doing a little DIY paint job. I might as well focus on aesthetics if I can't go fast! People seem to like it though, I get a surprising amount of comments.

Anyone going to RetroRides Gathering?

Anyone fancy a bit of old school VW?

Mk1 Volkswagen Golf Karmann Convertable.

- Recent roof replacement, all sealed.

- Roof rewired, works flawlessly

- New front shocks

- Rear brakes renewed, new handbrake cables

- Wheels are not original but I believe i have them hidden away somewhere

- Alloy wheels, refurbished, X 4 new tyres.

- Stacks of paperwork

- 1.8 Petrol

- Alarm and immobilisor fitted

Has been dry stored for the two years I've had it, and will come with a full 12 months MOT. Was garaged by the previous owner for almost 10 years and seldom used, only in the summer months. The shell is the cleanest Mk1 I have seen. Little to no rust on the sills, or floor corners. Arches and wings are extremely clean. Fully under sealed/waxoiled. Appears to have had a respray in the non too distant past. The finish when clean is properly good.

Photos are poor but I plan to dig it out of the store next week and give it a full detail and valet, and get some more. Not much room in there as Toyota use it to store their cars that aren't on the forecourt.

Id have loved to keep it but after using their space for two years it has to go. Storing it elsewhere will undoubtably do it harm.

Well, what a f**king awesome weekend. I went to my parents house Friday and had a bbq with abi. Whilst that was cooking I washed Boris. He's been at home for a few weeks and abs caught my first reaction on camera haha

All washed

I then took him for his mot. Passed with one advisory.

Then onto the tar removal. Abi cracked on with that!

Then I made a start on tidying the rear loom so it's all hidden.

And afters. Still got some more tidying to do but it looks much better

Trialled the paint too. Let dry overnight and I'm really happy with it.

Thank you very much for the replies guys.

I did some more bits to it yesterday, that included tidying the loom some more and removing the glue left over from the tar. Really easily done and not as bad as people make out on here - Simply rubbed it with automotive tar remover in a car. £3.30 for a small tin and used half of it.

Wrapped some of the wires up that were loose such as this:

I moved the earth cable for the rear lights as it trails down really low and looks ugly. Went from here...

To nut and bolted behind here. @Ben NBR Cup that is how i've done it, saves it trailing down!

Alternator belt snapped this morning on the way to work, local ford guy I normally used is too busy to squeeze it in as a foreigner, local halfords autocentre couldn't get onto it tomorrow but couldn't give a price, local ats refused to even quote saying it was outside of their skillset :o

Looked at it at lunchtime with one of the welders (who does a fair amount of his own car work) and within 10 minutes got the tensioner backed off and pinned in place ready to put a new belt on.  Went to halfords (2 minute walk from work) and a new belt is 15 quid and delivered in a couple of hours :)

Much easier to change than the one on my old focus, only got three pulleys and the tensioner to worry about.

6 minutes ago, Prawny Baby said:

Why no spreader plates under the cage lIve  Dan?

needs sorting mate

Ive never understood this as the feet spread out the load anyway due to their size. Sure it needs them underneath though which it has.
