The Car Thread

If anyone knows of someone scrapping a (red) Mk4 Golf I'll happily take it off their hands. My car's started eating itself over the past month and now has a growing list of qualms. And I can add quite a major one to the list now.

Just went to have a look and it turns out the knocking and bad handling coming from the front end is being caused by the offside spring deciding it's had enough

Well the welder I bought lasted about 10 minutes before the handle melted itself to pieces. The welder does an ok job but the wire feed is automatic and runs off the main transformer so speed varies depending on how hard it is working causing an inconsistent wire feed speed. A new SIP torch wasn't cheap, the welder isn't quite pants enough to chuck away and I also wanted the option of running gas later on so i got modifying.

It now has a relay were the original wire feed is that triggers a PWM controller with a digital readout, this gives me adjustable wire speed that isn't affected by how hard the welder is working. It also has a new torch (not euro as it costs too much for such a basic welder) which has a gas valve in it so I can run disposable bottles if I want to. I now need to make it easier to change the polarity of the welder so that I can switch from gasless to gas quickly and painlessly. Pretty chuffed that I sorted it, less chuffed that it owes me £60 in total now... thats a nice chunk towards something better!

Some mediocre drifting:

Had to drive the whole journey home (60 miles) at 40mph because of a knackered wheel bearing.

It's going to be retired in a few days time to make way for bigger and better things. :( Had it for three very awesome years. I will miss it very much.

Cleaned up my valve train this evening. Spray bars and caps and all the galleries blasted out after soaking in paraffin.

The oil pump I had for it turns out to be wrong, so I've had my old one it bits and replaced the pump rings themselves. Cleaned the housing in the parts washer and all reassembled with some assembly lubricant.

It's cool that we get these kinds of videos nowadays - would have been interesting to see some historic moments from the past with this kind of thing.  It also highlights how f**ked in the head endurance racing is - the rainy, night stuff at the end looks pretty full-on.

This is the 10min edited version to the above link which shows just the north loop at night, including more of the lap used after the transition cut midway though the carousel on the above extended 30min version.

With either version. do yourself a favour - Plug into some good speakers/headphones, load it up in HD, Turn all the lights off so wherever you are is pitch black, and  properly immerse yourself into that GT3-R Porsche at 12 o'clock at night, on your own in the pissing rain, with the steering wheel pointing the wrong way and it's 5th gear aquaplaning in a straight line...
