The Car Thread

That sucks.  We did a 4-person one at Blyton and it wasn't too bad, but we were pretty lucky with not getting many red flags and having a good amount of daylight then.

In the continuing adventures of "Nobody gives a f**k", as much as a reminder for me later on as anything else this is the approximate route I did today:

If it takes you 2hrs 31mins you're doing it wrong.  Realised looking back on it now there was another loop I could have done that would have joined up those two sticky-uppy bits at the top of the triangle.  Next time...

Ive got wheels!

Landed my hands on some VTi fan blades. All straight and round with minimal marks but they do need refurbishing.

Theyre going to get sorted tomorrow, which leaves tyres. I had ordered Pilot Sport 3s but the tyre bloke we use called the next day and he had none in. Final suggestions?

Im ordering them first thing tomorrow and would like to get it as right as I can first try without having to hate them their entire wear life

Adam / anyone else who knows MX-5's;

I'm going to be replacing my oxygen sensor and butchering the wire to extend it (4-2-1 manifold means the sensor is further back, OEM wire is too short).

Currently the car idles a bit off sometimes (1100rpm) and if you rev it a bit you can smell excess fuel coming out of the 'zorst. The fuel consumption has always been much worse than others in the club, so something's off.

If the oxygen sensor replacement doesn't solve it, any ideas what else could be causing it?

It's the oxygen sensor... The MX-5 runs closed loop under 4.5k rpm and less than full throttle, so it takes a reading from the lambda sensor to manage the air fuel ratio. For all 'normal' driving it will be running rich as hell without the lambda sensor connected / working.

That will possibly be linked to your oil consumption too. Too much fuel washes the oil off the cylinder walls, which can lead to knackered piston rings and scoring the bore of the block, and therefore they don't seal properly.

Just for dan ;)

Crimp it, solder it and then add mechanical support that affixes to both the crimped connector and the wire, ensuring that it surpasses the soldered joint boundary.

The theory being that a crimp can introduce a poor electrical connection and increase resistance, solder gives an excellent electrical connection but the joint/wire can work harden very easily and result in broken wires in the loom. Multi core wires are also prone of failure where the solder joint ends, hence the requirement for an additional mechanical support in the form of a gland or heatshrink tube :)

Once you've done that you can have a wank :D

The question stemmed from a loom i'm currently doing in which i have 4 wires to connect.  Currently they are soldered and covered in heat shrink. They are in a big bundle of 10+ wires so shouldn't move much.

At some point i will need to shorten the loom too, but i'm planning on sourcing replacement pins and re-pinning the plugs.

We're going to get something in the calendar for next year. Maybe if we actually plan something, it will happen.

Looks like an epic drive, shame it's about 4 hours away from me, I'll spend a few days up there some time, maybe throw in Anglesea while I'm there...

Whereabouts do you live?  I know some routes in the South/Mid Wales area that would link up to this that could be pretty fun depending on where you are.  Getting some Anglesey action in the mix would be a really, really good shout!

I dont think the photo does them justice, but Im inclined to agree in a sense.

3 of them were already black and one came in primer, so the logical cheap solution before I get them refurbed properly was to go over them again in black to neaten them up.

Id like to do them an anthracite grey next year, or maybe even just revert them back to an OEM silver for originality.
