ItsMatt
Been quoted £400 to insure a 1990 (ish) 1.9 Peugeot 306 xld for my first car on third party f&t It's a shame the tax is around £270 due to dirtyyy emissions. Time to save up i think! Edited September 17, 2015 by ItsMatt
SamKidney
Pay it monthly Matt, doesn't seem as bad then
monkeyseemonkeydo
Did they make 306's in 1990? Edit: Wikipedia says no. 93 was the first year.
CurtisRider
When you think about it £670 to tax and insure a first car is still very cheap, most people pay in excess of £1000 just to insure a car. Unless you can find something else as cheap to insure then that would be a sensible choice to go with the 306, pretty sound cars with that engine if you can handle the looks and frenchness. MadManMike
My first car was £1400 just to insure. 1.1 106.
AdamR28
Exactly the same for Mike! Went to Maplin at lunch, started after work, now have a functioning auto downshift blipper Just needs fine tuning on the road... That switch I'm flicking with my finger will be triggered by the rocker when the down paddle is pulled. I can set how long the throttle is opened for by bending the tab which closes the switch, and how far it opens by shimming the solenoid closer or further away from the mount. Also has a switch on the dash to disable the whole lot for road driving, and when shifting from neutral to 1st!
Luke Rainbird
I paid around £1200 on a 1.0 Fiat Uno. Didn't do much to help the (non-locking) petrol cap from randomly going AWOL and spewing fuel every corner until you realised, mind... Pete.M
Buying old cars has still become slightly more expensive, because the prices haven't really dropped despite the lack of tax they come with.. £400 seems amazing. I might be acquiring something tomorrow, we'll see.
ItsMatt
Oh I wasn't complaining about the insurance cost, it's surprisingly low. Although I will need some form of income to fund everything, I'm having bad luck finding a part time job to fit in around my college schedule. At least I will have the car on me mams drive way to tinker with
SamKidney
1.9 Turbo? Turn fuel pump right up and wind the actuator rod right up to keep the wastegate on the turbo closed haha. Had a surprising amount of fun with one
ItsMatt
1.9 Turbo? Non turbo unfortunately, roughly 130k on the clock, zero rust and all original everything. I've not had too much experience with working on cars but I can't wait to get stuck in.
SamKidney
Non turbo mechanical diesel, nice Mega reliable though. Got MoT? Jack the back end up, grab the rear wheel at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock positions and check for play in the rear axle on both sides. They're good for going and at 130K Itll be doing well not to have any play.
Joe Aston
If the rear axle is screwed a replacement isn't very expensive and realativly easy to replace. Refurb units can be had for £150 ish or a patent part for similar.
BJ.
Just wondering if anyone could help me out. Got into my car this morning and while pulling off my drive way I noticed a clunk in my steering. I stopped the car and turned the wheel from left the right a few times and noticed as the wheel gets past the central point I can hear a clunk noise and can feel it in my feet. Car is a 2013 Mercedes C Class is that helps. Cheers. Edited September 18, 2015 by BJ.
Jolfa
Where is the clunk coming from? Do the wheels still point in the directions they should? Has there been any kind of symptom besides the noise? Has the noise just appeared or grown over time? Is it getting worse? Does the steering feel notchy as the clunk occurs? Is that getting worse? Have you checked anything whatsoever in the general steering component areas before continuing to use the car? Have you Googled it? Could be any of the steering or nearby components on the info provided Edited September 18, 2015 by Jolfa

It only appears while the car is started, cant hear the clunk from outside but i think that's due to engine noise. It seems to have came on suddenly but it did hit a pothole the otherday so that could have caused it, and the steering does feel notchy. I've checked the PS Fluid and thats fine and i've had a look under the bonnet and the only thing i've noticed is a noisy belt. I Googled it but can only find things for older cars saying it could be the ball joints/ suspension but this seems unlikely on a pretty new car unless the mentioned pothole has caused damage. Might be the telescopic link between your steering rack and the steering wheel boss itself. They have two joints in them and a telescopic midsection. If it's been bent by something or the nylon bushes in the joins go you will get that "clunk" at certain points through its steering range
greg1040
Car is now working again been mega busy so its sat there doing nothing and battery was pretty dead. So 30 mins today and alternator was changed over jump started car and voltage wasnt dropping . Im not to happy with the front cage fitment its maby just me been tall but with a helmet on unless i slouch slightly it hits the cage. It can defs go a few inches higher if i grind away parts of the roof in the corner so will get 2 new bars and refit next year once weather is looking better again. Anyways car is going to get used as a daily for a bit so a half cage will do me just fine till next year. Wheres everyone taking oil temps from? 1 option i have seen is use a oil sandwhich plate between the filter and plumb in oil pressure and oil temp sensors and take it from there, others are taking it from sump plugs ect. Just looking for best option so i can have this also on my dash. Edited September 19, 2015 by greg1040

Pete.M
Because owning 2 old Volvos is clearly a good idea when you are unemployed. Went on a 9 and a half hour bus journey all the way to London to look at this last night and then drove it back today. Think I must be a little bit mad. It's far from perfect but does the job. I know it seems stupid but eventually it should become something very fun, but for now it's a daily because the other one is starting a new life as a drift wagon.

I've got a mocal thermostatic sandwich plate on top of it though for my oil cooler, i thought I'd get a decent quality one because it's more crucial.
