The Car Thread

So ive returned my cheap prosport coilovers without even opening the box! After the pain I had with the dodgey downpipe I've temporarily had enough of playing with cars! Still got a dodgey door lock module which is irritating but I can live with it.

Thinking to the future when I may have to buy something sensible. Does there exist a 50+ mpg disel car with a modest amount of power for £3.5k?

Went to Combe today with Ticcy, met Pierre and Toby there, had a great time in questionable weather!

It's done nothing for my insanely strong desire to go racing though, I feel its drawing inevitably closer, I just haven't figured out how to fund the idea just yet!

One of the guys on course passed his driving test over leave and bought this 2 days later. It was (evidently) too dark to have a proper look, but from what I could see under torchlight it's in really good condition and mostly original too. Needs a couple of very minor bits sorting out, but nothing urgent/massive. Took it out for a quick spin along the seafront and it drive well :)

A question for Jardo:

The mk4 MX-5, I've read that BBR are getting hold of it - will that be something available through dealers or is it something you take to BBR after buying?

What's the deal on 2.0 sports at the moment?

I'm genuinely considering getting one early next year, but I'm not sure what I'd need in terms of deposits etc...

I'd like a car with a warranty as my daily, so I can properly rip the Eunos apart and get it sorted for track days.

If I were to keep the ITBs it needs mapping really, it's on a base map but far from perfect. It's running higher volume injectors to go with the added breathability it has but the fuelings all over the place. Trundled all the way through bradford at 30 and as soon as I got to the bingley bypass into Vtec it emitted the most black smoke ive ever seen. All unburnt fuel haha. Now it's home it's being parked up and sorted with a proper manifold and ecu, and hopefully vastly improved fuel economy haha

Yeah its not being driven, I'm going to collect the micra tonight. I was worried about bore wash however sat at 60mph the engine seemed to run happiest, so I sat there and it's been golden otherwise.

It's more the cost. The chip the base map is loaded onto won't be accepted by many "tuners" as its limited in its capability so I'd require another chip with an ecu to suit with a basemap before I even consider having it mapped properly.

I've got everything to back to a more oem setup that will still show good results over standard. The ITBs are fetching £300+ so I can sell them and get it running properly with change to spare

£50 for a new one for mine Luke, can't grumble!

Greetings, that video has been about a while but yeah it is amazing. I teach Design and Technology, which is often dubbed as the subject for thickos and we receive many students who struggle massively at anything academic as well as the naughtier folk who actually tend to be amazingly creative and talented in the subject. Unfortunately (and fortunately in other aspects) D&T has become less about making and increasingly more academic, alienating students like the lad in your video who obviously has massive talent but would suck at an exam paper and therefore would look rubbish on paper and struggle to find a job as easily as somebody with great grades who may not actually be as able to apply the knowledge required for exams into a real life situation. It's quite upsetting watching these students 'fail' thinking they can't be successful, and regardless of how much help and moral support you give them, they struggle to gain any self belief (not helped by a lack of support at home). The education system is flawed and that's one of many reasons why I'm trying to find a new career.

Productive evening.

Car in workshop.

Drain oil, new oil filter, millers 10w40

New plugs and fuel filter

Weld hole in exhaust manifold.

Remove tweak and refit exhaust

Advance distributor a fraction, runs miles better

Dissasble Prelude callipers, clean and rebuild

Remove small brakes

Fit 282 discs, prelude callipers and carriers with new pads

Flush and bleed brake system

Brakes are sooooooo much better than the piddly 242s it had before.

Cars parked up now, removing the ITBs tomorrow ready for a standard inlet.

The thing that annoys me about that video is that there's no mention of the fact that he's clearly had a huge amount of funding to build that, hardly off his own back was it..

It's not amazing that he's created it reaaaally, given enough money and the facilities to build something like that I'm sure tonnes of people could create a similar beast. Instead they have jobs and spend their time earning money, he's been given the opportunity to build it. That's the amazing part about it.

Don't get annoyed at it, that's just ridiculous.

I look forward to you putting something together.

Annoyed was the wrong word, apologies. It's the way they have reported it I don't like, what he's made is clearly very impressive.

The whole underlying message being that the education system stops young people from doing imaginative projects like these. I'd rather know more about the project than how he did in year 11.

Soooooo. Painting wheels.

You may recall I painted my wheels gold (Yep, a strong choice, which I instantly didn't really like.)

I noticed at the weekend that there was some stone chips and a patch is beginning to flake. Not too annoying, because I was planning on re-doing them anyway, in gunmetal.

I've bought the paint (including primer and clear coat), but would like to avoid making the same mistakes this time.

I think the reason the paint hasn't stuck properly is because I left the primer to dry for too long - does that sound right?

I cleaned the wheels properly and primed them well, the paint I used is specifically for alloys too.

Any tips to avoid flaking paint this time around??
