haydon_peter
Hi everyone, long time no speak. I will be back in the UK very soon for the foreseeable future and will be needing a vehicle ASAP. Ideally I want another VW Passat Estate but am open to suggestions, are there any small vans I should consider within my budget? The 130bhp 6 speed 1.9tdi Sport estate suited me before, great MPG, drove amazing and it was awesome for putting bikes in the back and sleeping in when needed. Does anyone on here have leads to a nice vehicle for me? Budget is as cheap as possible but I could stretch to £3k if it meant a nice example that would hold it's value as I would probably be selling it again within a year. I'm thinking something like this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Passat-1-9-TDI-Sport-6-Speed-estate-/131538279655
isitafox
I'm going to go with some kind of aerial booster, or speed camera detector or a light up tax disc holder. Problem solved, it's a GSM aerial booster/tax disc holder for an oldskool hands free kit which means it can be ripped out so ordered some radio removal keys and also a new passenger door lock actuator as it currently only opens via the inside handle. I think I'll need to strip the drivers door down as well and resolder the contacts on the actuator on that side as I think that side is knackered also. Gonna be needing funds for some of the bits I have in mind so it looks like one of my bikes will have to find a new home....
MadManMike
So the lowered suspension I bought isn't actually lowered. It's just standard. It is much stiffer though and no longer makes odd noises, so I'm happy with that (And of course, none of the springs are snapped!) I haven't paid for it yet, so I'm going to ask the guy for some money off, based on the fact it's just standard.

AdamR28
And actually, I checked the level and it was half way between full and empty on the dip stick. That is a bit low really - have it at Max or just above
forteh
That is a bit low really - have it at Max or just above Mazda, redefining the word maximum for hairdressers since 1989
MadManMike
Yeah that's a little odd, I've always taken maximum to mean, well, maximum. I'll top it up a little further then
AdamR28
Just helps to protect the engine at high revs under cornering
forteh
Need more sump baffles? Does it not just burn off the excess or spit it through the breather into the inlet tract? Mike, I thought you sorted your oil woes by replacing the engine breather?
MadManMike
I changed cam cover gasket and cam angle sensor o-ring, I can't actually see any other oil leaks. It does burn through it though as I suspect the stem seals are gone / going.
AdamR28
Need more sump baffles? Does it not just burn off the excess or spit it through the breather into the inlet tract? Ideally yes, but it's quite an 'intrusive' modification as it requires pulling the engine - you can't just drop the sump as the subframe is in the way (and you'd never get the sump to seal if fitting it from the bottom anyway) Never seem to get any excess burned off, we're only talking about an overfill of 150-200ml. forteh
A blocked engine breather will pressurise the rocker cover and/or crankcase and force oil past the stem seals, try with a known good breather (or route a couple of open pipes into a catch can) and see if it alleviates the consumption

Tom Booth
I believe mr Tom Booth is going to be selling his passat once he has the caddy sorted? I am, I'll happily sell the Passat tomorrow. I'd like 3k for it too!

AdamR28
Will do - cheers Taking a few to be flow tested later on, get a matching set sorted out for the race car... They were 230cc when new so we'll see how they come back!
Danny
Does corner weighting help get the car sitting level? Its a PITA trying to get my mini to sit level.
AdamR28
When corner weighted properly the car will definitely not sit level until it's loaded with the driver weight (unless it's a single seater or something), and even then it may not look flat, but it's a performance modification not a cosmetic one anyway
MadManMike
Just fitted a slim sub behind my passenger seat. Sounds awesome. However, now my drivers seat head rest speakers fart. I hate electronics.
Wrayvon
Just fitted a slim sub behind my passenger seat. Sounds awesome. However, now my drivers seat head rest speakers fart. I hate electronics. I feel your pain.... I fitted a new head unit last week, my rear speakers have completely stopped working now. Joy! It was a bit of a faff getting the head unit out too, now I have to do it again to check the wires.... Prawny Baby
Is 1142 for the clio including driver and much fuel?
Haz
My Clio was 1060kg with half a tank and no driver. So I'd suggest that was with some fuel and Dann, as his car has 40kg of seats that mine does not.
Tom Booth
Bit more progress on the caddy.. Installed my 198 mile old discs and pads, new shocks, new arb bushes, new drop links, handbrake cables, new u clamps, exhaust shielding and hangers. Looking a lot better and feels very solid, wheelbase is spot on to factory too which was a nice surprise. Got a working handbrake now but no pedal till TPS bring me new flexis tomorrow. I contemplated installing my lowering shackles but I want to get it straight first so I know it's all good before I mod.
RobinJI
Ebay happened and now I'll be collecting this on Monday/Tuesday. On the one hand: woops, sorry wallet! On the other hand: Yay! a fun car again! I'm really looking forward to a fresh start and oddly, quite looking forward to a slow fun car again, the Scirocco is/was (not sure what to do with it still, it has quite a bit of rust) quick, but you couldn't ever really give it 100% safely. Besides fixing the inevitable issues that come with a 34 year old car, some Gaz Gold's and 15" wheels with sticky tyres will be first on the shopping list once my bank account recovers a little.
