The Car Thread

Didn't think of marking it all up before hand then? :P

I couldn't really mark it up properly, where it mounts is almost impossible to see exactly how much I need to take off.

I did put a rough sharpie mark on it to go up to, but whether that's enough I won't know until I get home.

They've let me borrow the milling tools, so if need be I can take a little more off tonight, neighbours will just have to deal with it :P

Craig. fARB bushes come in a fair few sizes (17-23mm or so from memory) so may be able to size down a tad and be ok. No plastic spacer on my current one so definitely doable - not sure why there are on the one you have!

Yeah there are several different ARBs, think this is the 17mm one as the superpro polybushes that came with it are 19mm. There was only one on this one (off your old golf) as the other had disintergrated. If they're nothing special i'll just epoxy some plastic pipe of the right OD/ID to allow the polybushes to fit until i can get a proper 19mm ARB.

Car should drive completely differently once it's all done, fingers crossed it all goes smoothly and I haven't forgotten something :P

Luke have you done the SAI delete yet?

Surely the bushes themselves will stop the bar from moving L-R just as much as with a plastic shim (at least more than a couple of mm of flex in the bush)?

If the bar's 17mm, should just be able to throw on some 17mm bushes, rather than a 19/21mm bush and a spacer (if I'm understanding coerrectly?)

Edit; Oh and there's no SAI on AMK so not done it on this car, but did to the old LC (AUQ)

Mind. Blown.

The bushes are only for rotation, they don't / aren't designed to prevent shifting sideways. The drop links should help with that but the 'shoulders' are a good idea...

I hope you are in for a rant/read.

The plan was, get handling sorted, add power, LSD

This is what has happened.

Basically the order this last month or so has been:

Buy parts for power upgrades,

tryed to adjust coilovers to raise ride height as it was decked, collar seized and all the plastic clips broke off in the tool,

bought new collars,

removed strut, still wouldn't budge

Get all wheels powder coated,

New tyres,

New brakes,

hit deer,

fixed lights *Yum angel eyes*, fog grill, arch liner

went to get tracking sorted, the front is out of adjustment LH & RH so they cannot be set equally, Rear one has negative camber, the other positive,

bought second hand beam in Worcester with poly bushes

bought top mount bearings and adjustable top mounts to fit with the coil over collars, to fix the front tracking,

vinyl wrapped the front bumper as it was only paint that came off, the wrap was a risk, took a punt, didn't pay off, now the damage is hidden, did a good job, but the sun has killed it and de-laminated it in obvious areas.

purchased second hand LCR body kit, needs some work as I will get the front properly done then get some clear protective wrap like heli-tape, but better visibility through it.

took car to a garage to fit the new rear beam, means I am borrowing their C1 racecar. (its unfathomably slow) it the next step up from having to walk

turns out brake lining is a bit corroded and the hand brake cables needed replacing,

They also had to remove the rARB and had to cut the fixings to do it...

got car back with new beam fitted, rear tracking done!

Now for the fronts, booked in for today to have the hoses, cables and front suspension collar replacing and the adjustable top mounts, Yay front tracking done!

Nope, they couldn't do the work because the front suspension has rock, probably from the deer, maybe from a pot hole, maybe from braking hard, who knows.

They suggested it buy another set or get the currents refurbished, I'm leaning towards buy more and then refurb these and sell them on (or not refurb them if someone wants them cheap)

But they did manage the brake hoses and handbrake cable,

They also managed to identify that the LH ball joint was shot so it probably the root cause of my steering knocking at low speed, big angled turns.

Probably more bullshit to come.

I now have lots of parts that I can't fit because things aren't ready yet and I've already invested now. What was to be a few upgrades and a general service has gotten very expensive very fast! It is also massively frustrating as it is looking worse and worse for TFTD2.

Once it's done, it's done. So I am kind of biting the bullet now, as I know I want this car to be mine for quite some time.

Cheers, Ash

Ash: Major snags man, hideous. Just try and bear in mind that although it's smashed your arse apart financially in the short term, a fair chunk of it (at least in terms of money) is stuff you'd have been doing at some point so it's just forced your hand to get it done sooner. Ping me some info on the suspension shiz - I'll be starting to look for some in a month or two, if it turns out to be an affordable way of speccing mine up then it could be an option.

Mike: Glad to see you got it on man. What happened to the wrap idea?

Wrap is on order. I'm only gonna wrap the top, so I'll do it in-situ.

Could have waited, but that would mean more expensive train journeys.

Good stuff Mike!

I managed to get an hour spare to pull apart my cooling system on the Porsche. Flushing out the engine has not shown any noticeable poop (as expected really), however flushing the radiator has in the form of limescale looking stuff and ome grime, however it is now running nice and clear after flushing in every hole there is. Is there any reason why I can't fill the rad with white vinegar to break down the crud whilst its off the car and then flush it all out? It certainly looks cleaner inside but I'm guessing those little tubes behind the fins will look like heart diseased arteries. Ideally a radiator recore would happen but I can't afford it right now :( The rad looks to be in good condition and I think is fairly new (past 10 or so years) so I'd rather try and get it useable ready for a fresh rad when I have the money.

I also tested the thermostat and the radiator fan switch using a saucepan, some water and a temp gun, both are working fine it seems. I do have a new thermostat coming along with a fresh waterpump as they are cheap enough that I may as well change them whilst everything is apart.

Yeah, still looking for a video of that overtake but it looks like nobody was standing there. I love how clean the overtake was, almost as if it was on a track.

I've always wondered if getting air in a car can be painful upon landing. Anyone have any experience?

i launched my classic mini over a bridge launch ramp in preson a few years back. One of my arches and a spotlight fell off :giggle:

i'll see if i can find the video of it. its more of a buzz than painful :P

Love the new manifold, it's really transformed the sound. The drive to work today was great, in traffic it was nice and quiet, flooring it a bit gives a good sound, then over 3.5 / 4k it comes alive.

Having now sold my old downpipe for £10, that means I got the stainless manifold brand new for £40 - can't grumble at that :D

Next on the list: suspension and rust / paint.
