Haz
I don't know if any of you guys have been following the WEC, but as someone new to it it's pretty cool the level of technology going on in it. To give you an example, the podium at the first round had Audi on top running a diesel-powered 4l V6 turbo, Porsche in second with a petrol-powered 2l V4 turbo and Toyota in third with a petrol-powered 3.4l V8 n/a engine. The thing that draws them all level is the hybrid technology they use which sounds nuts - on the Audi, the engine itself makes 549bhp, with 2 electric motors (one on each axle) making around 200-250bhp each to give it a total of just under 1,000bhp. They all use fairly different systems too so it's not like Formula 1 where it's all fairly prescribed. The first round was the Six Hours of Silverstone and it ended with the top 3 being split by 14secs to give you an idea of how close it is too. Looks like they've got a pretty serious amount of downforce, the Audi is f**king rapid: I'll be watching the full 7 hour coverage on Youtube on Sunday. I love WEC, it literally pisses on F1. I'm also driving the Clio to Le Mans for it's second trip the 24 hours.
SamKidney
Robin - I tend to use 10w50 on very tired engines. Although if it's been run on 5w40/10w40 all its life so far I can't see there being any trouble in continuing to do so if it isn't using an abnormal amount of oil as you've said
RobinJI
Cheers. I'll probably chuck some 10w50 in there and see what happens then. I don't really give a damn about the car but it'd be nice if it doesn't puke it's internals all over a motorway before the MOT runs out. I've generally been having a bit of a break from cars recently, hence why I've been so quiet in here. (Well, that and since moving I spend like 10% of the time I used to on the internet, I actually struggle to keep up with this thread, even thought it's the only forum I still regularly check!). I've been loving having one less thing to worry about, but the sun shining lots has made me itch to get something fun back on the road. The plan's to get the Scirocco back on the road for Bristol Volksfest at the latest which is mid June. In the mean time I want to replace the whole fuel system (well, just clean out the tank.) get some decent coilovers on it, re-weld my seat bases (one of my first attempts at welding hasn't stood the test of time.) and add some bracing underneath. Should be doable if I actually pull my finger out!
MadManMike
Well whatever they did wrong is going to be fixed tomorrow - I'm driving back to the garage at 8:30am and leaving it there until they fix it.
Luke Rainbird
Downpipe and decat acquired. It's currently in Leeds but a friend is collecting it for me. Props to the late Dan Cox for offering to grab it for me too before he was abducted.
HippY
my mum started to use my car again until hers arrive I got into the car after a week not using it, the seat was at the very front, the left mirror was looking at the bottom of the pass-rear tyre, the right was set to look closely to the right side, and there is a child seat at the back. I cannot wait until she gets her car Edited April 25, 2015 by HippY
george_seamons
My LSD equipped gearbox is now fitted and working. Hooooooooly fuuuuuuck!!! It's incredible! It literally just grips and grips and grips. You can actually feel it pulling you round the corner, rather than the inside wheel spinning. Cannot recommend it enough! Anybody with any kind of decent power in a fwd car NEEDS one. I would happily drop 50bhp to keep the grip I have now. Absolutely the best thing I've done to the car for a looooong time!
MartMini
question for Adam/Prawn/the vag gang. i've been thinking recently that part of the reason of having very little grip on the front end is to too much negative camber. Have 18" wheels, low profile tyres (225/40/18) 25mm eibach fARB, lowered on coilovers. sounds like a plausible diagnostics?
george_seamons
More likely the front arb is too big if there is no rear to much. Must under steer like a mofo
MartMini
it understeers and lights the tyres up like a bitch :L if rainbird could pull his finger out and send me that rARB i dont think the handling issues are just down to having a too stiff fARB. with such a stiff fARB and coilovers, i doubt i need that much negative camber, so i think thats the main issue...... george_seamons
Unless you have adjustable top mounts, you won't have that much camber. Lots of camber feels awesome, but it kills tyres. Doubt that's your issue.
greg1040
Well today was quite a productive day with the car. Sorted out a water leak from the rear lights. Totally hadnt noticed but 1 side had no seal at all in it where the water was coming in from. Anywaya i had a new seal in the house i had bought 2 minuite job and it was all fitted and ahould solve the problem. Next i thought i would tackle some of the wiring out as it really was a mess and lying all over the passanger footwell and ecu was just lying there jumping all over the place. And no longer need this Tidied up the doors also ripped all the plastic out and the crappy little speakers that were up beside the mirror. Planned on ripping out the centre heater but it seemed a bit more complex than lossen 2 bolts and it would pull off so left that on at the minuite. Still need to shift my viper box which will clear most the wiring that is visible across the car Then i re fitted my front splitter to the car looks soo much nicer with it back on. Then noticed a wee bit at the bottom of my reg plate which i cant take credit for ha Inside now looks like this. And tyres in the boot which will be going on tomorrow. Think i will have to raise the rear coilovers since there slightly bigger 50 instead of 45 but fronts got plenty of space. Also i think i may look at re routing the intake surly just sucking in hot air wherw its at. Any views on chucking it down this gap i have to get air from the front bumper? And then i picked the misus up and took her for a wee spin round some back roads. She hates the car cause its yellow and loud Edited April 25, 2015 by greg1040
AdamR28
More likely the front arb is too big if there is no rear to much. Must under steer like a mofo Yep, front ARB too stiff. Lots of camber is good for grip, but will wear tyres fast if it's only used on the road. George, I've been in a Civic with a Quaife diff in it, was completely magical compared to the normal FWD frustration. Glad you like it! george_seamons
Honestly can't believe the difference it's made. Can't wait to see how it affects lap times! There were several points at Snetterton where I found the inside wheel loosing grip...hopefully this will be a thing of the past now. AdamR28
Should find it helps every time you apply any power with any steering lock on, given how much power you have!
SamKidney
Greg, you could probably fashion out a suitable intake with what plumbing you have at present. Get it forward in that gap, as you say all its doing is heat soaking
Pete.M
Fitted the "quick steer roll correctors" Ended up with mega toe out (steering wheel was straight) This became a big problem, because I couldn't remove the toe out, or at least not to the extent required. Basically the inner tie rods are too long, and I couldn't fix it today because I couldn't get the outer tie rods to separate from the new roll corrector units! I'll need to buy new tie rod ends and sabotage the old ones to get them off, and shorten the inner tie rods. Luckily I had picked up some wheels with old tyres recently, so I'm using them to avoid wearing the good ones. It actually drives ok with the excessive toe out, more stable than I expected. Despite the toe out I can tell that the roll correctors have made a big improvement, and the quicker steering is awesome. I think I may have fixed the oil leak too. A seal had broken, which must've happened upon installation. Dann27070707070, the injectors you cleaned for me seem to be working very well! Engine seems happy but I need to get the boost control sorted out.
AdamR28
Can't you just cut a bit off the track rods Pete? Unscrew them from the ball joints and get handy with the hacksaw...
Pete.M
Yeah I'll be taking a bit off them. You have a point though, why didn't I realise I could do that without breaking off the outer tie rod ball joint, doh!! Feel very silly now. Jolfa
If they were the right length before, why don't you just flip them and mount them upside down?
Pete.M
Flip the rod ends? There's a taper on the ball joint stud though.
Jolfa
On the joint or the hole it goes into? Common thing to do on excessively lowered VW's anyway
Pete.M
As far as I know both parts have a matching taper, but I'll try and measure the hole out of interest.

Pashley26
Prawn drove my Golf this morning. He said it was teriffying and likened it to having Hiroshima under your right foot. I lol'd. Cannot WAIT to get it mapped on Thursday.
