The Car Thread

It's a well known fact my engine has been on the way out for quite some time.

It now taps whether it's full of oil or not. It's also drinking it quicker than it was.

New exhaust is going on today, but I get the feeling the engine won't last much longer.

So my car went in for the exhaust change. Took them two hours, including drilling lots of bolts out of the f**ked manifold.

They told me they struggled and to bring it back if it didn't seal properly.

3/4 of the way home and boom, there goes the seal on the manifold. It sounds like a f**king tractor.

Annoying because I've wasted loads of time and my car sounds worse than it did before I put the new exhaust on. I know it'll be fixed, but it's still annoying.

I don't know if any of you guys have been following the WEC, but as someone new to it it's pretty cool the level of technology going on in it. To give you an example, the podium at the first round had Audi on top running a diesel-powered 4l V6 turbo, Porsche in second with a petrol-powered 2l V4 turbo and Toyota in third with a petrol-powered 3.4l V8 n/a engine. The thing that draws them all level is the hybrid technology they use which sounds nuts - on the Audi, the engine itself makes 549bhp, with 2 electric motors (one on each axle) making around 200-250bhp each to give it a total of just under 1,000bhp. They all use fairly different systems too so it's not like Formula 1 where it's all fairly prescribed. The first round was the Six Hours of Silverstone and it ended with the top 3 being split by 14secs to give you an idea of how close it is too.

Looks like they've got a pretty serious amount of downforce, the Audi is f**king rapid:

I happened to catch some of the coverage on MotorsTV and there was some pretty good dicing for the lead between Audi and Porsche for a good few laps. I kind of assumed it'd be boring as shit watching cars just breezing around for 6 hours but in the bits I saw there was quite a bit going on. There's a highlights thing here:

That clip of the Audi up there is from a test they did at Monza before the Le Mans 24hr where they ran a 30hr long race simulation and covered 6,500km. Serious business...

Yeah, as long as the bolts are new so shouldn't snap then an MX-5 manifold should be fairly easy.

So since buying it in February my £250 406 has done one track day (well, sprint day) and then last week it went to the Alps and back when my housemates Mazda 6 shat it's big end bearings a week before he had a road-trip there arranged. During this time it's used no noticeable amount of fluids and given me no hassle other than a blown headlight bulb (there was a spare in the glovebox.) I'm pretty happy with that so I thought I'd treat it to an oil change sometime soon (maybe Sunday?)

Anyone got any suggestions of what oil would be a good idea to throw in it? I'm thinking slightly thicker than the book says because it's pretty tired (193k) The book says 5w40 or 10w40. I'm thinking cheep 10w40 but I'm tempted to throw 10w50 in there. Anyone got any thoughs? I've never really had tired engines before.

In other news I've ended up agreeing to do some more co-driving this year, I'd decided not to do it this year for cost/time reasons, but the guy who was meant to be replacing me pulled out and I've stepped in for now to save the mad rush to find someone new. First rally will be TSH stages on the 16th/17th down at RAF Portreath. It was probably the most fun rally we did last year, so I'm actually pretty happy to be doing it, although I'm still hoping Ben can find someone else for the majority of the season as really I'd rather spend the time and money on driving and playing with my own car.

Speaking of which, if all goes to plan I'll be ordering some new suspension and a bunch of fuel system components in the next week or two to get the Scirocco back on the road before long.

Well they struggled with a proper lift, several drills and grinders, so make what you will of that :P

Big breaker bar, 6 point socket, big heave ho. Nuts either come loose or bolts snap, same result either way. I think I said that earlier in this thread actually. No idea how they managed to not make it seal :S
