Muel
This seems like the place to ask, how do you actually buy a car? So far my checklist is: Have insurance quote lined up Arrange with dealer the day before HPI check the day before (can anyone recommend which one to use? Must cover logbook loans) Inspect car/paperwork as per this checklist plus whatever else pops into my head http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/car-buyers-guide/cbg_diyinspection.html Haggle on price Pay the man Sign the logbook Insure it (checked with the insurer that they do instant cover) Tax it (via the automated phone line thing) Drive it away Missed anything? Pashley26
Don't tax it over the phone, tax it online using the new keepers slip. - This Shogun is hilarious. Just took it home, it doesn't fit on my drive. By about 2 foot. So I've parked it in the middle of the high street. The indicators are on the wrong side, arsehole Japanese shit. I've already been offered £1500 more than I paid, probably just move it on.

Muel
Cheers chap, I asked if the cambelt had been changed at 80k which is the service interval, and the dealer says he doesn't have any service history for it, but "drive is good". Do I really give a shit when I'm buying a 10 year old Peugeot with 95k on it? My attitude when buying bikes is that if it's cheap, it's fine so I guess that applies to cars? He's asking £1299 but he's had it a while so maybe he'll take less to get rid of it... Dad is coming along, test drive will tell him a lot more than me given that I've only driven 2 cars and they both felt fine to me.

Skoze
You're all level-headed* sensible* people, I need some advice. Sold the bottom end of the 3.1 Essex I had this weekend for 250, buyer has subsequently offered me 600 for the stage 3 heads and I could probably get another 100 for the mild cam I have to fit. Do I let it all go 'cos i'm poor and that's a 500 pound profit having done nothing but checked diesel down the bores, or do I just fit the heads and cam like I wanted to then bask in the glory of an extra 30-40bhp? AdamR28
Money and run. Use the profit towards a more worthwhile upgrade.
Pashley26
Trucks sold already for a grand profit. I've spent £70 on a full tank of diesel. That's how I rolllll.

Skoze
Money and run. Use the profit towards a more worthwhile upgrade. That is what i'm thinking... Then again, i'm not sure what else i'd do to it? Cam and heads are about all I could realistically do the engine that's in there, suspension and brakes are done (bar going four-pot up front), got some half-decent wheels and tyres on it. It'd be nice to have it with 170/180bhp for a bit more punch, but at the same time i'm really not sure if it's worth doing given it's never really gonna be remotely 'fast'. The cam and heads currently owe me about 200 quid, so could make 500 on top of that easily. Tough one...
AdamR28
You could just buy an MX5 with the £500

Skoze
I could, but i'm not sure my budget could stretch to all the hair care products id need to get with it. If I can fit them without it affecting my premium too much, I think they can stay, if not i'll let them go and do it later on when i'm actually earning money. Trying to explain a camshaft to the chick at Flux is painful. I'm on hold now, 'is that a chip?' NO. Edit; 30 quid extra to cover it up to 170bhp at the wheels, looks like they might be staying. N.Wood
For sake of argument, condition and useage being equal, Octavia VRS TDi from ~'07 with 80k miles or ~2011 with 130k miles?
MadManMike
Assuming cam belt and regular servicing on both, I'd go for the lower mileage one personally. Should be cheaper and in theory should need less work. Cars are shit though, so either could pack up tomorrow... As I found out with that Leon. Maybe should have mentioned the 07 is the previous gen model, newer has a different engine etc.

Boumsong
Fun 2 weeks. Picked the Saab up a little while ago, 21 miles into the journey the big end let go and it fell to bits on the M1. Fast forward to now, new engine in and all seems relatively well. Needs the LCDs sorting and a few little bits here and there. Old engine can be seen in the background. Along with the other project.
