AdamR28
It's allll about the blowtorch
MadManMike
Perhaps wide of the mark... but I've read a blocked PCV (the reddish thing shoved in the top of the rocker cover on the drivers side, that goes to the inlet manifold, been removed in this pic: http://www.mx5unleashed.com/1-pix-mx5/tech/timing-belt/IMG_9877.jpg, here's one: https://www.rspeed.net//v/vspfiles/photos/NA00121150-2T.jpg) can cause oil to be sucked into the inlet manifold and then burn off, meaning blue smoke... Wondering if it might have some water in there which is (or was) freezing it shut, now it's above zero again it works as it's meant to? As I said, might be completely wrong But it's worth an investigate I think:http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=319322 The valve should allow air to flow one way, but not the other (can test it with your mouth). Also, worth doing a compression test? Maybe one with a cold engine, another with a hot engine, and another with 5ml of oil down each bore? Awesome, thanks - I'll check that out too then. Plenty of things to have a look at this coming weekend! PlusGas should work in 2-5 minutes, never had to wait any longer for it to work it's magic. If it doesn't shift after that, then it probably won't move. I'd get a decent blowtorch at the ready too. Yeah I'm just going to spray it on today so that's it's ready to go for the weekend. I found when I changed my brakes that an overnight soak helped get the callipers off. I think one of my mates has got a torch I can borrow if necessary
forteh
A non venting rocker cover would pressurise and force oil down the valve stem seals, with the colder weather frozen condensation in the valve could give the symptoms you're getting. Get it checked

MadManMike
I've been to Paris three times in the last couple of years - the place is FULL of old cars. I'd be amazed if they all disappeared.
Danny
Who would want to go to France anyway?
RobinJI
The funny thing is, I'd be less annoyed by that if they were limiting all traffic movement, rather than just old cars. They're basically saying it's fine to pointlessly drive when other modes of transport are more suitable* as long as you use a modern car, which seems like trying to minimise the impact of a poor transport system, rather than just addressing the route issue that cars are a crap mode of transport in a crowded urban environment. (* I've not been to Paris, but in general whenever I'm in a large city, my car's the last thing I'll look to as a means of getting from A to B, and from everything I've heard about paris, I wouldn't want to drive any car I cared about around there anyway.) Danny
They were on about banning all diesel cars from paris a while ago.
Jolfa
Can't be arsed to quote, it's a PITA on a phone but on the matter of topping up oil - the difference between min and max on a dipstick is 1 litre, which was a complete game changer when someone told me And driving around the Arc De Triomphe is about the most fun thing I ever legally did on a road, it's just a free for all and you just muscle your way through honking your horn all the way, loved it haha! Usually it is yeah, and it's a handy thing to know, except for Mike, because MX-5's actually have '0.6L' stamped on that part of the dip-stick. PS, meant to say, it was good to meet you Mike, sorry I forgot to leave the throttle body with you, the guys I was with left a little without warning (well, or I didn't pick up on it) and I had to just jump in as I was getting a lift with them. Jolfa
Rich, can you shed any light on my potential purchase of a Vr6 Mk2? Always quite fancied one, but the 12v VR6 is a f***ing terrible gutless engine. Other than that, go crazy, some idiot will pay as much or more for it when you get bored! Negotiate hard regardless though, 99% of 80/90's VWs are so wildly overpriced that you can cut the price in half if you rock up with cash There is a skanky looking green one that's actually surprisingly good shape but has too many doors ending on eBay tonight for peanuts I'd be going after if I wasn't leaving the country
Luke Rainbird
The one with the perfect plate for Jardo? Unfortunately it's an undeclared engine swap rather than the real deal so I doubt it's going to float his boat.
Jolfa
Just fill in the engine capacity box on the logbook before you send it off when changing owner, job jobbed!
Luke Rainbird
That won't make it the 100% original factory LHD VR6 that he's after though.

I've only ever driven one Vr6 car, and that was a Passat syncro And it was slow as f**k. I can only hope it's a bit quicker with 400kg's shaved off haha. I was going to start the offer at £2500 if the car is alright, and didn't plan on paying any more than £2700. If I cant get it for that I will just buy the next one that comes up. I think I have found the original advert from when he bought it 5 years ago. There can't be that many two door Capri green VR6's about? I did see that one on eBay, it reminded me of Mr Beans car. It looks a hoot, but not my cup of tea. You not replacing the Audi with anything? I wish I never sold my S3

Pashley26
I think I'm being an idiot, all Mk3 chassis cars are 12v aren't they...
Jolfa
This one is a 2.8 OBD2 engine so I assume it's a 24v? You not replacing the Audi with anything? I wish I never sold my S3 Nope, 2.8 OBD2 is late MK3 (the OBD1 is from early and the 2.9 from Corrados). The 24vs are 3.2's (hence R32) I drove a MK3 Highline with the same engine and it was woeful, all noise no action, like VTec but worse as it drops off at the top The Audi money will be kept safe while I'm away so when I get back to England I'll have £5k to chuck at something, preliminary plans are a 944 daily and either a MK2 Jetta Coupe or MK1 Caddy to put a mental engine in (I'm thinking RS2 again, but rear drive...) we'll see! Meanwhile on the other side of the world the Mrs and I have a fairly decent budget for a car/camper and I've got a Hilux itch to scratch Edit - just to add to my dislike of VR6s, they make less power than my 230,000mile 16v made and are nearly a litre bigger capaicty... Absolute toilet! Edited February 10, 2015 by Jolfa
Pashley26
We all know when I get a VR6 it will be the fastest and most savage car in the world ever. Until I sell it. *apparently* this one has cams in it and is mapped to 230bhp we'll see... - I'm usually fairly good at Google stalking, if my stalking is correct I think this is a picture of it in its hayday. Decisions decision.
CurtisRider
I gave up on the solid panel to go in place of the grille as it just looked wrong, even if it did have some brown vinyl wrap to match the dash. I found a spare grille and got hacking It looks far better now, although I really need to fit red bulbs to the rest of the dash as only a few gauges have them I also investigated the handbrake issue further, modifying the actual lever will be a sod and I don't think too easy either, but I can move the brackets that the lever mounts to about 1.5-2cm outwards which is nearly what I need as the Impreza seats are 5cm wider (but I can mount them as close to the tunnel as possible too to give me a little more give)
