Kevinfor
And on skipping gears, where I live the highest speed limit is 90 kph and I very rarely drive on that road so most of the time Im doing 70 - 80 kph and I prefer doing those kinds of speed in 5th because it uses half as much fuel as in 4th at those speeds. I do use 4th when driving in the town at 50 though.
AdamR28
Yeah, try fresh gearbox oil, some decent stuff, that should help. It may be a worn syncro, or maybe even something misaligned in terms of the shift linkage, if it was gearbox/engine mounts I think it would have the same issue in all gears usually? Danny
But 3rd and 5th don't existing when tootling around surely?
Kevinfor
Yeah from what Ive read, if it was the mounts the shifter would stick in 5th and have the same kind of resistance going back to neutral. Dad has suggested some oil they used to put in every gearbox and it would fix most problems, some kind of miracle oil. If I cant find that, do you have any suggestions on good oils that I should look for? But 3rd and 5th don't existing when tootling around surely? What? Danny
What? What don't you understand?
Pashley26
My argument is that by forcing the gearbox to change it's speed as quickly as incorrectly changing gear does there will be excessive wear on syncromesh gears and end bearings. Skipping from third to fifth and missing out the potentially 1:1 ratio which is critical for smoothness just annoys me. It pisses me off, it's just lazy incompetence and totally unneeded. It's been my pet hate for my entire life as a passenger. As Prawn will testify. We have many arguments about it. My dad says the same, and if he says it he's right. Kevinfor
What don't you understand? What you meant hah. And I dont force it into gear I gently push it untill it just slots in nicely, which my dad says is a good way to do it.
Luke Rainbird
If you're rev matching the engine speed to wheel speed surely it's not putting any additional stress on the synchro. If anything, a single well executed shift will put less wear and tear on the box than two shifts do, unless they are more than twice as perfect
Pashley26
I refuse to argue this with anybody. Missing gears is bad and if you do it you're a lazy nobhead.
Luke Rainbird
Almost as lazy as not explaining why you're so adamantly against something?
AdamR28
it's just lazy incompetence and totally unneeded.I see it as saving wear and tear on the clutch But yeah, just wait longer until the revs drop more, job done. You can shift like this even without the clutch.
MartMini
This is how you properly use a clutch
george_seamons
I have to rev match every down shift or my clutch skwarks because of the friction material. Makes me look like a badass too, obviously
MadManMike
Regardless of gears, I have to avoid 3.5k revs otherwise my heatshields go mad. I really need to get under the car and rip them off.

Wrayvon
I often change from 3rd to 5th or 4th to 6th. Have been known to go 3rd to 6th also. Sorry Jardo
Tom Booth
I never leave 3rd when round town, it'll happily pull off in 3rd and cruise at 30. All the gear I need.
MadManMike
I drop into 2nd around town a fair bit, just because I love the noise it makes My car sucks on fuel in any gear other than 5th @ 60/70mph, so no worries about consuming more in 2nd. Having had a ride in a couple of supercharged 5's, I'm increasingly keen to get one - I always said I wanted this for its simplicity, but the supercharged ones are so much fun it's unreal. Take an amazingly fun car and add more power = win.
Tom Booth
f**k the charger, just drop a v8 in there of somesort. A mate of mine once looked into it. Just a shame it'd weigh a metric f**k tonne.
