Skoze
Stop arguing and check out these valves; Covered in WD40 there so look fairly minging, but they've all been ceramic coated - pretty quirky and something I might keep after cleaning all the old stuff off - anyone had any experience with that before? It's a new one on me. Edited November 9, 2014 by Skoze
Pashley26
Have a look at those valves. You'd get yours a bit bigger if you tried. Edited November 9, 2014 by Pashley26
Skoze
That's quite impressive - what are they from? I could, but these heads are quite keen on cracking...
Pashley26
Nick's Mini. Yeah, I cracked a head on a Mk4 Zephyr once. Couldn't ever get the engine right after.

Skoze
Could be, but it's no colour i've ever seen on valves before (dry anyway, that's wet and covered in ming). It was just something I was told to look out for, as apparently that was a cool thing to do back in the day. It's a pretty interesting idea anyway, and all of that's coming off regardless of what it is. Edited November 9, 2014 by Skoze
Tony Harrison
This V6 sounds like a really interesting project, and sounds like you got a good deal. A few miles from Newhaven I bought an Escort van for £90 in 2002 - the shell was rusted through but it had RST alloys and a CVH that had been re-bored fitted with a Piper cam, flowed head etc. Complete bargain from a mate who needed it off the road asap. The shell I got rid of as it was total scrap, sold the wheels which practically covered the cost of the thing, then stripped the engine down. I bought all the parts I needed (head bolts, gaskets, oil pump bits, the lot), a pair of good condition Weber DCNFs on a manifold, painted the block, then ran out of motivation as I lived too far from my dad's workshop and didn't have a car to put it in. At whatever point I spend any time in the UK I'd like to finish it off. Hopefully it's ok - been under the workbench for a decade now, although I did absolutely cake it all in grease beforehand. Look forward to seeing how your Essex comes along though, I think that's going to be a great project.

Greetings
Probably the last comp at the local track which is the only homologated racetrack in the country. For reasons unknown, management is killing off events. The track is apparently for sale for 60m out of which 1% supposedly goes to the current club manager. This is almost certainly the reason for sale. We used to get amazing competitions, now they are kicking out competitors for loud cars which has never happened before. The special stage is 2x shorter than ever before and incredibly slow and boring. The club does not want to talk to us about what is going on which is very fishy. We're going to get our facts straight and go to the media. The most probable outcome is that the track will be sold and destroyed, so shopping malls can be built there. I'd like to see them try. Anyway, managed to sort out an onboard with telemetry and pedals. Learning left foot braking, still haven't got the hang of it. Finished 4th overall among about 25 Evo's and a total of 120+ drivers. Chuffed with the result considering I was only there for the food after seeing how utterly shite the stage was. Didn't even bother to warm up tyres, listened to music while driving and was completely indifferent about the result. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aw8aaSk1DxM Edited November 10, 2014 by Greetings

Prawny Baby
Sad to hear they're killing it Alex I think they made some of those tyre chicanes far too tight, it's not skill having to stop and go full lock like that, it just kills the flow! Also - what on earth is on your foot Great driving as always man
Azarathal
Nick you may be able to help, do you know anywhere local-ish that does decent geometry? My coilovers are all different heights and I'm sure spring preloads are all wrong too, need geo done ASAP as when I boot it and the weights over the rear axle the wrong end has a wobbly trolly wheel feel. Getting polybush's in the next month to 6weeks so I'd like the coilovers set up properly with geo then go back for geo after the bushes just to stop it driving like a sack of shit. Edit* By local-ish I mean between you and me preferably (Bracknell way). Edited November 11, 2014 by Azarathal
AdamR28
Do the geo all at once dude (after the polybushes have been fitted), or it's just a waste of a geo!
JDâ„¢
While on the subject of geo... I've just ordered a set of coilovers as well as some other bits and bobs. This hunter geometry stuff, is it worth it? The closest one is quite a way from me in comparison to some 'normal' tyre shops that'd do it. AdamR28
Hmm, probably not for general pootling about from A to B, but if you're one of these people who actively enjoys driving, you'll notice the difference As a note, just because a geo has been done on a hunter machine doesn't mean it's any good - the result is only as good as the operator! JDâ„¢
Cool, thanks. I guess if you don't know the garages specifically it's a bit hit and miss then? Still don't really know anyone car oriented round here so I guess I'll just go to the closest one to my office and hope for the best! MadManMike
Finally got all the bits I need, so after a week it's time to rescue the Eunos... BRB, http://www.miata.net/garage/valvecover/

I was going to get the coilovers set properly as a main goal with geo being sorted just to save my tyres, atm the car feels fine to hoon but when cruising it sways about, front wheels pulling left to right and back again continuously so I'd rather sort it before and after. Skoze
Look forward to seeing how your Essex comes along though, I think that's going to be a great project. Cheers mate, didn't realise you were an old Ford guy! Spent the afternoon at unit, started pulling the new one apart; Turns over smoothly enough, no grit in the sump, everything looks to be ok inside... Didn't ave a chance to get the pistons out, but I sort of trust this engine now. Spare Hepolites are selling on the 'bay in half an hour so there'll be no going back! Doesn't look like much, but I promise you it's a honey: Bores aren't in bad shape, no scores, pitting or lips. Bit of ming on this one down to ring level, and two have some surface rust but nothing a hone won't fix: Shells weren't terrible, nor was the crank although we'll wait and see when it comes out - may need a grind, or more than likely i'll make a hybrid bottom end from the two as it needs a flywheel anyway: But most importantly... Check the heads! Little skim, clean up, new stem seals and lap the valves back in - they'll be beauts. Spot the standard head (Jolfa, think you were right on them just being coked up to f**k. Getting them in proper light and having more than a speculative glance over has been handy) 46ishmm inlets, 41mm exhausts vs 41/37 standard heads. Ported, polished, lovely: And my growing collection of dismantled V6s; Not bad. Certainly better than the money I paid might suggest.
