The Car Thread

Bit of an update. From the very first day of owning the car I noticed a few imperfections with the paintwork that have constantly niggled at me. These being:
• both wing mirrors have scuffing on the edges from where the previous owner looks to have tried to fit down a spot they can't make. Along with the offside wing mirror having a crack in it and the nearside having specs in the paint
• offside trims have one scuff on them each as shown!

So I ordered some wing mirrors and side trims and started to spray them up over a week. Given them enough time to harden.
The final finish on them wasn't too great but I knew that i'd be able to get them looking fairly decent with some 2000 wet and dry, the machine polisher and some megs #205 cutting compound. Just a finishing polish as not much cutting would be required!
This was after spraying
I then started flatting them back with the P2000
And removed the old trim off and cleaned behind it (after this pic)
I then put the new trim on and polished it
Much better
Same for the front
This shows a 75/25 shot of it being polished and just flatted back. Difference is unreal
Close up after the polishing, so happy to say it was just done with rattle cans :D
Both trims now on and polished
Wing mirror caps also on too. Same process as the side trims
I then gave her a wash :)
No more scratched trim! Gave it two coats of collinite #915
I then dressed the plastics and the tyres and took a few more pics
So high at the front ughh
My favourite picture I think
I'm nearing the end of my Collinite #915. I've had this for 5 years now haha
Then gave the interior a clean seeing as though I hadn't done it for a few weeks

I need:

A new wheel brush (My halfords one snapped off at the handle)

Wash Mit (my lambswool one didn't like a hot wash and is now babies hand size)

Tar Remover (run out)

Shampoo (replace god awful megs wash and wax i currently have)

Some wax for the winter (i have farecla g3 paste wax but it doesn't seem to last, thinking Collinite #845?)

I'm open to suggestions. I'd rather buy it all from one place.

Cheers mate! How's the hunt for the new car going?

Need to shift the Golf first ideally, which is a pain as I've found an LCR closer to home with a few little niggles that'd be ideal and is cheap as the guy needs the space.

Golf is in for Tesco-repairs Tuesday then need to pull the LCR running gear off for Craig before I can sell. Bah!

If anyone wants a PD150 GT TDI cheap let me know!

Well whenever you want to get the bits sorted dude let me know. Although I will need a hand as I conveniently fecked my ankle again yesterday evening, so won't be the most mobile for the next month or so :(

Away for the weekend else I would mate. If you've not sorted it when I get back tomorrow I'll get the tape measure out.

Just passed a Jurassic Park truck on the AA38 about 10 miles outside Derby. Boumsong?!!

Indeed! I was heading to Cannock.

From the left hand side of the left top mount, to the right hand side of the right is 1190mm. The top mounts I have are 70mm diameter, so I assume that means centre to centre is 1120mm.

Hope that helps!

Legend, thanks for that, that's ideal. Within the range I was hoping for so that's good news :D, time to look into things a bit more seriously.

Now?! :P

Potentially this coming weekend? May be my last in the uk for a few weeks so potential to put that on hold but we'll see. Just want to get the Golf shifted ASAP to make room for more 1.8t goodness.

Saab 9k donated some parts towards the Porsches EFI parts pile :) I've had that Saab 8 years, time I used it for something!

I'm hoping the fuel rail is the right spacing, otherwise I'll go to the ford breaker this week and grab one that is supposed to fit. I can now at least get making/modifying bits whilst I save for an ECU

I wish! Could potentially do this weekend or the next, depends as I may be getting my ankle sorted by a certain Physio this coming weekend. If not i'm definitely game. Although like I said, currently in an air cast and on crutches :( Gimme a call tomorrow evening when you're free after work.

So mild steel us fine? I always thought they were treated in some way so assumed it couldn't be done

Maybe if the car weighs loads and has lots of suspension travel you need something special, but I'm pretty sure mild will be fine. Have bought steel anyway, will do the calculations later

Went drifting again with the intention of it likely being our last session, because we both wanted to stop pouring money into a rusty Ford with dead piston rings. Good thing we had that intention, because my mate hit some surprisingly solid tyres.

On the plus side the rear anti-roll bar we fitted seemed to really help. Massive fun but too expensive to keep doing it. :(

Keep us updated, I know I'm well interested! I can bend tube on my press as I have made adaptors, saves me hunting for overpriced 944 ARBs

My new tyres showed up today, just need to get them fitted and then the wheels on to the car and I should have some decent handling in the wet at last :)

Goodyear EfficientGrip, if anyone is wondering. Pretty much the best tyre I could find for my money, the reviews everywhere are fantastic - they are A rated for wet conditions and C for fuel economy, I couldn't find much else that performs that well. It'll be interesting to see how well they perform compared to the useless Goodyear DuraGrip's I currently run.

Really confused.

When in a higher gear, 4 5 or 6, when accelerating the revs drop at 3k to 2.7k then carries on, guessing it's just clutch slip?

Also, last night after 2 hour drive on motorway my thermostat went from 90 to 50c guessing broken thermostat? Will see if it still does it today.

Clutch slip makes the revs go up, not down

Will be faulty temperature sensor/gauge, not the thermostat.

What makes you say it's not the stat? I'd probably try a new coolant temp sensor first, just because it's a VAG car and they seem to like going, but it could well be the stat, especially if it's been changed for a pattern one at some point.

Stat jamming open would let the engine cool to below normal operating temperature, but no way down to 50 degrees, especially on motorway driving.

You can test the thermostat by taking it out, putting it in boiling water and making sure it opens properly Jake (Y)
