N.Wood
Get the M3 then? Use the left over change to cover the fuel cost difference and smile If they did an m3 estate I'd do it.
Pashley26
There's plenty of them out there converted, and it can all be done with 100% genuine BMW parts. There's quite a few E36's and I've seen a good handful of E46's.
craigjames
Seen a few E39 "M5" estates. They look awesome. Although I think i'd rather have a B5 RS4 Avant...
AdamR28
Raced in a different MX-5 series today, all Mk1s - 35 of them all on the same grid! When the lap time is under 1:30 mins, it gets a bit hectic... Here's a screenshot from my video (which I'll post up later), over half way into the race - still 9 cars in a tight bunch. Absolutely epic fun! (3 in my mirror, me, 5 ahead, and then another which is a little bit further ahead so I didn't count it) Was interesting to see my pace compared with a greater spread of drivers. Wasn't too bad, qualified 10th despite not having a clear lap, probably would have got top 6 with a clear one. Got mugged on every straight in the races though, finished 14th and 19th... Sam - that is balls about your engine. How come it cooked? Was the temp gauge faulty?

AdamR28
Apparently so You can see it on the video, I'll bash it up later. Nah, we think it might be down to tyres. The other guys are on a less grippy tyre (we just dabbled for one race so the organisers let us use whatever tyres we had rather than the control tyre), which meant I could carry more speed in the bends but also seemed to end up with a lower terminal speed at the end of the straight due to more scrub... Still gonna stick the car on a dyno to check though.
Prawny Baby
Are they all 'stock' too Adam? Or are all the cars in the series simiiarly faster than yours? What's their control tyre? Interesting hypothesis. Explains the decent qualifying and not representative race pace.
AdamR28
Erm, they are pretty much the same apart from tastier engines. One guy was on about having a 70 thou head skim (a car that makes 8 more hub bhp than mine has 40 thou off his head!), nuts. They can run on either Hankook Ventus V12 or Kumho KU31 Ecsta Sport. One of the series organisers tested them back to back (same day, same car, same conditions) against Nankang NS2Rs, which is what I was using, and found a higher apex speed of 5-6mph on the Nankangs but a 1-2mph slower terminal speed at the end of the straight! JDâ„¢
Back to this whole arches lark... It turns out that you don't get repair panels for rear arches on the E46, which means that the 'proper' way to go is to get an entire rear quarter panel and swap them over. This is a bit more work than I was hoping, due to it being a structural part. I'm thinking that going to a scrappy and cutting out the arches from a non rusty version is a way to go, does that sound feasible to those who know this sort of stuff? I guess the main part of the question is how cool scrapyards are with people going and cutting out sections of cars rather than taking whole pieces? Also, Adam, I watched the whole of that. Often I skip through bits of your videos because its a decent chunk of time, but that one was really good even though you were 'P-nowhere'. I like the way you really concentrate on exit speed a lot of the time, but can't help but feel you could have done that for the chicane a bit better in the early stages. Your speed though the old hairpin and McLeans is really decent. Quality bit of racing though, and a couple of really good saves! Your speed though the old hairpin and McLeans is really decent. Quality bit of racing though, and a couple of really good saves! It is feasible (it's the same deal on MX-5s), but as you said a lot of work. How 'proper' do you want the repair? Will a bit of 0.6mm steel plate and some careful bashing and fillering do the job? Yeah, the other series is a bit thin on the ground in terms of cars, so this was a whole new ballgame! Chicane - definitely would have liked to carry more speed there, it's tricky though as there were a lot of 'offs' there, usually 2 or 3 abreast on the brakes, plus sometimes it's better to give yourself a bit of space rather than collect a spinner... It was a pretty intense few minutes so I don't actually recall any saves. I did notice in the video an instance of opposite lock mid corner while looking to the side though, it's weird but you have to try and be completely subconscious with your driving while it's so packed out. Yesterday after race 1, for the first time in years, I had the adrenaline shakes - today has been a serious downer... haha.
JDâ„¢
I have a buddy who's very decent at welding, so that bit should be taken care of assuming I can chop out the right bits from a donor scrap car. I'd like it to be 'proper' enough to last at least a couple of years. I'm not planning to keep the car that long, but if other plans fall through then I'll have to, so might as well make sure it'd stay decent for a while. Plenty of umming and ahhing going on! I've not done any real racing, so I'm probably suggesting things that might not have worked, but it felt like there were a couple of times where you went into the braking area for the chicane three abreast where you might have been better braking early, dropping back and getting a real clean line round to have more exit speed for the run down to turn one, especially considering the others would have been compromised still from going in two abreast. Obviously you had the straight line deficit, but I felt like maybe that would have helped. Hope it doesn't sound like I'm trying to pick holes, just enjoy talking through it while I can't afford to do it!
AdamR28
Ah sweet - he's probably done something like that before then? If it's a few year thing and you want it to look decent I'd try and pull a panel off another car I think, else the repair will stick out like a sore thumb to a potential new owner... Yeah, I know what you mean there! It's a balance though. With the extra corner speed my tyres allowed, you'd have to drop back a lot to make that sort of move work (10:10 in the video is a perfect example of how far back I'd have to be to not get baulked at the apex), and then you're into 'another car diving down your inside and f**king you right up' territory, and might not even get past with a slipstream! There will have been a few instances were it was possible though I'm sure, I just got a bit carried away haha.
dann2707
Got a weird one with the car, when coming to slow down say at a junction or traffic lights when I'm wanting to change gear the car throttle blips a little bit when i'm pressing the clutch without me pressing the accelerator. It's really bizzare and wondering if it's linked to that fact that the clutch is on its way out?
Jolfa
Sounds like a vacuum issue, look for anything obvious otherwise spray WD40 around any vac lines/hoses and listen for the engine bogging down That or ISV or equivalent.

Pashley26
I've had a very grumpy week. I've been signed off work, told I can't drive, generally very very ill. Having replaced the alternator last Thursday (the day I came down with death) I have not be able to drive let alone even start the S. This makes me sad. Today I topped myself with drugs and ventured out to the S to tinker. I decided the engine bay being really untidy was annoying me, so I got my little steamer out, sprayed everything down with degreaser, went at it with a light brush and then steamed it all off. Happy with that. Now that George has annoyed me about it I've got another thing to change. Checked her levels, topped up a couple of bits and fired her up. She sounded so happy. http://youtu.be/uhZhLTl-CXI Gave her a couple of minutes to warm up and she was back to her beautiful clattery self. http://youtu.be/zp4YaK7jzMA Aaaah. Bad news regarding my seats. Basically they aren't very good. I bought some knock off Recaro Pole Position seats from eBay, and the quality just isn't there. They were shipped from Athens so I can't return them, so I'll just try and sell them cheap on a forum to somebody I don't know. Which has left me not wanting to be bitten again, so there's a few new options for me to look st in time for Donny. Cleaning the engine bay aggravated me, so I ordered a few new silicone pipes, brake vac line kit, new jubilees and clips, second hand battery box which will clean the bay up no end. So I am happy with that. And my spacers have been dispatched. Good girl.

Pete.M
White filter housing looks kinda strange, but otherwise pretty nice. My engine bay is disgraceful, party because the engine leaks like a sieve, but I don't care because work has begun on the replacement engine. Pashley26
It's atrocious isn't it Danny? Truly shocking. I was planning on satin blacking the whole lot, strut bar, all the securing hardware etc can only cost <£15 in bolts and paint. The off white filter is only there because it's £9 and available at pretty much every motor factors Leaky engines are the best, self rust proofing and self lubricating
