Greetings
Nice car that. By the way, meant to ask but forgot. Does anyone on here have a VW Passat, specifically this chassis? I'm pretty sure I've seen one here recently... I'm kind of inclined to add it to the list of potential cars to buy next year. Doesn't quite go together with the likes of E55's M3's and a 535d's but I'm guessing it should be cheap to run and reliable compared to the rest? Would be looking at the 2.0 diesel with 170bhp and a DKG box. Any opinions? From pictures at least it seems like it's a pretty solid alternative to an E-Class or 5 series? RobinJI
It's Tom Booth who's got a B6 Passat, I've got a B3, which is a damn good car if a bit basic, but that's pretty irrelevant as it shares sod all. Still, they're well built cars. Why not look at B6 A4s? they'd be the logical half way point between the Passat and the merc/BMW alternatives, a Quattro could be better in your winters too, and for towing the M3 places. As for the padding, I couldn't honestly say, in a helmet it wouldn't be too bad, but then do you and any passengers really wear a helmet 100% of the time you're in that car? All it'd take is some idiot t-boning you at a junction and you'd be headbutting a metal bar harder than you'd like. It's a bit of a pet hate of mine, but I guess it may not be terrible as long as you're wearing a helmet all the time.
AdamR28
I guess it's about g forces. They are what damage you, and if you can decrease them with some cheap padding (both with or without a helmet), you might as well in my opinion! Track day tomorrow with Mr Stan Shaw and John the Mong, up early but looking forward to it. Car runs much better now with fresh oil, coolant, water pump and (correctly fitted, unlike the one that came off) cambelt

AdamR28
Take it that was what you're overheating problem was last weekend? Out of interest, how do you fit a waterpump wrong?! I think that was some sort of air lock, but I found the water pump was tapping against the block, and looked to be the original from 22 years ago, so decided to change it The cambelt was the bit that was wrong, at TDC the intake cam tries to rotate itself clockwise, so when you tension the belt the top bit between the cams is all floppy. You have to rotate the crank 1 5/6th turns to find a point where both cams are 'neutral' THEN tension the belt. Random shit nobody cares about, but you never know if it might come in handy eh! Gonna need to borrow a timing light in the morning to get the advancement right again, but the car runs so much smoother now even without that, £120 well spent! Gotta love old cars for cheap spares

Dan6061
Going to a StanceWorks meet in Gaydon today. Starts around 2pm. Anyone on here going/Up for going?
Prawny Baby
Greetings, that's looking great. Miss-matching seats doesn't really bother me, it's far from unusual in racing cars. Get some padding on that cage ASAP though. Miss matching seats REALLY bother me! Obviously it's fine in someone elses car, it's all personal choice, but in my own car, it's an absolute no go, I hate it. Mind you, in my daily drive, I will ALWAYS position the passengers seat so it's exactly the same as the drivers seat in height, fore/aft, and rake. I'm just odd like that. As for the padding, I'd say it is a massive Deal alex. Imagine being smacked around the head with a scaffhold pole whilst wearing your helmet, that's about the same kind of impact as the momentum of your heavy head and helmet getting thrown sideways in an accident, particularly an issue on your cage due to the additional bracing. It is a bloody lovely cage though! Those photoshoot pictures look amazing, can't wait to see the rest!
george_seamons
To be fair, I can't imagine being twatted around the head with a padded scaffold pole is going to hurt much less!
Skoze
Sorry to be breaking up a conversation again, but can anyone recommend me a cheap-as-f**k sat nav? Planning on using one as a speedo in the 80 'cos the gearing's gonna be so far out now. Or has anyone got any better ideas on what i could use? Pashley26
Buy SpeedView Pro on your phone, really good. And only costs £3. Edited August 5, 2012 by Pashley26
Skoze
That does involve getting a new phone... Will check it out though as i'm telephone hunting as well - cheers mate.
RobinJI
Loads of free apps for speedo's on i-phones or anything android, no need to pay for one. If it's just the gearing that's out then it'll always be out by the same amount, so I'd just borrow a sat-nav/phone and make a mental note (or tip-ex mark) of what speed on the speedo equates to the common speed limits. George, the proper roll cage padding's more like the hard foam in a helmet than the pipe-lagging that most people use. If I was to be hit around the head with a scaffold pole, I'd much rather it had this stuff on it, it's like having another helmets worth of impact absorption. I've got a load of it downstairs, I'll get a picture/video of me abusing it to show how tough the stuff is, it's sure as hell not there for comfort, it's still bloody hard to hit your head on getting in/out of the car! In other news, went for a drive in my friend Alan's 1934 Jowett Long 7 saloon yesterday to run in the new engine, one hell of a lot of fun and smiling for 30mph, the thing's got so much character, grabbed a couple of photos along the way:

RobinJI
It's the temperature gauge, sits in the top of the radiator. (The header tank's built into the chrome surround.)

Padding going on first thing Monday, seems it's essential to take part in a competition next weekend... With regard to Passats and alternatives, I just can't seem to find it in me to consider an Audi. I don't know why, that brand just doesn't seem appealing to me at all and I can't understand some of the engineering behind it, like having the engines sitting at the tip of the front bumper for instance. Also dislike the red backlit instruments.
Tony Harrison
My dad's B6 Passat is really nice - he seems happy with it, with the exception of the push-button handbrake. Over in Sweden the other year I saw loads of them around so I'm guessing they're reliable enough in the cold weather.
Prawny Baby
mini update: I came home on THursday between shifts to make a start on the car, which was looking very sorry for itself on the driveway: First off I dropped the bent subframe out: Used the impact gun and loads of extensions to get the driveshaft out, made life SO easy! New subframe stripped down ready to be built up: 034 Solid bushes moved across: R32 / late S3 wishbone on the left, Early S3/TT 30mm wishbone on the right: Close up to show the size of bushes: Have R32 wishbones on there currently, and I'll be building up the 30mm ones with super pro bushes in time It's really odd having no subframe on the car, the engine and brakes and stuff just kind of hang there over nothing. Most odd. My calipers REALLY need a refurb I know, I need to look into brake cooling soon, as my brakes are getting so hot it's discolouring the calipers I lifted the subframe into place, and all the bolts went in perfetly. This really made my day, as that was my last worry, offering a new subframe up and finding the chassis wasn't straight any more to accept the new frame. With the new frame on and everything bolted up, I test fitted the blue bumper I got from Reesy: Everything fitted just fine and lined up, so that's more good news. Back to work for 2 shifts, then home again Friday morning I whipped off the two S3 wheels it was still wearing, to refit the road wheels. Sadly, one of my rear A048's has scrubbed really badly on the trip home, and also overheated like crazy from the rear geo being so far out! Never seen a tyre get this hot before! So, with the tyres swapped over, I set about transfering my lower valance onto Reesys bumper, he did give me a lower valance with it, but there is so much cut out of mine for the FMIC I thought it best to re-use it. Amazingly it survived despite the bumper being smashed to bits. Before I could go and get the tracking done, I needed to get a seat in the car to drive it. I test fitted the new Sebring GT in the car, and my god it's wide! physically it's a much bigger seat than the ones that came out, but it does fit, just! I found that with the ultra low 'pro spec' side mounts Cobra had given us, the seat was too upright on my seat rails. I left it like it was to go for tracking, but it needed sorting. All back together, ready to go off for tracking: On the ramps at Pro Tyre, and everything was spot on. Had the tracking set to 2mm toe out, and the rest checked. Thankfully, the rear alignment checked out nicely, with everything well inside factory specs. Happy days! With the tracking done, I took it for a drive. Feels so nice to be back out in it again, it's driving absolutely perfectly, and everything feels spot on. I couldn't be happier knowing that it's all OK she lives to fight another day! (or barrier?) Looking a bit bruised, but it's back! Started today by looking at my steering wheel closely, I'd noticed that it had a bend on each spoke that I didn't remember before. On inspection, the wheel has bent on all 3 spokes, right through the middle of the biggest hole. Comparing it to my old wheel it's pulled back from the boss by about 10mm, and when you handle it, the top half of the rim has gone REALLY flexy, as if it's fractured inside. Not cool! I was sold this as a genuine wheel, and it was bought by the previous owner as gen, but clearly it's a fake! I checked with Mark at Cobra about modifying the seat side mounts, and he said it wouldn't be a problem to drill another hole in the sidemounts to alter the angle of the seats, so I set about stripping the seats down to get access to the bolt holes, to put a drill bit through and mark the side mounts for a new hole. New hole done, seat angle much better now, and also the extra rake has made it MUCH easier to get into the car also Visibility isn't as good obviously, but these feel SO safe, and are ultra comfy, holding me better than any seat I've ever tried before. very happy with them all in. This evening Dad ordered a 14'' panoramic rear view mirror to help see what's around us, and tomorrow I'm ordering an Apex quick release steering boss and a flat wheel of some sort. Roll on Goodwood next weekend
Pashley26
Every time you say that wheel is a fake it makes my shit itch. If the wheel is a fake why don't you unstitch it and look for a part number. Just because some lard arse forum god off Northloop tells you it's fake doesn't mean it is. And nor does the fact that it bent, ANY steering wheel is going to bend in a 130mph shunt. You didn't think it was a fake when you fitted it to your own car the week I bought it, and nor did you up until some muppet off Nothloop just outright said "that wheel's a fake" after an off focus and out of shot picture of it without even a proper look at it. Prawny Baby
Listen Cuntychops, it's a fake. It's not up for discussion, you didn't buy it. Lou did. We've been through it, and it was £80 on ebay from Poland, about half what a genuine one would cost. I believed at the time it was real, having not seen a genuine OMP one up close. I've now seen a genuine OMP one, and it's totally different. The texture on the alloy, and the size of the stitching is totally different. it is not a genuine OMP wheel. You'll notice I didn't name you in the above post for a reason, I'm not angry with you for selling me a fake wheel at all, you wern't to know, it was a present to you, and Lou wasn't to know either, she thought it was genuine. She got mugged, and the bad fortune is passed down. I'm not angry, I didn't know any better myself at the time. It's a lesson. Just move on from it. Pashley26
I literally couldn't care less about the if's buts and maybe's, but just stop going on about the wheel please. I think it was real, and if it wasn't then I feel embarrassed for selling you something that wasn't what I thought it was. The way you were about that wheel was exactly the way I am about falling out of bed with cars, and you tell me that it's retarded when the shoe's on the other foot. So please stop going on about it, because I just don't want to hear about it and it's embarrassing. I tried to talk to you about it the other day but you didn't Whatsapp me back, and when I rang you I was with people. Also, your mum didn't ring me. But I think I saw her walking through the village anyway, I was going to give her a lift but we had a full car so I just beeped and waved. Next time you talk to her ask her if she got beeped at by three weirdo's in a brown Datsun lol. Oh, and I was a passenger in a Ferrari 599 today. Was pretty awesome, I was waiting to get out of the car show and there was a huge traffic line. It was PISSING down and I was taking a picture of a 599 and the guy offered me a lift back to my friends car; some how I'm not sure that the Ferrari was his by the way he did a donut in it as he pulled away. Also I think I saw the real life child snatcher today - Edited August 5, 2012 by Pashley26
RobinJI
Looking good Nick. I hadn't realised those wishbones were steel, you'd mentioned they were cast to me a few times and I'd always just assumed they'd be aluminium, no idea why. Seats look smart, I know what you mean about having them at a matching position in the daily, I do that too, but in a racing car it doesn't bother me, the seats purpose and the aim from the driving position is somewhat different to in a road car, probably would have bothered me a few years ago when I hadn't spent as much time around motorsport prepared cars, but now I see any passenger seat as an option, let alone a matching one haha. Is it still cool to grab those A3 bits to take jigs of when I'm down at the end of the month?
Greetings
Nick, about brake cooling can't you look into different wheels which will act like a fan? Kind of like the wheels SLR's get.
AdamR28
clearly it's a fake! Yep, that is definitely not a 'big brand' wheel, look at the horrible finish! (I've got a real Mono and a fake Mono - the real one is lovely and smooth, the fake one is just like that.)
