Pashley26
Pretty much. Just don't buy a corsa or a clio, because they're shit regardless of condition.
Muel
Clio? Didn't you used to rate the Clio 172/182 very highly?
Pashley26
I still do. But he won't be able to buy and insure an RS, I assumed that would be taken as a given. The reason they aren't so shit is because they were assembled in the Alpine factory, far far far away from the Renault turd.
Muel
Ahh right, to be honest I only skim read in here, only asked as I fancy a 172 myself one day.
Haz
I really want to buys a shitbox MX5 that I can run into the ground. I don't really expect a response, I just need to have it in writing somewhere so that I can claim it was all part of the plan.

Haz
I don't need anything quicker than the Clio. I just want something to pootle in, MX5 just seems like the cheapest/most fun way to achieve that. I'm aware people will consider me a flagrant homosexual, but it's an itch that needs to be scratched while I am young and reckless.
AndrewEH1
Went for a little drive around England a week ago. Spent way too much on fuel and had to top the oil up half way to York, completely faultless though! Car is now sitting at the local Audi specialist waiting for a major service, new timing belt, replacement of a cracked water pipe, and a few other bits and bobs coming to the total of around £1,500. I should have bought an MX-5 like I was planning to... Edited August 10, 2014 by AndrewEH1
Pashley26
I'd go for a 328 myself, much more fun and just as capable. Some M3 hand me downs, a sticky set of tires. If you put 2k into an MX5 and 2K into a 328 the speed and performance difference would be night and day for your £2000 investment. If you can't drive and you're looking to learn the basics of how to handle a car, (notice I am taking the likes of Adams closed model racing, where it is one of the most accessible forms of close competition motorsport available and is most certainly NOT available for £2000 all in) then yeah I guess a £2000 POS MX5 is probably fantastic. But if you hold a full UK driving license and manage to put your own milk on your cornflakes in the morning without mummy's help then a 328 is by far and away the way to go for "a shitbox you can run into the ground." As far as a barrel of laughs hard as nails B road monster that you could abuse on the track all day an MX5 just wouldn't cut it for me. I'd need the closeness of competition and driver talent variable like Adam has to keep me engaged. I'd get fed up being passed all the time. But yeah, go buy an MX5. Lovely as a good run road car you can pootle about in and have some fun with. I think they're great things to learn the dynamics of driving in, and should see you well from a maintenance and reliability stand point. *the above point is to Hippy not Harry. I know Harry can drive, he's got buckets and everything. Edited August 10, 2014 by Pashley26

Haz
You've thought about it more than I have. I just think I want one, so if I see one on ebay with reasonable T&T in range of me, there's a chance bids will occur... *the above point is to Hippy not Harry. I know Harry can drive, he's got buckets and everything. I only have buckets so my shopping doesn't roll around. Then I bought rear strut brace which does an even better job.
Pashley26
I miss the cargo net in the back of my old one. I haven't really posted anything in here, because I have no pictures or anything to talk about it on here with. Prawn and I went to Goodwood on Sunday, and I go kicked off and black flagged for setting off every single drive by noise meter. But up until that point, the point that I was black flagged for having a car far too noisy...it was good. We took pictures together. I got a lot of passenger laps too, in a 440bhp 135i. It was nice. I spent a lot of time in this lovely lovely thing. Owned by Bon of driftworks fame. Prawn was a proud badger. He was fast and had an incident free day, which makes him a winner. Don't let him say otherwise. I also spent a lot of time in a very very very lovely GT3 Clubsport, the driver of which is a friend who we describe as "next level shit." He's fast. He couldn't gain much on Prawn over three laps after he let him pass though All in all a great day. HippY
I'd go for a 328 myself, much more fun and just as capable. *the above point is to Hippy not Harry. I know Harry can drive, he's got buckets and everything. Well I can do 2 things. My options are if I want to buy a car in september: Golf GTI, Alfa 1.6/2.0, Toyota Celica, BMW E46 318/316ti around a grand. shitloads of miles, but I would not use them that much second option: spare money, something like £2000 and get something decent, as far as I saw the same cars, but less miles, and presumably better conditions Rx-8s start to appear, but I am afraid of the rotarys engine, as If I get one from a guy, who knows nothing about them, I am pretty much fcuked... 328 is much bigger insurance group, I should have a year or two bonus first I am looking a sporty car to basically learn how to drive. I am driving for a while now, but some extra experience would be better, as sadly my second name is not Senna...
Pashley26
I'm not going to lie, and I don't mean to be rude. But I don't really care. Not that I dislike you, or don't have time. And I really really don't mean to be rude. I'm not rude on purpose if it seems that way. But this really is a terrible place to ask for "what moderately sensible first car should I buy that isn't going to be shit and boring." Because we pretty much all drive hugely impractical cars that we wouldn't honestly recommend to anybody we actually liked, but we love them even though they are ungrateful money pits. If you're going to buy something, go buy it. Drive the cars you're interested in, short list them down, find the best one for your budget and enjoy the ride. If you can't afford a 328, go buy a 318. I had a 318is, it was f**king badass. Edited August 10, 2014 by Pashley26

I had a 318is, it was f**king badass. If I want to be reasonable and practical n stuff I would just buy the 1.0 corsa off my parents for small money than insure it for cheap. But it would be something to go have a blast every weekend to work, and to school. I do not want a money pit in a sense that I am not going to buy an rx8, as the engine is really risky. I just have a limited knowledge about cars, and if I google them either there are forums, where people only go there to post about their problems, some fanatic. the 318 is high on the list, as it can be from a carry owner, whereas the GTis were probably beaten. I know nothing about cars, but I see car enthusiast here, and that is the reason why I ask here and probably I should not post after 11pm sober. Pashley26
If you go to look at a 318, put it in fourth, hold the revs at 3500rpm and try to pull away. Just like normal, lift the clutch as though you were pulling away in first. If it slips, clutch is f**ked. If it stalls, it's not been thrashed/has a new clutch. Pashley26
Yup, I paid about £400 for it, drove it for four months and sold it for £1400 with a f**ked clutch. Morea green is cool, I think it suited it.
