The Car Thread

Lies.

Prawn and I have had over 500,000 miles worth of 1.8t's all running 20psi and haven't blown them up.

Muppets with heavy feet who drive turbo cars incorrectly hugely shorten life span...that and poor mapping and hardware.

just a quick question:

From my 2 stroke memories what I learned and heard that every (no matter the fuel, components, strokes) vehicle with an engine must idle a while on cold( less than a minute) then with small gas ( around 2000 rpm, when the car works efficiently, but not in the high power band, varies at cars ofc) going until the water (/oil / the exhaust gas on your 2 stroke scooter) is warm/90 degree... is this the right solution or am I mixing up my teenager scooter "professional" years with everything?

Hippy, yeah, basically avoid high revs when the engine is cold. Doesn't need to be much more complicated than that. If you're a proper anorak you could decide to idle the engine for a while before driving.

Jake, hope you didn't actually take it that way. I'm sure you drove it like any sensible person would, you're just very unlucky.

Can you put a new CHRA in the turbo or has it damaged the housing?

Rebuilt turbos don't just "go pop" unless there is a hardware fault.

If there wasn't a fault somewhere they wouldn't go pop...

Which is why my 145,000 mile old original K04 still works perfectly with 20psi coming out of it. Factory built and balanced.

How many shitty hybrids have I seen over the years with the wrong oil galleries, thrust bearings and seals in them...look at prawns first turbo!

Hybrids are odd, they only produce so much power as a standard unit because that's the safe tolerance of flow and compression for that housing. Asking for more is like putting a 9" dick on a 7 year old. It might have the tools, but it won't know what to so with it for long.

Its worth noting Jake's only had the car a day or two, I very much doubt he's the sole reason he's managed to kill his turbo from such little use.

It was probably an issue that was developing mate, seen it at work more than a few times.

So guy pulled out of selling his evo so still been on the hunt for a car. Been reading up a fair bit about mazda rx7 and i think i can live with the engine needing rebuilt every so often bearing in mind all maby do about 3k a year tops. Seem quite good for the track also which is a winner and rwd which could be fun. From what i gather service plenty keep oil topped up and theres a few mods to keep them that bit more reliable.

Thoughts?

Theres a few on ebay for around the 6k mark which seem in fairly good condition and compression seems good such as

insurance is about 600 also which am more than happy paying :)

Don't buy a Rex if you plan on doing 3k a year, they don't like low mileage at all.

They like to be driven, if it's sat up for weeks at a time it will be a nightmare.

To give you an idea, an old friend of mine who isn't really a friend any more used to do about 50 miles a day in his RX. He had it rebuilt by Rotary Wizard when it was imported, so it was fresh to him.

He has had it two years, not a single issue other than it drinking fuel and oil.

Different friend was so impressed he imported the same car, and had the same rebuild done by the same company. He uses it once or twice a month for a quick blast.

The b*****d thing never works. Always broken down, sensor this, misfire that.

If you want a fast toy to do no miles on buy a motorbike.

Going off for a stag do weekend for a mate tomorrow, and I'm giving a few people a lift. Figured I'd give it a once over before so it was nice and clean. Then this happened...

At least it's beading relatively nicely...

[EDIT] I notice now that you can't even really see that it's a proper downpour. Doh.

I love/loved mine. They like being driven like pashly said, and you can actually see the fuel gauge moving! but what a car :D

You know when something just fits like it grew there? The first drive of my Rex was like that
