Prawny Baby
yup! Happens a lot on cars that are freshly rebuilt too! Very often people trap / kink the vent hose when reinstalling the tank, and on the first few short test drives there is never enough vacuum build up to stop the engine, and by the time you next to go run it it's all balanced itself out, then the first time you take it out for an hour or more, it dies and you think somethings killed it, only to remove the fuel cap with a massive SUCK! Greetings
Sounds bang on, this was the first longish drive considering the car is now registered. Also I had more fuel in the tank so that would probably speed up vacuum build up. Going to try and figure out why this happened, I think someone might have blocked off the vent pipe. Is driving without the fuel filler cap a good idea or not?

It does that on my Civic, I've never known why. It's done it ever since I've owned it (over 2 years ago now, was only 18months old when I go it) - no stalling problems, and apparently it happens to other people. Different fuelling system? Or just that it allows a bit of a vaccuum before the vent opens?
Greetings
I think there's always a small vacuum in the system. Had it in all my cars. However, the suck Prawn was talking about is so massive that it's actually difficult to remove the fuel filler cap.
Prawny Baby
yea, car feels like it's got fuel starvation / run out of fuel, you need two hands on the filler cap, pull like feck, then a massive WOOOOOOOSSSSSHHHHH and it pops off. I'd hate to imagine the load you're putting the fuel pump and associated components under when that happens.# It happened to me on the Mini, but the cause was actually the one way valve freezing up! I used a motorcycle one way valve on the breather line, and the fuel was leaving the tank at such a rate (compared to a bike) that the alloy check valve actually froze solid and had ice all over it on a summers day! Removed the check valve to let it VTA, and all was well ever since.
Jake.
Just started learning to drive, not sure what car to save up for or to use my mums cheap Honda that would just be £800 for me to pay (insurance) and that's it. Ideally after a 5 door car, big enough back (with seats put down) for 2 bikes and is good on fuel cost. I keep thinking of a car like a renault Clio? I don't really want one of those cars chavs like to race around in and blast music from (Perguot 107 I think?). Cheers
Greetings
Ok I'm properly pissed off right now. Last month I bumped into a Fiat Punto, caused a minor scratch on the rear bumper, my car was fine. The Punto was new, the owner was a 2X year old who got really emotional, after exchanging details and a few phone calls she said she wants 120 quid or she's going to do it through the insurance. I decided to do it through the insurance after doing some research which wasn't good enough. Because now I have to pay an extra 70 quid premium on EVERY car I own throughout the next year. That's kind of annoying but the worst thing is that since my dad was the co owner of the car I bumped into the punto, he is also going to have to pay this 70 quid premium. And he's currently insuring 3 cars, like me. So that's 420 quid for a stupid scratch. I've calculated that throughout the last 4 years I've spent about 3 grand on insurance and had no claims (yeah, insurance is pretty cheap over here) and now that I've had a tiny claim they are going to steal an extra 400 quid from me. f**king retards. Tomm
Dunno what insurance is like in Poland, but no one in the UK would EVER claim on their insurance for £120. Uh, hope that helps.
Greetings
Well, I didn't have to wait long to get my revenge. I'm going to milk the insurance for every penny now, starting with a nice rental. Was going through a roundabout and drove straight into the side of a clio which didn't give way. Neither me nor the 20 year old driver of the clio got hurt although the Clio was a complete write off. Airbags didn't go off in my car, impact wasn't too severe from my point of view although it did send the Clio flying quite far. 2 tonne barge for the win. Anyway, to recap - complete front end needs replacing including the bonnet. Mechanically everything seems sound. According to a friend who was passing by on his way home, I should be able to milk the company for enough cash to repaint the whole car. Which is something I've been wanting to do for a while now
Prawny Baby
You went through insurance rather than pay £120? man, that's a strange decision! If I were in that situation here, and the 'victim' gave me the choice of insurance of cash payment, up to about a £1k I'd pay it in cash without even thinking twice. Your insurance record is so important these days, and even one small claim will have you paying a raised premium for the next 4-5 years! That £70 now on each policy, will still be £50 on top of next years, and £30 on top of the year after that etc etc, because now you've had a bump, you're a higher risk. The BMW bump will also put your premium up further I'd imagine I've always viewed insurance as an absolute last resort if you absolutely cannot afford to sort things out otherwise. Greetings
If only I had known I was expecting it to go up but insurance is so cheap over here anyway that after some initial research I thought it wasn't worth doing it otherwise. Insurance for the M3 is 180 quid, 7 is 200. Either way, you pay a fixed extra amount on top of the premium for 1 year when it's a small bump. What I didn't know is that you pay extra for every single car that is owned by whoever is in the registration certificate. Which is absolutely retarded because why should my dad now have to pay extra for his MG when he was sitting at Wimbledon and probably engraving a trophy at the time of the scratch. Lesson learned I guess. I'm going to try and hire an S Class as a replacement for the 7, apparently it's possible, just need to create a big fuss. Apparently running your own business is a big win in this situation.
Tomm
The BMW bump will also put your premium up further I'd imagine Even if the other driver admits liability and their insurance pays up?
Pashley26
I took a picture of the BMW yesterday, nobody else on the internet seems to care so I may as well try here. (eh Prawn lol!) Does it need front fog lights? Edited July 28, 2012 by Pashley26
Prawny Baby
yup, generally, here in gay old England, even if you have a non fault claim on your record, you're classes as being a higher risk, and the premium is adjusted accordingly. So if jonny randomer drives into your parked car, you exchange details, and his insurance co fix it, youre premium will STILL go up, through no fault of your own. It shouldn't work like that, but the truth is it does.
Pashley26
Not to mention that regardless of pretty much any circumstances if you hit somebody from behind it is your fault, which is bollocks.
Prawny Baby
if you don't fit fogs, at least remove the blanking plates dude, they just scream ''Better specced models have something here!'' to me Remove the blanking plates, and suddenly you have 'brake cooling ducts', BecauseRaceCar.
Greetings
I'd go with fogs Does your car have a wiring loom for fog lights? Definitely looks good on those wheels, big improvement. Read up on hiring a rental and I should be able to do it very easily without having to open my wallet. I could even rent an S-Class but I'm not going to because I'd feel like a complete dork driving one. However, I do need a tow hook due to upcoming comps and training sessions + a GPS toll device, which I cannot just transfer from the bimmer. This could be a problem :/
Danny
Someone drove in to the back of me while I was stationary on a straight road on a nice day. My insurance has gone up about 60 quid a year because of it. It's nuts.
george_seamons
So, instead of passengering Tarty at Snetterton, I ended up taking my cupra R out (Would say due to peer pressure, but it didn't take a lot haha ) With absolutely NO track preparation, I have to say, I was mightely impressed; cornered well, was boosting REALLY strongly, and was stopping really well too (until I boiled the fluid after 3 laps, but a re-bleed sorted that). Seemed MUCH better than my Audi was, which is nice, considering the money I've spent haha! Had several people coming up to me saying how nice it sounded, and how well it was going, which was nice Was genuinely surprised at the noise reading though, was only 89dB, thought it was way louder! Friend of mine took pictures, so hopefully will have some up soon.

Pashley26
I don't see this as wrong ? I do, there are plenty of cases of people just throwing the land anchors on as insurance jobs etc.
craigjames
I do, there are plenty of cases of people just throwing the land anchors on as insurance jobs etc. That's fair enough but the insurance/police and generally my view is you should be giving them and yourself enough of a gap that if they do throw on the anchors you have time to stop. Or did you learn nothing in your driving lessons? I'm not condoning people throwing on the anchors for insurance jobs, but if a child ran out in front of a car and had to slam on the anchors to stop and you were too close behind them to stop in time, you could shunt the car and flatten the kid. An extreme situation, but a possibility.
