The Car Thread

Thanks, that's helpful info.

I don't fully grasp the cost element though, mainly because I don't know what LPG costs. For instance, I'm currently paying about 133.7 for diesel and my commute gets me around 40mpg (50-60mpg on the motorway, but that's not often). If I expect to get around 30mpg in the MX5, is it going to work out about the same in actual fuel cost?

Sorry if that's a retarded question, I've been at work all day and my brain isn't working!

She told me the conversion cost £800, but other than that I don't have any details on it. I'm going to give it a little spin tomorrow and see if I like it, then it's time to get advertising the Leon.

Basically just times the mpg by 1.91 for the diesel equivalent. (133.7 / 70.6 (the average cost of LPG at the moment.) So if you managed 28mpg from the Mazda (allowing for a slight drop from the LPG conversion) will cost the equivalent of 53.5mpg.

An £800 conversion's likely to be pretty basic, but it's hard to say really, she might have got lucky.

(PS, if you hadn't noticed, I've done some looking into LPG, I'm keep to get the Scirocco running on it sooner or later. Should give the equivalent of 64mpg on my commute, 70+ on the motorway, whilst still being a quirky old 200bhp/ton car.)

That's kinda what I'm thinking about.

Depending on how much Mike's car needs doing that could be the badger. Would have to be some kind of swap for the cupra though, can't have 2 extra cars sitting on the drive needing selling with an average of 1 day a week to sell them... :P

Purely superficial as I just prefer the looks of the Leon to the Golf. No biggy if nothing comes of it at all.

Well I'm trying to sell mine and I'm not the kinda guy to try and sell it like people do on FB groups. I'd recommend looking over it, find every fault you can. And you will find faults.

I bought the car for £2,000, the turbo went so the guy gave me £200 back. Since then it's had about £1,500 spent on it (Over the last 4 months). I've got it to a half decent standard now, but it's bled me dry. It needs cam belt doing ASAP but I'm out of funds, so my option now is to swap or sell and buy something else that doesn't need anything doing just yet.

I'm disappointed that there was expensive repairs that needed doing, all the cosmetics and minor things were on the list to do, before the turbo blew etc... All the funds I had to tidy it up went on essential things, so it looks just like it did when I got it (Other than a load of polishing and the different wheels!)

You're welcome to come and check it out if you like, no pressure at all.

Haha I could stick a vr6 in and say goodbye to fuel economy. I want a car I'll still be able to do long drives in.

Think I'm looking at a 170bhp engine but in the caddy as it's much lighter it'll be over 200 without a remap.

I don't exactly have a standard engine... Haha. It's a 1.9l diesel from a mk3 golf. 1Y Engine code to be precise, non turbo. Slow as Dan Cox's growth spurt.

How does your insurance company and MOT/VOSA finds the engine swap?

Hu? guessing you're on about power/weight ratio rather than power. 1.9tdis from mk4s only came in up to 150bhp, 170 didn't appear until the 2.0's in mk5s. You won't get over 200bhp/ton from a mk4 TDI engine without a map, but mapped you'd probably be at about 200bhp/ton.

Personally I'd be tempted to go for an earlier, non-PD TDI engine (the 110bhp one). MUCH cheaper to buy (have you looked at the cost of a 150bhp PD engine?) easier/cheaper to fit, more reliable, easier to tune and they'll run on veg/bio all day long. I guess it depends how bothered about the power you are.

All I really want is a turbo diesel engine really, mk4/5 1.9tdi. Will be more powerful than what I've got which is probably 60ish bhp and still feels nippy.

You can get a 170bhp 1.9tdi if you look 52reg seat alhambara's because they're mapped out at the factory to produce more torque and power as it's a bigger car. I guess I'll be happier with anything that's double what I've got. Been looking at r32/vr6's but not sure they're worth it due how much fuel they guzzle, plus I think a turbo diesel done right can be just as good plus way more efficient. Look at what Dan Cox has done to his Seat on here. He's gotten 80mpg and his car is 200bhp...

Also just spent 3 hours fitting A3 seats, just needs a bit of shaving on the sides and it should slot in nicely. Pretty luck if I say so myself.

Tyre advice people...

Last year I put some new budget tyres on the front of my focus ( I don't drive quickly or cover high mileage so tyre performance isn't that critical - never had an issue with budgets), at the mot in January I had new wishbones and track rod ends and the tracking done by the guy who did the work.

The inside shoulder of both tyres are now bald and down to the wires on the off side, I've covered less than 4-5k miles and the rest of the tyre wear would indicate this, probably about 4-5 mm left.

One of the track rod ends was royally buggered ( dangerous apparently) at the mot so some uneven wear can be attributed to that, however I don't know what state the shoulders were in at the time.

Looking at new tyres at around 50ish quid a corner abd I found these:-

http://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?dsco=110&cart_id=67842375.110.15573&sowigan=So&Breite=195&Quer=60&Felge=15&Speed=H&kategorie=&Marke=&ranzahl=4&tyre_for=&x_tyre_for=&rsmFahrzeugart=ALL&search_tool=standard&Label=C-B-70-2&details=Ordern&typ=R-212607

Seems like a good deal, has anyone got any advice or experience or recommendations?

Planning on changing all 4 and getting the tracking done, where's best for tracking, ATS or kwikfit as good as any? Are there any places that will check the alignment before having to shell out the cash to get it set?

Diesel's are a weird one Jake, the TDI in my Landy's about 150bhp and that weighs a tonne - the thing shifts pretty well even with the 31" tyres on it. They just aren't as much fun to drive though. Have you driven any non-slow petrol cars? Capri's not exactly fast, but i'd take it any day over how the landy and any other diesel i've ever driven, well, drives. I find you're just always chasing revs that aren't there when you try and drive hard (that said, my 200tdi's been one of the best in that respect).

Thought about an economical petrol?

Driven my Dads passat '14 no idea what engine but it's a diesel and felt quick, same with a transporter he has now and again for work.

I would absolutely love a VR6 but I'm just not sure it's worth it in the long run...

VR6 question: can you afford to insure it?

I should have taken you out in mine at tartydays mate. You'd definitely want a diesel in your caddy. Also since the new turbo it just pulls right up to the recline, not sure where peak torque is now but it's definitely way higher up and feels like a petrol to drive which is handy as you're wanting to change gear near the red line and it gets there stupidly faster now.

there are enough sharan vr6's that have an lpg conversion to be able to find a cheap one ;)
