MartMini
Anyone know if the center pipe for an astra mk4 estate is the same as the ones for the saloon? The rear box looks longer, so im 80% sure the center pipes are the same.
CurtisRider
Well I got some dye, figured i'd try it on the worst of all the carpets/easiest to remove :$ I mixed it up with 3 litres of water instead of 6 as per recommendation (supposed to leave the item you want dyed to soak in there but obviously I can't do that), only just managed to cover the lot, you can see on the n/s where it isn't quite as well covered as the rest. Next time i'll use 2 sachets instead of one with 3 litres of water, should be a perfect brown then but this should be a nice starting point. Before: After: As you can see from the last photo, the dye starts to even out as it dries off, dark patches are just where its saturated. I used a sponge and brush to apply, I may try a trigger bottle next time and see what difference that makes to application although it's not really that messy a job . I will hose this down once its dry and see what colour run off I get before using it in the cabin
JD™
Just confirm my fears people: Mayonnaise substance in the oil cap, reappears when I wipe it off. Blue smoke on start up. Down on power. Head gasket, right?
CurtisRider
To my knowledge, somebody will correct me if i'm wrong i'm sure... Mayo=headgasket Blue smoke=valve stem seals or piston rings

MartMini
To my knowledge, somebody will correct me if i'm wrong i'm sure... Mayo=headgasket Blue smoke=valve stem seals or piston rings Mayo can also be caused by lots of short jourines. Lots of warming up = condensation mixed with oil = Mayo but yeah, sounds like head gasget. Best way is to have the compression checked
CurtisRider
Ah fair enough, didn't know that one! More dye as I had another pack and I was bored :$ 1.5l of water this time so a far more saturated mix. I decided to try some smaller parts and the car mats that came with the car Second coat on the arched part of the boot cover, noticeable difference Hopefully it'll of dried off a fair bit overnight and we have sunny weather forecast tomorrow I will then give them all a rinse and see what comes off them before proceeding any further

Head gasket, right? See if your coolant hoses to your radiator can be squashed while running. Blown head gasket can often pressurize the cooling system meaning these pipes are pumped solid, one more way to tell.
*gentlydoesit
Only just able to bring myself to talk about it. So I bought the saab.. on the way home the engine blew up and then it caught fire :'(
CurtisRider
Did the owner show a slight inkling of desperation to get rid? That is really unlucky dude
LukasMcNeal
No way? How bad was the fire, salvageable?
*gentlydoesit
The owner seemed genuine and so did his reason for selling it. Of course I tried a haggle but he was having non of it! He's also sent several texts after i told him what happened, asking if I was ok ect. I test drove it for abput 2-3 miles too, aside from a wheel bearing whine it was fine, no knocks, bangs rattles didn't hang about either. I managed to get off the dual carrageway in the most perfect spot... right in front of a huge puddle, so I went straight in and doused most of the fire. The damage was confined to the lower part of the engine bay, hard to tell the full extent untill I get it recovered back to the wprkshop. Deffo a new engine ang turbo required, I was going at a 'moderate' pace when it blew

CurtisRider
Refitted the dyed carpets until next week when we get the A3 and I can use that to go to work then my car can be stripped out and left apaprt until its all dry and ready to be refitted The difference is rather large, although still not quite as good as I had hoped. A second coat should make quite a bit of difference Glove box is out whilst I fix the resistor for the interior fan. I really need to finish sewing my 3 spoke steering wheel and get rid of that ghastly black 4 spoke 911 one...

Danny
Does anyone know of a place to get standard number plates made up but without any kind of company name/logo on the bottom? My old source has moved miles away.
CurtisRider
Loads of eBay folk do them without makers names, although they are technically illegal. There are a few sellers who also do them with teeny little makers names which is a legal alternative

Tom Booth
I thought they had to have the postcode/name of manufacturing to trace them back if there was any discrepancy with the plate, be it font or spacing.
Danny
Yea they do Tom. I think sellers just call them "show plates not for road use" to get round it.

Tom Booth
There's a company on fleabay Danny called show plates, they did my pressed plate and the postcode is in grey on the black outline. Failing that anyone that makes plates will do them if you say there for show purposes
