*gentlydoesit
I've been looking for a good bhp estate for under 1k. I was thinking 9-5 23t, v70r even an st200 (if I could find a good one) is there anything that fits the bill I'm overlooking?
Skoze
Does it need to be proper massive? Scoob probably offers best money/power.
*gentlydoesit
As big as poss really. Scoobys are a bit garish, (not that I wouldn't have one) are good ones hard to find? ideally I'd like a sleeper, so the missus won't notice I bought it for fun instead of practicality
David
Fuel consumption on my LC is starting to get annoying (30MPG over every full tank so far). Wishing I went for a diesel now!
Luke Rainbird
You should buy mine. Since changing the Lambda sensors it's averaged 34mpg over shit roads See also: Need to shift it in the next couple of weeks so if anybody knows someone looking then point them my way! Been a manic 36 hours but having now visited family round the country, picked up the Golf and a few bits for Soph's plus stuck her new bonnet on I'm back on base for another week of grim reality. Lame... With regards to Soph's, massive improvement actually having paint on the bonnet. Before: After: Massive improvement: Next stop; Get some paint on the roof too. Not quite so easy to swap that one though...
Skoze
As big as poss really. Scoobys are a bit garish, (not that I wouldn't have one) are good ones hard to find? ideally I'd like a sleeper, so the missus won't notice I bought it for fun instead of practicality The estates are very understated. We had a '94 WRX imported from Japan and it was an animal with the close-ratio box. Just had a few little tweaks and a subtle Hayward and Scott stainless system - best part was you wouldn't look twice at it. My mum used to drive it to work every day. You'll still find a good one if you look for one, they seem to be at the bottom of their value at the moment so you might even stand to make a few quid if it's for keeps. Ooh, you could look at a Legacy maybe? Big and not slow. Edited May 25, 2014 by Skoze
CurtisRider
Luke just sand it back, treat it then vinyl wrap it. What happened to it!?
Luke Rainbird
Lacquer peel to f**k before we picked it up. I gave it a quick sand down and spray with a few rattle cans when we got the car 12 months ago so as to tidy it up for a few weeks 'til we could get it done right, but in the past few weeks it's started to flake off pretty badly so needs doing (That's the original paint you can see in the gaps, rather than bare metal, obviously) Thought about vinyl, anyone done a DIY job on here? Seems relatively cheap and easy but then there must be the done-at-home horror stories. Surely paint's the better bet?
Tom Booth
Vinyl wrapping that will make it a whole lot worse a lot quicker, there's no good substrate for the vinyls to adhere to so it'll either pull the remaining lacquer apart or lift it off in a sheet making a future repair much more difficult. I'd either diy it Luke or bodyshop it. I can't see them charging the world for a roof. Edit- I've done the odd bit of vinyl for mates, nothing as big as a roof but interior trims and it's not too difficult if you did go down that route. In my experience the checklist to have is; -more time then you think you'll need -heatgun/hair dryer -a pack of good sharp single edge razor blades, you only cut once otherwise it starts looking shabby -some good anti static panel wipe to ensure its clean and free of any nasties that'll let you down -about 50 pairs of hands -plastic filler spreader/squeegee to pul the air pockets about Some people I know that do it daily have to me about some wrapping solution, that you spray on fridge and gives you 30-40 seconds of adjustment. I've never done anything big enough to warrant needing it but it could be useful to get you started on such a big panel.
Prawny Baby
Yesterday was the first Club GTI Curborough Sprint of the year. CGTI usually run 2 days a year, in May and September. This was my first time attending a CGTI Sprint, and my second time at Curborough. AndyP came with me for the day, and we left mine at 06:30. No pictures. it was early! There were 22 cars in attendance, from standard mk2 8v GTI's, to turbo'd mk1's, mk4 track cars, and all sorts in between. I was the only non golf on the whole day! We took a vote in the morning, and decided to run the new figure of 8 layout in the morning, then switch to the old traditional layout in the afternoon to get times comparable to past events. Sadly, it rained LOTS early on, so no pics, and I didn't remember to film any of the morning runs on the new figure of 8 layout. was too busy having fun! It started to dry up a bit later though: A little pic of Gurds amazing mk1 - ABF turbo with a GT28RS. Such an awesome car! And a few pics on track that Andy took: Queing up to head out: There was lots of queing in the pitlane, and moving forward one car at a time. It got a bit tiring jumping in and starting it each time, so we found ourselves a Sam Gunn The day went really well, and I even managed to come home with something for the mantle piece Videos : https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Fh0NoMDjDcY https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=DqdIIOhmxLA Top day out
Prawny Baby
Just got some pics through from Neil Birkitt of Volkswagen Driver magazine - Big thanks to Neil for sending these over - especially so quickly after the event! CurtisRider
My alternators not pumping out the proper voltage and I can't really afford a new one currently. I have a brand new random alternator (not sure what it is for, can't seem to find a reference for the part number on there) sitting in my shed, it measures up as being the same size and it seems as though it'll mount on fine. Is there any reason why I can't use it? It has the same 2 connections as my current one, I don't know the current output but seeing as it's the same physical size I can't imagine the difference is significant? I know the belt line has to be perfect but obviously I'll check that before running it. I also have a faulty starter (won't start after a decent run, heat from the manifold is causing the issue no doubt) presumably the solenoid. I have found another starter in my spares bin and that appears to have an identical solenoid on it, winner! I just need to make a heat shield to prevent the damage occurring again

craigjames
Was just looking at your write up on audi-sport Nick, looking very very quick! In other car related news the big kraut wagon has gone and been replaced by a much nicer A3 1.8T Sport Jardo your K03S thread has already been added to the favorites list.

MadManMike
I want your car, I just need to get mine fixed again and then sell it! Don't hold it for me though, shifting mine could take a while...
Luke Rainbird
Haha, more than welcome to it if you're able to get rid of yours dude. Have put a half-arsed preliminary post in a couple of Facebook groups which seem to be generating a load of likes and a few comments but nothing much yet. Once I've taken my shiny bits off it on Saturday to transplant to the Golf I just need it off the drive ASAP really. Gutted as it's been so good but can't justify it at the mo. Something else silly soon though
J.KYDD
Chaps - in need of a bit of advice. My girlfriend has around £5,000 to spend on a new car to replace her current Mk4 Fiesta. Now I really don't know much about cars at all so is there anything particularly worth looking at, or perhaps more importantly any really worth staying away from? She's got a 15 mile commute Monday-Friday, but doesn't drive all that much outside of that. Needs 5 doors as she see's her niece & nephew pretty regularly So far she has been looking at petrols, around 1.4 or 1.6L. With an eye on economy and insurance she doesn't want to go above that. Decent diesel would be considered I'll be driving this car too a bit, so if there is anything with a bit of poke that's a laugh to drive within that spec that'd be cool too Cheers
Pashley26
You could get a fairly respectable 1.6 Golf for that money, or a polo.
