My weekend...

It's a pretty long video, but the best bits are at Rocket on the first lap of race 1 at 0:50, a very slippery encounter with Matt from 3:58 onwards, race 2 start at 10:13, Rob grass-tracking at 14:34, race 3 start at 17:09, overtaking at 18:37, 19:18 and 20:00, and then a 10 minute position-swapping tussle with Amy from 20:50 til the end of the video, which includes overtakes at 23:23, 25:57, 26:33, 27:34 and 29:10.

Well the time has come

I do not own the car, but I can drive it, we could sort out a Legal insurance for £400, and I am 19 :D (ofc with my dad NCB 6)

1.0 3 cylinder

(it had) 68 horsepower

0-60: 18s

It reminds me of my old 50cc Scooter days, where I was the slowest on the road, no matter how quick I was, I was the slowest

It play Heavy metal rather well, although I must pay attention that I do not go to quick (like 40 mph in city), as somehow I drive quicker with metal

My bike *just* fits in, with rear seats pushed down, and it has a very funny noise, because of the 3 cylinders

Ah, cheers Nick, glad you enjoyed it!

Something that is sort of relevant to your post... I was checking out aero stuff for the Mazda and found this link: http://hanchagroup.wordpress.com/2013/01/29/splitter-or-air-dam-which-design-is-best/

Seems your barge board and splitter combo is going to be pretty effective :)

Good article Adam :) thanks for that!

I spent a fair while researching my splitter before making it, and looked at many others and other DIY attempts.

A big flat faced bumper like number 6 in the pic would be nice, but in the absence of a fancy (pikey looking  ) bumper I'm happy that mine is really quite effective.

I certainly wouldn't want to drive the car on track without it any more!

i guess stuff like that is well and truly outlawed in your series?

No worries, thought you'd find it interesting!

Yeah, yours is kinda like #4 I guess, which isn't much different to 6 anyway... certainly a huge improvement over nothing :)

We are allowed a small splitter but not many use them and nobody seems to have done any testing / maths behind it. I fitted one for the last round and found a pretty amazing difference... The photo below shows speed traces from a track day with the car having exactly the same setup, and the qualifying session after having fitted the splitter and undertray. The blue and yellow lines are the track day, the pink and red are the quali session (picked a quali session as there was no slipstreaming to throw off the readings):

post-5427-0-57765300-1398857704_thumb.jp

The numbers at the top of the vertical line are the speeds in mph, so above ~85mph it really makes a difference!

The time saved is nearly 0.3s just on the main back straight at Anglesey, and more importantly the extra speed gained gives a much better chance of sticking in the slipstream of - and passing - the cars with, er, slightly more power than is allowed. Pretty chuffed with that!

Are you still in southampton Dave? if so, I'll come and pick it up

really need to get some black tape on there.

i need to remake the damn, but I'm reluctant to do so until I've got the inlets for some additional brake cooling ducts I want to add!

Adam: that data is awesome, so glad you've found similar to me, and backing it up with numbers is brilliant.

Do you have any pics of the splitter you fitted?

I think you should put brake ducts on the front of it like a SAAB 900 Enduro. Big rectangular ones.

I plan to fit these into my air dam, one on each side feeding some back plates I'm going to make up shortly.

Splitter

I can't actually see it on my phone screen at all, so it must be pretty small!

Are you allowed anything like mine? home made plywood tat of win?

That's what she said.

That's a really interesting article Adam, cheers for that! It backs up what I've always read/been taught, which is great timing considering I'll be wanting to tackle making one soon. A friend's just done pretty much exactly #4 for his dissertation (BEng in motorsport engineering if I remember right) and I'll be trying out something pretty close to #6 soon just for fun, starting with this bumper and some plywood:

DSC_0183.jpg

The bumper comes straight down from the forward tip. I suspect the figures wouldn't be quite as impressive as in that test because of the intakes in it which aren't taken into account in that study (and I believe can have quite a large effect on front end aero), but it'll hopefully still give some drastic improvements over the overbite they have as standard. Over time I'll be hoping to sort the full underside out.

Seam welded & poly bushed (to replace the cheap shit that was fitted!) wishbones

Aaaaand a battery kill switch - because something is draining the battery over night and Im sick of looking for the culprit race car :D

Just got out of the Ford after two days driving it.

Jumped into the Audi, pumped my seat up because it felt "too low" and put it straight in second and stalled it.

Got to the end of my dads drive and locked the wheels up braking too hard.

Got half way home and reached forward to twist the wipers on and turned the radio on.

Got home and leant across to the passengers door to lock it.

So different!

It's looking so much better for a light polish and wax.

Mot today, I reckon it's going to fail on tyres amongst other things. I'd rather splash out and get a second hand set of alloys and tyres rather than spend money getting tyres for my dopey steelies.

So does anyone know of a nice set of wheels in 5x112 fitment roughly 17-18" that would suit my van that I could search for? Ideally something not too expensive. :)

Are there any limitations when it comes to mods? Watching that video I get the impression you could greatly benefit from a shorter final drive, then again it sounds like the cars you're competing against have the same ratio so guessing it's not allowed to be changed.

Very relaxed driving style by the way although you do seem to be getting more aggressive towards the end. Any chance of getting a GPS logger so one can see the speed and roughly what the g-forces are? What tyres are you running?

Luke should swap his Leon for my Leon. Because my Leon isn't at all a pain in the arse.

This post, annoyingly, has got me looking at Leon Cupra/FR tdis. Shame yours is so royally screwed or it may have been an option, Mike!

Swap my brakes, doors, bumpers, interior etc over and we're in business. Simple enough?! :P
