A-series engined MG metro would be a good shout.

What about a fiesta Zetec S? slightly too good? they're cheap, great chassis, lovely little engine, bit over your powe requirements though.

i knwo exactly what you're looking for though, makes lots of sense. I thrash the living shit out of my 95bhp tdci fiesta, it's slow as hell, but handles great, and is actually really fun to drive.

A3 just scares the shit out of me if i try to drive it fast anywhere other than a race track.

Adam, I'll add Fiat Cinquecentos, Skoda Favorit/Felicia, Suzuki Swifts, Subaru Justies and Toyota Starlets. Don't forget Clio's either! 4x100 and great fun.

Mk2 Polos come up cheap still, and they're insanely simple and easy to work on, the engines love to be revved (the 1.3's square, and the 1.05's the same bore so hugely under square!) and they don't weigh in at much over 700kg. I'd feel a little bad killing one though.

Ooo second for Subaru Justy, girlfriend used to have one and it was loads of fun in the snow, and reasonably powerful compared to other similar sized engined cars :)

Old ones are cooler, but the the 90s ones are easier to come by, they're just 4wd Swifts

Yes yes yes, these are all the sort of tragic cars I was trying to think of but couldn't - nice one!

Mk2 Polo sounds interesting as well... Thanks.

It's worth considering 205's and AX's too. Have you seen the video of the 1.4 diesel AX doing a 9:55 around the ring? Looks like a lot of fun! 205's are lighter than 106's once stripped down to the basics you need, especially the smaller engined ones some of which have an all alloy engine.

I think if it's something you want to have fun in but actually keep going, then for what you want you'll struggle to have more fun than in a late 80s hatch. I completely get the small want for something basic, light and small engined to thrash knowing it's not breaking the bank.

Personally I think the top of my list would be the little Fiats (Cinquecento and Seicento), a mk2 Polo or a basic 205.

If you just want to thrash it then scrap it, then something like a 106 will be hard to beat for cheapness and lack of guilt putting it over the bridge!

My little polo 6n2 is so much fun to drive and It's only a 1.4 8valve with... 65bhp! I've got it lowered on KW coil overs and it is so good through corners. Had a few little chases off my friends in similar cars with bigger engines and it just grips where their cars don't :) Cheap to get and plenty of them about!

I'm seriously tempted by a saxo VTS, they can be made to handle very well with very little outlay. And they go quite well for a little car. Back when I lived with mother, my best mate had one and it was like a go kart that did 110mph. So much fun
