Considering the stuff we see come into our place thats half decent Jake! I'd considering seam sealing it, and if thats a hole where the welder has burnt through cover that. Then look up Shutz. Its a wax oil to prevent any rust reoccurring again

No way!! Was my Dads first time welding haha I simply held the metal to it on a stick while cringing. ;(

We used a mig welder (metal comes through the end of a rod?) but kept playing up so used a welder with a stick on the end that went down with use if that makes sense? Was too strong so burnt holes but did the job.

Will get it cleaned up soon I hope, shall I just clean it up then spray it/filler and take to mot?

Cheers :)

Jake, yeah, filler and paint would be fine for the MOT. The main thing's that it's structurally solid. In an ideal world there wouldn't be those holes in it, but then I've seen garages do a lot worse, at least there's a couple of holes blown, rather than weld that's not actually stuck properly all the way around.

You will need to be fairly aggressive in removing the rust that's reappeared though if you want any chance of it lasting, don't leave any darkened/pitted metal behind, make sure it's all sanded/ground off to a nice uniform shiny surface. before you go ahead with the filler.

I may have just got home from buying a new toy... No pics yet because it's dark.

This is why flashes exist. Go on.....

Speaking of buying toys, I've pretty much decided that I am going to buy back my old MX-5, pending going to have a look at it and double check I'm happy with it. Sadly the soonest I'll be able to buy it will be the end of February, and I probably won't be able to put it on the road until the end of march at the soonest.

What happened to it in order for it to be a Cat C? Depending on how old the vehicle was at the time of the accident Cat C can be pretty nasty damage.

Like you have found out some insurance companies won't cover a previously written off vehicle so whenever you get quotes always contact the company and make sure they know about the Cat C. The cheap quotes you are getting online are all well and good but they will be useless if you have to make a claim and they then check records and find out about the write off and decide they won't cover you!

Not entirely sure what the Cat C damage was, but I know it involved the front passenger wing / arch. It's all been repaired fine now though.

I've been declaring that it was Cat C, so no worries :)

I love that. More than I love your m3!

Cracking car. You driven it yet?

Only around the house. The engine needs tuning, it's running very badly now. It's got SU carbs and my dad is absolutely brilliant with them so that's not going to be a problem. He couldn't do it before the journey due to lack of tools. Lots of mishaps on the way, the carbs came loose, air filters started falling off and oil started leaking from the rocker cover, covering the engine bay in a thin film of oil. The car has a new engine and someone probably didn't torque the bolts right.

I hated one thing during the short ~300m drive - the accelerator pedal is not level with the brake and clutch, it's much deeper in. So when I wanted to go from the throttle onto the brake my foot slid under the pedal and not onto it :P Will look into it, my dad isn't bothered but it's worth checking.

First thing tomorrow I'm jacking it up and checking whether it has an LSD.

I got talked into it by ladyfriend, who let me dip into the wedding fund to stop me whinging. Far better economics to just cut the losses with the 5 for now. I'm probably still going to keep it for a bit though...

£2200, which I think is pretty damn good for a car that's got no advisories and FSH :)

Noice. Sweet work, Hayley ;)

Absolutely, although now I've gotta refill that fund pronto!

Haha, wasn't expecting you to actually go and buy it.

Fair one!

I don't like the bus, and someone else was going to pick it up at 8pm so I got there at 6:30pm. He must be a bit pissed off...
