TROYston
You'll have no problems rolling the front, the rear can be done too but with a bit more effort and care using a standard arch roller. The upshot is that you have limited possibilities on the rear so if you want some wide wheels you'll need to stiffen up the suspension since you cannot pull the arches sufficiently for wide/small et wheels to clear them with the standard suspension travel. Hope that makes sense. I've rolled rear arches on 3 E36's and was never happy with the result which is why my current E36 has front arches off an E46 installed on the rear.. Is that a 328i? If so I'd stick with 205/55R16, should be ok to drift at above 60mph. If not, just use a lower profile or a shorter diff. Nah its the baby 2.5 323i I'm not overly fussed about the state of the roll as its going to be a daily drift slag, do long as don't damage paint doing it I'm happy! I understand about the spring stiffness, my rears are cut springs so need to find sorter stiffer ones for the coilycups I'd only drift on skinny waste wheels max of 205/50-65. The wheels going on are banded t5 steels 9j fronts with 11j rears but might play it safe for tyres and arch and go for 10j? What spring ratio would you recommend? Jake.
Been driving a 2013 Renault Clio about. I really really really don't like it. Way prefer how my 20 year old pick up drives. Is this normal?

Greetings
Nah its the baby 2.5 323i I'm not overly fussed about the state of the roll as its going to be a daily drift slag, do long as don't damage paint doing it I'm happy! To be honest the widest wheels I've ever used were 9.5" and I managed to get 260 section slicks onto them so not sure why you'd want 11j? Unless you want them for appearance. Can't help with spring ratios, sorry. I don't even know what spring rates I have currently, would recommend them though. On a different note, just came back from a long ride with a friend. We covered around 100 miles there and back to get to an epic wood with some of the best roads I've seen in my life. The roads have a loose surface, are mostly smooth, completely empty and there are lots of corners with changes of elevation. The surface is a bright colour so visibility is very good. After about 20 minutes in the woods I noticed the front wheels were no longer where they used to be. Probably tore a bush to shreds but it's not that obvious yet. There was easily an inch of play each way. Going to order some Powerflex bushes because this is silly. The current ones lasted about 200 miles and they're original BMW parts. Still managed to continue so long as the surface wasn't too bumpy. Anyway, in terms of "illegal" motorsport this is the most fun I've had in my life. Even wondering whether not to sell the Daihatsu because this is so much better. Incidentally, this is the Subaru I posted about last week when it's owner decided to carry on driving despite an open bonnet during a night competition. Ended up with quite a lot of damage because he drove straight into some obstacles. It's getting almost as tatty as his old M3. Got some onboards which I'll edit and upload tomorrow, surprisingly the visibility is pretty good. george_seamons
Fitted H&R rear anti roll bar, first impressions are - it feels amazing, the car just feels so planted now! Can't wait to really put it to the test though. I have a 28mm bar on the rear of mine. SO awesome. Set on the hardest setting...did very nearly bin it when I first went round a roundabout though haha! Coupled with a 23mm front bar, camber/caster correction top mounts, polybushes on every joint, and coilovers, it handles like an absolute machine! Can't wait to get back out on track once it's been mapped to run the hybrid!
AdamR28
I can imagine that will feel pretty 'darty'! Maybe not optimum grip but fun at least

george_seamons
Yeah, it's pretty stiff to be fair, and as you say it's quite darty and snappy. Can catch you out if you're not on the ball. Great fun though!

Luke Rainbird
I've got a standard LCR 19mm front ARB, Whiteline 24mm rear on the rear at second stiffest setting and it feels spot on at the mo. Might want to tweak that if the power goes up and I'm using it in anger a little more but for what I'm using the car for it feels great. Holds the road really nicely when you're giving it some stick in the twisties and certainly hasn't lost any noticable grip (that's not to say it has/hasn't) but when you do give it a little much it reacts in a really controlled, predictable way which is nice
CurtisRider
Reading all this keeps reminding me that I need to buy upgraded ARBs....stop making me want to spend my money! Talking of money, what do you guys spend on your cars per month in repairs/upgrades? I have been spending an average of £250 per month (mainly repairs/refurbishing), this is too much according to my girlfriend but I don't see the issue. george_seamons
Depends which month you're talking about Towards the end of last year I was spending about £700 a month, lol! Normally it's between £100-300, depending on what I'm doing. I'm at the point now where my only spending (other than fuel) is tyres and servicing. What would she prefer; you spend the money getting the car you have to a standard you want and enjoy doing it or having a few nights out and a cheap hooker every month? I'm pretty sure i know which one she'd prefer you do!
Azarathal
My answer to "you spend too much on this or that" Is so what? It's my money and I'm not in debt so I'll buy what I want
CurtisRider
Well this is the first full time job I have had in 5 years...so my bank account ain't so fruitful although my overdraft is almost paid off so apart from my student loan i'm debt free! I think the main issue is that I own too many cars (my daily Porsche, 2 Saabs, mini, camper and pickup), I should probably sell a few. I guess she is used to owning a car that requires nothing spent on it apart from tyres, servicing, MOT and tax. George I am talking overall average, otherwise i'd be similar to you currently due to several expensive bits. I'm hoping the cost of maintaining my car will reduce quite significantly soon as I have nearly replaced everything that typically goes wrong on these/a 30 year old car in general. Craig can't I do both options?
Pashley26
Yesterday I looked at two Cooper S's. A 54 plate JCW at £5495, and a 52 plate standard S at 3. There is £2500, two years and 7000 miles between the two. I can get £5200 for my A3 trade. Do I spend £2500 on the extra perfcormance, and desirability. And being two years newer. Or do I pocket the £2500, and buy buckets, 17" pulley, injectors, intercooler and a set of wheels and tires then do a track day. Or do I save the £2500 and buy a Cooper S AND a Mk2 Golf/MX5. craigjames
I reckon you could do both, like you said get rid of a few of the cars and she should have no complaints..... But if it's not causing any problems financially then it's only a problem to her. You'll just have to explain the joys of buying an older car and the money pits they become. CurtisRider
She has been fairly understanding, and the camper purchase is actually her fault as she found it for me! I think it's the lack of saving for a house/funding a wedding that bothers her (not that I have proposed yet...)
AdamR28
I don't keep track of what I spend... which I think is a good idea. I keep all the receipts though...
Luke Rainbird
If the idea is to save for a deposit then don't go spending it all instead. If you're bored of diesel chugging and want something a bit more of a toy buy something cheap (£1000-2000) and spend a little on bringing it to a level you'll have fun in, whilst pocketing the rest to buy a place. Oh, and I'm with Adam on the not keeping track front. I've not done much recently though in fairness other than general wear/service parts. Other than maybe popping on a set of 256mm rear brakes I think that'll be me done for a while 'til after the summer when I can start looking in to upping the power. Skoze
I'm another on the Tarty wagon, i don't keep track of what I spend but I just make sure i've always got enough to do the other stuff i need to do like paying rent and keeping the missus happy, but i guess that's pretty standard Gonna have a cheap term now and let m bank balance recover. I don't absolutely need to buy anything for a while, so just gonna save for the wheels and V8 while keeping an eye out for a couple of handy conversion parts.
Little Yoshi
Have a chance to buy a MG TF Sunstorm for cheapish. Anyone have any experience with these cars? Will only be using it as a auto-test car and maybe a blast at the weekends.
N.Wood
Anyone used Pirelli Scorpion ATR tyres off road? Any good 17" all terrain / off road tyres that arn't huge in height?
Pashley26
Goodyear vector 4 seasons. Used them shit loads on 500L Trekking and 4x4 Fiat Panda. They are really good and the road noise isn't too bad either. Edited January 3, 2014 by Pashley26
