The Car Thread

Returned from the award ceremony. Was an epic evening, after the prize giving we returned to our hotel, got properly pissed and decided to buy the chairman of the club a thank you gift for the brilliant season he prepared for us. Most of us went to a bowling/dance club we were invited to and a few went off to get the present. I remember dancing with my mates when my friend appeared in the door holding an absolutely massive box which turned out to be an at least 3ft tall vodka bottle with a carrier and accessories. We all signed our names on the bottle and gave it to the chairman. He was absolutely chuffed. I don't remember much more but I do remember that I accidentally threw the bowling ball backwards and not forwards. Nobody got hurt.

So this is what I got, was one of 2 people who managed a podium finish in 3 classes. The red one which looks weird after compressing the image is AB Cup which includes BMW Challenge but also the WRC class which is mostly Evos, STD's and so on. The trophies have my name engraved on them (not visible with a flash for some reason) and all the rounds with the date and place they were held at. I absolutely love them, such a great reminder of this season.

There has also been a lot of talk about the 2014 season and while most if it is going to be similar to 2013, they want one round to be held during a Czech rally. So there's a big chance that this time next year I'll have experienced the real deal. Scared and super excited at the same time.

Where the hell is the VW scirocco manufactured?! What continent?!

Trying to register on scirocco.net and it's one of the anti bot questions and it won't let me onnnnn. Portugal doesn't work

Which Scirocco? Mk1/2 were mostly made by Kahman in West Germany, with a few in VW's Wolfsburg plant (Also west Germany). Not sure about the mk3, but I'd guess either Germany, Spain or Mexico.

Edit, wikipedia says the Mk3 is made in Portugal, but if it's asking for the continent then that'd be Europe surely?

I could easily get 2 stocks in the back of my hatchback mondeo with the wheels on and 3 with the front wheels out, with just the big seat folded down. And easily enough room for 3 blokes and all the riding gear as well

Not really a fan of Mondeos until the mk4 estates, but they're more money than I want to spend.

B3 Passat?

You know I love them, but they're all pretty aged and bloody expensive for what you get. Plus I want something with a few more toys and a bit more comfort. Not to mention the 'been there, done that' factor.

The only real reason I wouldn't want a VAG car is because I've been involved with them for ages and I fancy trying something new. I may well still end up with one, but I see no point in discussing/suggesting them, as I'm well aware of them.

Pete, what did it fail on? Shame you're not local, I've got a couple of friends around Bristol with good stashes of Volvo parts.

Greetings, those do look like really cool trophies, nice one.

That would be convenient, but the parts I need are fairly small really. It's the welding that sucks!

Here's the failures then:

Offside front position lamp not working (little sidelight thing which I didn't notice because a much larger light beside it is always on)

Nearside registration lamp not working (I knew that but didn't fix it because the car was so likely to fail anyway)

Nearside rear shock absorber insecure (That's an odd one, I think the bolts are all tight but the shock mounting tube thing is not quite big enough)

Nearside rear suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded (Basically a jack managed to mash the rear sill/jacking point area so needs welding)

Battery insecure (Very annoying because I have put straps around it and there's no way it can move)

Both front brake rubber hoses excessively deteriorated.

Anti-lock braking system warning lamp not illuminating (Because I removed the lamp like a true pikey. Again, I haven't been able to tackle this yet)

Nearside rear parking brake recorded little or no effort. (Knew about this too, I'm not sure its the pads though, it might be the loose bracket where the cable splits that's causing an issue)

when you say new S3, are we talking about the latest 8V S3?

Not the 265bhp 2.0 tfsi that comes in the 8P S3 and mk5/6 golf R I assume?

Yeh the 8v atb have software update that raises the power and torque a fair margin.i was a bit shocked at the 365bhp have no idea on turbo ect the car is using though

The G3 EA888 turbo is insane, along with a different injector position. Which gives two rails, and two sets of injectors. One direct and one below the valves.

The 8P only got the Gen1 EA888 engine range, which were great but still heavily flawed.

As I am lead to believe the Golf will only come equipped with a K03 and the Audis will come with a larger K04, so the same as the old Mk5/6 platforms.

The Gen3 EA888 is being really well guarded, I have hardly seen any solid fact on them. Other than APR's imagined tuning figures.

Enjoy this read, it is by far and away the best EA888 technical data sheet available.

Why not get a car with a decent engine?

I had a 318, and despite what I said at the time it was shit and I should have bought a 328.

The mr2 isn't that powerful either yet both will see a huge increase on my current car and as long as they aren't sluggish it'll be fine.

I can see myself more in the e30 in a few years due to a few more seats and could always drop a different lump in down the line. Nice examples are much much more expensive than the mr2 though

Hybrid is on :)

Lots of like for that!

Just popped to my old work and one of the guys has a H plate Eunos Roadster (MX-5) for sale, looked tidy enough and he's going to chuck a fresh MOT on it. He's after £600 and said anyone's welcome to view it (Including sticking it on the 4 post ramp) whenever. Located in East Devon near Honiton.

Also, that reminds me, my Dad's T4 is for sale. It's a green panel van, with rear windows fitted as well as 2 seats in the back. It's a 52 plate 2.5tdi on about 57k, generally tidy if a little basic inside (although it does have cruise control.) Includes a recently fitted tow-bar and a nearly new roof-rack. Think he's after 4.5k if I remember right.

In other news, the heart seems to be ruling the head in terms of what to buy as a next daily, so I'd love to hear anyone's opinions on Alfa 156 sportwagons. I just kind of fancy something a bit out of the ordinary, with a little style to it, rather than just another car.

would you get the alfa in the 2.5 JTD? the 5 pot sounds lovely!

Yeah, 2.4 JTD flavour more than likely. It'd depend on what I could find a good example of at the time though. Not sure it's the best idea, but I'm bored of the sensible German choices, and I've always loved the look of these.
