The Car Thread

Eurgh, wild goose chase and all that. After fannying about with my fuel pump, checking wires, sorting out hoses, refitting the bracket as it had fallen off, etc my car decided it still didn't want to keep running. I checked the pump with a multimeter, no volts. Checked the fuse and found this:

So that has presumably been my issue all along... although it's great that I have found what the issue was, it does concern me that it has happened... it's the correct fuse yet the plastic has melted and not the fuse itself. Is this down to a poor quality fuse? Can't really see how there was enough heat there to melt it, yet not make the fuse go?

Yeah, I know those bullet type fuses give a few issues in old Volvo's too. I think they just don't age very well, plus I'm pretty sure they were originally ceramic not plastic, it's just that modern reproduction ones are cheap plastic. My 240's fuel pump one gave out on one of the end caps too, along with the indicators and one or 2 others. They were all old/original looking though, and once replaced with fresh ones seemed absolutely fine. They're also prone to having hair-line cracks on the element part, so they don't look obviously blown, but will intermittently/permanently refuse to work, which is what my indicator one did.

Ah cheers for that Robin! I shall get some new ceramic ones ordered and replace the lot, for the price i'd rather have the peace of mind. Have you had any experience with the cheapo fuel pumps on ebay? I'm tempted to buy one as a spare to keep in my car to go along with the spare fuel pump relay i have just bought

Went to a comp and won my class, took 4th place overall. Really fun day, the conditions were awful and therefore much more interesting. Also drove around in a 318is E30 with this years' Polish rally champion and it was a mental experience. Half way through the course I was thinking "no, I can't drive like this, it's impossible". He was taking lines I would never think of and would frequently use left foot braking which I finally understood the point of. It kills understeer while slowing you down so a really nice trick when you go into a corner too quickly.

The Megane RS driver who keeps beating me has bought a pro rally spec M3 so it was fun to see how he compared to other M3 drivers. Needless to say he did brilliantly for his first comp in a RWD car coming 2nd. Can't wait to see his vids, the car is equipped with Reiger suspension, fascinated how it behaves on the bumpy bits.

Will update with some pics and vids later on, used Racechrono throughout the event.

Found a puddle in the caddy... Spent half an hour trying to figure out where it came from, turned out it dripped along the areal cable! Surprised the previous owner never told me about this/fixed it.

You going to silicone seal that Jake?

Possibly, I'm gonna see how well this works first haha.

Probably worth putting a grommet in it (and the hole next to it with the taped up wire in it.) Keep the water out and save any issues with chaffing through the insulation.

Yeah that's true, dunno how the previous owner didn't get any leaks though! I must be very unlucky.

I've recently done a few things to the front of the car including new wishbones and bushes, new springs and a new shock absorber.

After fitting the new shocks and springs i'm getting a stupidly annoying knocking sound at speeds over 25mph from the o/s

I'm wondering if i've mashed up the wheel bearing when fitting the new shocker, I may have had to give the assembly a few hits from the persuader to locate the shocker properly. The noise is loud!

I've had the car on axles stands and removed the tyres and also the brake calipers to rule them out but it still persists. Heres a vid, the car is a mk4 Ibiza tdi sport.

Cheers!

Won a car on eBay on behalf of a friend, it's a black 3 door A3 1.8t (180bhp) quattro, I'll be picking it up on Weds, no pics til then so a damn boring post (maybe Jardo will appreciate)

I would add though, this is the friends first car!

Bit sketchy on the details so far, but it't the 150bhp FR with a few mods to get it up to 200... Still waiting for details but it's a friend selling it to me for a measly £2k because it needs some love.

Bodywork isn't great and the interior needs tidying up. Both things I don't care about that much when I get that kinda power - stuff I'm happy to gradually tidy up too :)

Managed to get an insurance quote that's cheaper than my 1.9 TDi 90bhp!
