Luke Rainbird
Yeah quite possibly. I think the way it might well go is that next time someone's looking to buy some Mk4 coilovers I'll sell mine for £100 or so and buy a new set of LCR JOMs/similar. Got a set of hubs to go on but they're the bolt-style version rather than the ones held on by a nut (like mine). Denied! Was hoping that given they're off the same year car they'd be compatible but it wasn't to be. Would almost be annoyed if I hadn't managed to get them thrown in with the brembos. In related news: If anyone is after a front subframe/steering rack/arb/hubs or the previously mentioned coilovers (6 months old) for a mk4 chassis car then let me know! Mark W
Gone and got the tracking done? I'd be amazed if everything was still pointing in the right direction after that impact, and you could be that lucky... Seems you're due some after the past couple of days! Yeah, it's having the tracking done now. Steering at 10 o'clock to go in a straight line and 'fruity' cornering. The brakes seem to be really shit as well, but that could just be 'cos I've been driving a different car the past day or two which has insanely sharp brakes. Find out in 10mins. Basically, got to get to Loughborough tomorrow by 10am. If my car's dead then I have to get a train at 15:40 today. Tick, tock, tick, tock... AdamR28
Hmm. Hopefully it tracks up ok - that is quite a long way out so hopefully nothing too badly bent... If it needs any parts and you can get it here, happy to help sort it.
Mark W
Just got back now. Got there 20mins after I dropped it off, and had to wait around a bit 'cos he'd gone shopping (as you do). He came back and said the front right was miles out, and he'd got that sorted. Now it kinda feels like the wheel needs to be at 1 o'clock-ish to go straight, but that could be because they hired an army of cowboys to build the roads here so they're all massively on the piss. Anyway, gave the nice man £20 and I'm going to try and fire out that journey up tonight so if it shits the bed I can get it towed tonight, but still (somehow?!) try and get there tomorrow. Garages around here have done alright out of me the past few days - £120 in total, all in cash, generally all for very little work... EDIT: Oh yeah - the odometer display panel bit on my dashboard now lights up properly too. Seemingly smacking all manner of f**ks out of my car jolted everything into place. Every cloud...
Duncy H
Got insured on my new van last night. Aviva did me a flipping amazing deal on van insurance. I had to ring them up and confirm cause it was that good. Picked it up today and easily done about 80 mile comfortably. It's an 04 vito 109 Cdi with just 100k and a rear tailgate with warrenty from a dealer. Bodywork is clean but it's not been painted well. (Might be me having a keen eye cause I used to do bodywork) Plans are, carpet/ insulate rear, polish it up, maybe a remap later on and do something about the wheels. With the wheels anyone got any opinions or thoughts? Tempted to just paint them (black perhaps?) and not sure wether to do it properly or just hammertime them or something lol. Sorry it's not a car but there is no van thread
Boumsong
Those who are into detailing/polishing. I'ev just started sanding back my last coat of lacquer. Started at 1200 then 1500, then 2000. I'm now onto 2500 grit wetting and sanding. After that, what would be the next best step? Its lacquer over black and it all looks a little grey at the minute. Whats the best way to get finish super shiney? Normally I just leave everything as the raw painted finish which 98% of the time looks good enough. Wasnt possible on this particular occasion. Dan6061
Mark - Alignment could still be out as the rear wheels took a whack too by the sounds of things! Best bet is to call into a garage that has a Hunter Alignment system that can check all 4 wheels, and the camber/castor angles too. Sounds like they've just re-aligned the front wheels assuming that the rear wheels are still straight/squared up! Which is why the steering wheel is still off to one side when you drive straight. As bad as most of them are, a majority of Kwik-Fit depot's have the Hunters, and will do a free check for you with no obligation to get the work done. It is pretty pricey to get it all aligned by them, but it will go in a straight line again! Oh, and the chassis looks fine to be honest, mine is MUCH more battered than that! RobinJI
Yeah, as Dan says, get it all checked for alignment, not just 'tracking'. You don't necessarily need loads of fancy kit, a basic laser alignment set-up like most garrages have for tracking and a camber/caster guage will do the job perfectly if the person knows what they're doing, and they tend to be much cheaper too as they're not charging extra to pay off the bill for the huge machine, the trouble's finding somewhere competent with the oldschool kit. Without knowing your area then Dan's plan of somewhere with the kit to make it easy/obvious to the guys working the machines will be the best bet. Although Adam might well know somewhere. Speaking of things in the road doing damage to cars, my sump's taken one hell of a battering from a rock about the size of half a concrete block that was lying in the middle of the road on my way to work. the rear center of my sump's now about 1" higher than the rest of the previously flat bottom. It's not leaking and the oil pressure's fine, but it means I'll have to sort a new one before the next oil change, as the sump-plugs no where near the lowest point anymore, and looks far from healthy its self (it's now a 5 sided bolt, whoops.) Ah well, I needed to make baffled one sometime anyway. Anyone got a spare steel sump from a mk1/2/3 golf or b3/4 Passat? (any 1.5 or bigger petrol besides VR6 or any diesel would do.) AdamR28
Yeah, sounds like a full alignment check is in order Mark. Happy to sort it next time you're passing, just give me a shout so I can make a free evening
t-comp-kierz
Had anyone had any experience with JOM coilovers? Are they any good or am I better off getting eibach lowering springs? It's for a mk4 Golf if that makes a difference.
Luke Rainbird
I've had a set on for the past 6 months and they've been great. Not too harsh but a little firmer than standard, just as I was after.I'm actually looking to sell them though as I need an LCR setup with strut-mounted ARB. If you're looking at buying some you could have mine for cheaps?Halfway down this page: next time someone's looking to buy some Mk4 coilovers I'll sell mine for £100 or so and buy a new set of LCR JOMs/similar.In related news: If anyone is after a front subframe/steering rack/arb/hubs or the previously mentioned coilovers (6 months old) for a mk4 chassis car then let me know! MadManMike
Likewise I've been rolling on JOM's for about 6 or so months, they seem fine
Pashley26
I just accidentally Prawn's old hybrid turbo... Ahh. So despite asking him how much he wanted for the setup for MONTHS, he has gone and sold it to you. #whatacunt - I've had JOM's for 4 years and 30k. Perfect. Which is why I told the guys above to buy them. Edited September 26, 2013 by Pashley26

You'll need a cutting compound now Allen, depending on the area you'll either apply by hand or buffer. Farecla g3 or presta super cut compound are leading the way at the minute (g3 has been the forerunner for 20+ years). On black thou I doubt you'll remove all the cutting lines from buffing so you will probably need something like presta swirl remover, it's just a very fine compound designed to remove smaller surface problems. There's plenty more products out there but they are the best and silicon free bodyshop friendly products.
george_seamons
I presume he sold to me because I gave him the money instantly, and he knew I wouldn't piss about. Not saying you would have, but I guess I was an easier option. I've also been badgering him ever since he got it to let me know when he got rid. Also, my car is cooler, so blates the better person to give it to P.S. Buy my turbo...£200. BARGAIN!!!

Pashley26
I'm going to fit rods next, then who knows. I never really liked Nicks hybrid, don't know why. Hopefully it will continue to serve you well, it's a fairly legendary unit. Alfa sold for asking price, being picked up today.
george_seamons
I must admit, I wasn't a huge fan of the way it delivered power in Nick's...it was too much like an NA car for my liking. A blindingly quick NA car nonetheless, but I would rather a more punchy delivery. As we both know though, thats more down to the mapping than the turbo. Yay for rods though, thats a good plan. I love the peace of mind I've had since fitting mine. I can drive how I want, and not be crossing my fingers all the time!

Sam T
Can anybody shred some light on headlight tinting? (oh the irony..) I've tinted my front lights with a light vinyl, and it now looks like this: I asked the MOT testers at the garage i work in and they said as long as it still emits a white light and the beam pattern is correct then they have no reason to fail them on. The 8k HID's that are in there were a bit bluey' without the tints but they're now a much purer white so thats fine. Has anybody had any problems with the police? If they illegal ill have to buy the Fly eye stuff but i thought id try this first as a cheap alternative. Cheers! Edit: Sorry for the really grainy photo!
