The Car Thread

Shit yeah, my bad - it's a mk2 on an E reg, wrote that in a bit of a hurry earlier! Has the 4+e box which is interesting to know about the ratios, cheers. The car belongs to a mate of mine and i do know some history of it, from what i remember it was stripped, resprayed and rebuilt around 4 years a go and was solid from what i can remember. Nice little thing, think it's a 1.3 lowered a little on some ATS Classics (probably reps but you get the general idea)

It's a car for my sister, i'd quite like her to have it 'cos it'll be doing several people a favour and she was always after an early Golf, so could be a nice compromise. Glad to hear maintenance is easy, that's just what i'm after for her. Will go have a drive of it/ look it over properly tomorrow - if there's one thing i know it's rust :P

Cheers!

Cool, yeah, they're an ideal little runaround. Oh, another common issue's carb icing, where the carbs freeze up on humid days from the rush of air cooling them. It's almost always caused by the warm air feed for the intake being out of place, or the vacuum operated flap thingy for it being buggered. Either way, although it can be a tad annoying it's simple, easy and cheap. (like everything else about them!) An E plate one will have hydraulic lifters and electronic ignition, which makes them a little more maintenance free. I'd say definitely go for it, but then I've always had a huge soft spot for them, they're very basic, but then I like that.

That's everything i've wanted to hear, really! Will teach her enough to get by and hopefully she'll then be able to look after it herself. It's currently decked out in the back as a van with some mad speakers in either side, however all the rear seats and brackets etc are still with it and can be put back in easy, think i've got some serious give and take to do here and could potentially get it for a very nice price.

Bought one once for £50, mate ran it round for a few weeks, leaked oil like a sieve and the brakes barely worked. Polished it and sold it for £300 :)

All this talk of breadvans has got me itching for a project again, it'd make a great base for a mid engined sleeper, and I could cobble it together in a relatively short time I reckon...

I'm itching to get stuck into a project soon too. I've even got what I want to do all planned out in my head, just need a better job so I can get on with it! The Mini's getting put on the long term back bench, and I want to do something more sensibly achievable in the mean time (and as much as anything, something more aimed at fun than outright performance like the Mini is.)

So, saving for the mr2 and thought whilst I still have my c(sh)ity Rover i'd learn basic maintenance on this. Firstly, the handling is very sporadic and changes between starting and restarting (popping to the shops etc). One moment the steering is light, snappy and feels good to drive, the next time I start it pulls, vibrates the wheel, heavy steering and bumps have actually taken the wheel out my hands.

I've checked power steering fluid levels, had tracking/camber/balancing done by 3 individual garages and now I'm lost. Any help?

If I am honest I love these brakes as they are, and as such will be buying the highest performance pads and discs I can. Already I have had some great experiences with them, well worth the use of handbrake late at night and cleaning.

The braking power is immense.

:)

This morning was a good morning.

Up early, which made me grumpy because I need a lay in.

Wheels were minging, after four days and 20 miles.

So I used the "blind test" product, a PH balanced wheel cleaner designed to protect any waxes and protect products on the wheels.

Hope it works!

It really really does! Best wheel cleaner I have ever used!

So I rinsed and washed the car, two buckets obviously and Hubiwash.*

Then used Sonax Xtreme detailed to bring it back up.*

Trims and recesses cleaned with 3:1 diluted Auto Finesse APC.

Then waxed with Angel Wax Desirable...which is outstanding!

Then glazed with AMD RaceGlaze, which spreads so well and comes off with no fuss.

Cleaned the glass with Gtechniq perfect glass.*

Blacked the plastics with Megs endurance and hoovered the inside and dressed the plastics with the Sonax detailer.

It looks good. :)*

And a cheeky edit.

Dull update I know.

Indeed. That's the 'other' MX-5 race series, not the one I'm in luckily! He'll have been doing at least 75-80 when he hit the wall there (we raced at that circuit earlier this year).

Driver of the orange car got 4 points on his license and is now banned from that series.

World's most pointless product test? You'd have had exactly the same finish using pure water and a sponge after four days and 20 miles. Nothing engrained, nothing more than surface dust...

I actually now have an inherent dislike of A3's purely down to this thread. If I never saw another one in my life I'd be only too happy. A3 drivers also seem to be some of the worst which is kind of odd. [/grumpy]

Judging people by their car is your choice. I did it for years, which is why everyone hates me.

It is a light PH balanced cleaner designed for regular use to keep wheels fresh without harming previously applied products. Which is great for somebody like me who cleans their car two or three times a week.

Water wouldn't have done the same job.

I would never let anything get "engrained" in my wheels, because I take pride in my car. Nor would I use a sponge on my wheels. I sprayed the cleaner on, left it whilst I had a smoke and rinsed off.

Don't be grumpy, it makes me sad.
