Danny
Thats pretty epic for such a small engine. What did it get with the old tubby? and how much of it was 'bolt on'?
Greetings
I was just looking for a spare Daihatsu for the winter and found this in the search results: Is it just me, or is this the ugliest car ever made? It's just some car. It's even more shocking when you think that someone had to design this thing, someone else had to sign it off and at the very end, someone had to take pictures of it to be used in brochures and advertising. And at no stage did anyone think "you know what, this isn't very good looking, perhaps we should have done something differently". I understand the difference between good looks and just ordinary looks which are meant not to offend the buyer, but this is something else. Greetings
Ok fair point, but both those cars are styled in some way. Whether the result is good or bad is a different matter

bing
This: http://youtube.com/watch?v=3MDTcXGsjuo Quite a few of the motoring fraternity/journalists reckon the F40 is the greatest Ferrari ever made up until the 458. That was a good watch, I do like to see a good driver wringing the neck of a proper analogue super car. The only car that's come close to being as good the last few years was the pagani zonda. But even they've gone all electronic with the new thing
Skoze
That Ferrari vid is fantastic, really nice to see a car getting the treatment it deserves. Mad to think how the F40 must have seemed back then! In me news, i'm scared of my tyres in the wet and need to change them asap. It also turns out the big boss man of Burton Power is one of the regulars at work - small (convenient) world.
bing
So loads of go faster goodys for the Essex for you then dude. Webers, cams, head work, failing that supercharge it
Skoze
Have been looking into supercharging it actually, certainly would be different! Still looks like the Cosworth is most likely, but i do wanna get a mad Essex back in it one day.
CurtisRider
The next area I wanted to paint on the Porsche was the front badge panel and headlamp covers. Many stone chips, some badly filled in and some rusting away have made it look rather grotty upfront. I had a chance to sand down, treat and primer the panels. They still need a little work but aren't far off being ready! Can't wait to have it looking rust free Just need to sand/fill a few more areas where some little dents have shown up, then paint on tomorrow. Greetings
Comp over, this time it was at our local track. I was treating it recreationally yet managed to come 1st in my class and 4th overall, just 2,5s behind 3rd place. All cars in the top 3 were Evos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YR6kTi84BE Used Yokohama Advan slicks this time, still not as good as Dunlops but was rather pleased. They have a sort of strange understeery feel on the limit, I think the rubber is too soft. And since they were 610's rather than the usual 640's I had an epic time with the gears. Definitely going to go back from 4.27 to 4.45 for the next season. It makes short shifting so much more worthwhile and there's more entertainment with the gears. Going to change the gearbox next week, it's had enough. I'm also running new front disc which were incredibly cheap (couldn't get hold of anything else) and Ferodo DS3000 pads. I must say that the pads are insane, the brake works like a switch and when you touch the pedal, it's like hitting a wall. I'm going to install these on the rear too although it's probably worth checking what pads will work best with the temperatures I'm getting. After the run my front discs are near 510C and rears are around 200C. I'm sure the car can brake even better because engine braking seems to help slow it down which suggests the rear pads are shite. Martin Reynolds
Bit of Saturday work to my car: Car on axle stands, famaliar sight! Straightning up one of the gearbox linkages after bending it changing the gearbox last weekend. The gearlever now sits straight! Old and new gearbox mount! Thats the second standard mount ive destroyed. New mount in place, looking shiny!
CurtisRider
I thought you were getting rid of that car? How are the poly mounts on the engine? Noticed much difference?
Martin Reynolds
I thought you were getting rid of that car? How are the poly mounts on the engine? Noticed much difference? its got 11 months MOT on it, might as well run it into the ground. The gearbox went last weekend, didnt cost me a penny to replace as my old man owes me money Definatly looking into replacing it when the MOT runs out. theres ALOT of difference with the polymount. Changing gear, even harshly, you cant feel any engine movement. That with a new clutch makes shifting lovely. The only downside, and its a big downside is the vibrations when idling. The whole car shakes to bits. Im hoping that the bush will bed in and soften a bit, its bad
CurtisRider
Surely if he owed you money then it did cost you something? I think one of my mounts has gone, but it seems there aren't poly mounts available
Martin Reynolds
Well i didnt have to pull any cash out of my pocket, so it didnt feel as bad box was £100, clutch was £40, so you cant really complain at £140 overall!
Pete.M
I think one of my mounts has gone, but it seems there aren't poly mounts available Gearbox or engine? I think my engine mounts are dead too, but I'm personally staying well clear of poly engine mounts, they sound so unpleasant.
CurtisRider
Engine, they have a spring inside that commonly snaps, I'm wondering if I can make something up that's a bit better, it only needs to last til the summer!
george_seamons
Polybush mounts are awesome once they bed in. You just have to put up with vibrations for the first few hundred miles.
dann2707
If your flywheel is going, would it show signs once the engine has warmed up? I'm gettting a big rattling but not when the engine is cold, its fine then but after a run its making such a racket that sounds just like the flywheel. Engine is PD130 I thought it would have done it from cold too or does the rubber inbetween the plates warm up and loosen the plates? Thanks! RobinJI
Poly engine mounts will vary a lot depending on make and the mount design. I've been in a few mk4 golf platform cars with them and thought they were perfectly pleasant, but on my Scirocco they're bloody horrid! I fitted them because my old ones were shagged, and new OEM ones were a pain in the arse to get (main dealer said not a chance, online specialists said silly money/not in stock, GSF/ECP/other autofactors couldn't get all of them.) Plus I bought a poly-bush kit that had everything for the car, so I thought they'd be worth a shot. They really are evil, there's way more noise getting in from the mounts than anything else, the exhaust sounds quiet in comparison and the exhaust's not exactly subtle! (2.5" system with a single 'straight through' backbox.) Plus they haven't even killed all the engine movement, from the sound of them you'd think it'd be mounted completely solidly, but you still get some lash-back from them, I think their natural frequency is just wrong. If you do go with poly-mounts on engine mounts, I'd definitely go with decent name-brand ones that you know will have had research and testing put into them to avoid this! I'm picking up the 4th and final OEM quality/spec mount to replace them all with new rubber ones tomorrow, ended up with a mix of second hand but new and GSF 'Premium' ones. I'll be seeing how it drives with standard mounts (not exactly a standard engine) and if they're too soft I'll have to get creative, as decent brand poly ones don't seem to exist for mk1 Golf chassis stuff, maybe try filling the voids with polyurethane or I might just re-mount the engine in a better way. I repainted my badges yesterday, no photos yet though. They've not come out as well as I'd have liked, but they're still much better than before. They'd been painted black, and I'd then painted over the lettering with silver years ago, which was rubbing off and looked crap. I sanded them back a little then sprayed them with LOADS of white paint, then a light coat of black, and sanded through the black on the high-spots to bring the lettering out white. It seems to have worked well, but all the thickness of paint made some of the definition of the shape get lost, so it's not as crisp as I'd have liked. I'm glad I went with white though, it's much more in keeping with the cars current look than the original silver. Also, while hunting in the shed for white paint I found a can of Alpine white that I remembered being a really good colour match to my car, so yesterday I went around treating all the paint chips on the car with anti-rust stuff, then today I went around with a tiny paint-brush and touched them in with the right colour paint. They're still very much there if you're looking really close, but it's hugely tidied up the general look of the car! I know it's a far from ideal way of sorting it, but then it's better than nothing, and I really can't afford the cost or time without a car of doing it all properly. I'm at an event tomorrow where I know people will have posh cameras, so hopefully I'll have a few photos to show you guys over the next few days. Pashley26
Prawn has just made these for me. Standard mounts drilled out, hydraulic engine mount goo removed and necked with Polytek 85 shore pourable polyeurothane. I'll tell you what they are like this afternoon.
