Luke Rainbird
Yeah - my folks' van is currently around 240k or thereabouts and feels like new. 160k should be just about run in
Pashley26
I had a 1.9td Passat B3 which had done 330k. Was spot on.
Greetings
My E38 is nearing 300k now but it did require some major work a few years ago. Pretty amazing if a car can reach 330 and still be spot on without having to refurbish it.
CurtisRider
I had an Audi A4 1.9 TDI (90bhp) that did 180k and then died. It was a bit shit to be quite honest apart from the awesome fuel economy, the smoke bombs it made were pretty epic though.
Pashley26
My 1.9td had a bit of a wobbly crank pulley; but most of them do. Then eventually they fall off and kill everything. The downpipe flexi was split too. That said, I did 5000 miles in it over 4 months.

MadManMike
Everything about my Leon pisses me off. f**k cars. ANY mod I've had to do has been a pain in the f**king arse. The exhaust I bought was shit and we had so much trouble fitting it, it's unreal. Then I lower the car - buy the coilovers, nope f**k you Mike, you need to buy more shit to fit these otherwise you'll break other things. Now what's my beef today? Window mechs. I'll have the front left one please. No you won't, you'll have THREE choices. Why Seat? WHY? It would be nice if just once I could buy a replacement part and fit it - without needing any bullshit extra components.
RobinJI
T4's can rot really quite seriously, definitely have a damn good check! I've got amusing memories of welding the door hinges back onto one after the drivers door literally fell off when opened! They're a lot better than the Ford/Merc equivalents, but don't be complacent about it. They're pretty solid mechanically, the 2.5tdi's can have oil-pump issues (the casings rivets can work loose), so any low pressure warnings should be investigated ASAP. The 1.9's are a bit underpowered once loaded, so can wear out fairly fast if used with much weight in the back regularly. The 2.4d seems pretty much indestructable, and alright with weight in the back, but they are a bit on the slow side. My dad's got a 2002 2.5tdi (115bhp ish iirc) and it's been faultless other than the oil-pump issue and the exhaust rotting out. Damn comfy van on long runs too, especially with cruise control. bing
Would any of you car heads be interested in 2 passes for the Sunday of ford fair at silverstone, plus 2 camping passes at whittlebury park on the Saturday night? I'm after £60 for the pair, as that's what I paid. Can't go now due to some stuff going on in my life. It's the weekend of 10/11th August
RobinJI
Also, on the subject of VW vans, this was ammusing last time we went camping: (Admitedly caused by a mixture of recent accident damage and drunken hamfisted-ness, but it was bloody funny at 3am whilst very drunk!) Little Yoshi
Merc 220 CDi T-reg. Rear left wheel is squealing away. Took the brake caliper off and still doing it. So guessing its got something to do with the handbrake. Any ideas what i can do before getting my hands dirty again?
shamus
I work with a dude who's merc (vito) had a whine that ramped up to a squeal just before the collapsed wheel bearing ate through the hub and it essentially sheared off. That was insanely loud apparently and anyone else wouldn't have let it get that bad but he's a dick. Edited July 23, 2013 by shamus
CurtisRider
Mike, what exactly are you trying to fix on your windows? Is it the regulator?
MadManMike
Yeah, people tried to break into my car and managed to smash a lot of the internals up - not even sure how to be honest. The regulator is the part that needs replacing as it's totally knackered and the cables are all chewed up. I also ordered a new front lock as mine is knackered and they sent me a rear, so in general I'm just pissed off and needed somewhere to vent. I'm not a mechanically minded person like many on here, so even some simple tasks wind me up. Give me a PC to build or a huge club sound system to wire up and I'm fine, give me a car and I'll f**k up basic tasks.
King C
You are not stupid though, just somethings (especially with cars) don't always go right the first time. Stick at it and once it is fixed, you can bask in the glory that you did it yourself. You got to start somewhere and there are plenty of people on here who are willing to help you on your way.
Duncy H
Thanks for the pointers guys, the intention with the van is to carry myself and up to two other guys and their motorbikes around the country so it's never going to be loaded really heavy, (Bikes weigh about 70kg a piece) and also be used to ferry people and pushbikes around. This particular one I'm going to look at is a 1.9d. It looks pretty smart but to be honest atm I'm more going to have a nosey than anything unless it turns out to be a real good'un. Skoze
Mate of mine supercharged his 1949 Land Rover a while back (with an early 2l petrol a la all series one landies) Got it dyno'd today, 105bhp and 450lbft torque

CurtisRider
Mike the regulators can be a bitch, so I feel your pain. I will have another look in my shed for that locking mechanism, if I find it then it is yours for postage
CurtisRider
Changed my battery today (previous one was 8 years old) and noticed that my fuel filter has been pissing out petrol as the copper washer wasn't seated correctly. That partly explains my rather high fuel consumption... I also checked the cap and rotor arm whilst I was under the bonnet and they are nasty so replacements are on their way. One day maybe I can stop spending money on this car?

MadManMike
The door lock arrived today and they don't want the wrong one back, so I can sell that and earn some back. Regulator I've just ordered again, a different one - fingers crossed that fits. And finally, my insurance company owes me £30 for moving, so that's a winner. Greetings
It arrived. Finally. And they got the rear shocks wrong, because I wanted coilovers front and rear. Forced the dealer to replace them in a few weeks time FOC despite them going on the car straight away. Either way I'm pretty happy, it definitely feels like a 2 grand kit. Going to test their performance on Saturday. Edit: front and rear on the car. First impressions were negative since this set has absolutely no give in it whatsoever. It's as firm as concrete. However, after testing it on a very bumpy road I was amazed. The car was stuck to the ground both at 60 and 120mph and we're talking about a really bad road here. On an extremely bad bit I could feel the car getting more air than I'd expect so still need to play with the damping. Getting the rear damping right might be a bit challenging but it's so much better than the modified D2 kit I've been using. Whatever the setting, it's still an absolute winner and money brilliantly spent. I so hope this is all I need to beat that smug Megane RS driver. Not sure about that but I'll soon find out. Incidentally, the two next to each other Edited July 25, 2013 by Greetings
