The Car Thread

Whoa. Whats with the ghetto ARB fitting?

They're actually really strong and not under a lot of stress, most of the ARB's load is taken up by the mounting bolts on the shocks and there are bushings on the beam just to allow it to flex slightly and tucked up against the beam.

Lots of people fit RARB's like that :)

I take it that when attached properly and done up tight you have the 2 forward mounting points spread out as much as possible yeah Jardo? If so, those front mounting points are taking just as much load as the end at the shock, and if not, your ARB's doing sod all. Not saying the mountings are insufficient, (if I remember right they only come with big U bolts as standard don't they?) Just that they're not under any less stress than the rear mounts.

I lowered the car down onto the floor and did it all up compressed as it were, with it all tightened up the two mounts are spread out all the way to about an inch in from the bends.

And yeah they only came with some gay U bolts anyway, I had to change them when we fitted the exhaust because it was knocking against one of them.

The Neuspeed one I've recently bought is the only one I've seen that mounts in a way that doesn't look like it was developed on a farm! :P The bushes are properly encased in like a springy folded bit of steel which follows the contours of the rear beam exactly. It hooks onto one bit of the beam, and locks onto the top with a clamp bit; feels much more secure.

In Leon related news; my MAF seems to be dead (according to the ESP and engine management lights anyway). Its not driving any differently though, which is weird. Will fault scan it tomorrow and see whats up.

Had a quick read through earlier (slightly hurried due to a big old event we had to run this afternoon mind!). Good stuff dude.

I assume that one of the requirements of winning was that you're going to have to keep decent logs/frequent posts etc? Even if it's not, looking forward to more! :D

Quite obviously :P

Looks like a good solid setup, none of this posh caliper stuff!

Can't think of much that's more tedious than painting something which is already caked in 10 years of rust and will probably be seized again by the time the paint dries. :P

Twisty dogbone bush gave it away.

They make a mahoosive difference.

They really do, especially considering what came off.

You guys have both had 172s, thoughts on tyres? All four of mine are looking a little sorry.

Very cool. Really nice car. I keep seeing a tidy 3.0S driving the other way on my way home from work, always a neck-craning moment! With regards to the fibreglass side of things, it's a shame you're not closer or my work could potentially be a bit of a help. With regards to the engine, I saw this a couple of weeks ago:

Which resides in this:

And puts out 540bhp and over 600ft/lb of torque.

Hint-hint ;)

Uniroyal Rainsport 2's Hazabean.

Amazingly good tires for the price. Pretty much all you could want for a daily driver.

I drove back to Basingstoke last night, did the journey in two hours. :)

A3 is going really well which is nice, took Prawn out in it and he seemed to grab lots of things to hold on to and seemed to like it.

Yeah. Things are good :)

What's the car used for, just a daily driver?

If so, the Uniroyals do come with good reviews (although never used them myself). I think pretty much anything with decent reviews, as long as they are all the same tyre, will do a good job :)
